Hi friends and family! As you know, I will be traveling to Ecuador September 1-12 with a group from the University of Cincinnati College of Nursing. I'm really excited and hope that I am able to share my experiences through this blog. I'm not great at this sort of thing so we'll see how it goes!

Today, we traveled back to Quito to the airport. Glad to be going home but it’s bittersweet because this trip has been so amazing. We stopped at one of the hospitals that we referred patients to for a tour. You can look at the pictures. We had one last meal before we went to the airport and it was the best meal of the trip! I met some really amazing people and got to do some really amazing things. I have never felt like I was making such an amazing difference in the lives of so many people and it is comforting to know that we will continue to make a difference through the health promoters we trained. I am so grateful for the opportunity to have this experience and cannot wait to do something like ... read more

Today was an adventure. We got to take a canoe trip after all! We took a canoe.. yes 16 people in one canoe.. to a community on an island that looked much like San Rafael. We did much of the same things we did on day 7: fluoride, albendazole, toothbrushes, toothpaste etc. That evening when we returned, we went to the community that hosted us for the health promoter training the previous two days and they served us dinner. We had chicken cooked in a banana leaf which was delicious and vegetables with rice. Then, we had to eat slugs. I can barely touch a slug so I cannot even believe I did it. It tasted like bacon but was NOT the same texture. BLEH! Glad I did it though! The governor of the Province of ... read more

Our original plan for today was to take a canoe trip to the zoo before an afternoon and evening of training with the health promoters. However, even though we are in the rainforest, it has not rained since we’ve been here. In fact, it hasn’t rained in a week and the locals are getting worried because the river is so low. Instead of canoeing, we went spelunking. It was awesome. I’ve been to Mammoth Cave before.. that is nothing. We were completely underwater at point during this adventure. It was crazy. At one point, our guide rubbed mud all over our faces because it was said to help with wrinkles and zits. While we were down one of the tributaries, we all turned out headlamps off while our guide told us stories. It was so dark ... read more

Today, we began a two day training for the health promoters similar to the one we did in Quito. Because Tena is so much more rural that Quito, it is imperative that the health promoters have a more solid education, especially about when it is important to get someone medical attention and how to keep them healthy until that can happen. For today, we focused on first aid. We talked about breaks, sprains, and strains, bug bites, snake bites, choking, heat exhaustion, heat stroke, dehydration, wound care, etc. They really wanted to know how to place stitches properly, likely because in reality, they will be doing this, not a doctor. The health promoters were so enthusiastic and they got to practice a lot of the skills we taught. This is also where we handed out the ... read more

Today is our first day of clinic in Tena. Tena is much much much more rural than Quito. This trip is cool because we get to see an urban setting and a rural one. Every day in Tena we will have breakfast at 7am and dinner at 7pm. Needless to say, by 7pm I am ready for bed. We pack so much into one day but I like it that way. Three of the ten students are sick.. hoping I make it at least until we get home! Today was really great. We took two pick-up trucks out into the middle of the jungle.. okay we were already in the middle of the jungle.. so further into the jungle on gravel roads for about an hour. It was like off-roading; pretty fun actually. We got to ... read more

We spent all of today traveling. It was really cool to watch the terrain change from mountains to jungle. Awesome. I think that’s my word of the trip.. awesome.. it describes everything so well. I am rooming with one girl in Tena, Lynette. We can see the Misahualli river from our window. It’s a tributary of the Amazon. We had soup at our new hostel with dinner. It seems weird to be eating soup because it is SO HOT here. It’s amazing how we went from cold Quito to hot and humid Tena in a 6 hour bus ride.... read more

I started typing this post and was almsot finished with it when I looked up and it was GONE! It was deleted and I couldn't recover it :( I was pretty proud of it too. I'm going to try to recreate it but I know it won't be the same! We started today with clinic again. We saw about 40 patients. After lunch we got ready to begin a four hour training with the health promoters. The health promoters are people in the community that have taken an interest in the health of those around them and want to do something to improve the general health of the population. They do not require any specific training and just learn what they can. They end up performing roles of doctors, nurses, midwives, dentists, therapists, case workers, and ... read more

Something else I've noticed about the food in Ecuador is that we are served fresh-squeezed juice with EVERY meal! It's really good and a lot of it is made with fruit I've never even heard of before. After breakfast, we headed out to our second day of clinic. We did the same physical exams that we did yesterday and found many of the same problems including hypertension, high glucose levels, and dehydration. Many of the patients also complained of arthritic pain and back pain. Unfortunately, we did not recommend medications for them (which is likely what would happen here and it does help) because, again, medications are not always available so we wanted to leave them with something that they could count on. With all the mountains and having to walk a ways to get water ... read more

Today we visited a Tierra Nueva school for children with special needs. We got to interact with the kids and learn a little bit about how their foundation works. It is in Ecuador's constitution to provide adequate education for all children regardless of mental capacity and/or physical disabilities. However, many of the schools ignore this law and almost no one enforces it. This leaves the children who have special needs without a place to go to school. That's where the Tierra Nueva Foundation comes in. It is a private institution that costs $40-50 a month per child to attend. This is certainly a low price by US standards but not in Ecuador. Regardless, there are 30-40 children on the waiting list at all times but Tierra Nueva has little resources and the teachers and therapists there ... read more

September 2nd 2012

Day two! We didn't going to clinic today.. this is actually the only day we won't. We spent the day getting to know Ecuador and recovering from a long day of traveling. For breakfast at the hostel, our host made us fresh juice and yogurt with granola and fruit. The only reason I mention that is because there are so many bizarre fruits here. Learning more than jsut about nursing things! After breakfast, we were reintroduced to Don Fausto, our bus driver, and set out to visit the equator. There was an amazing view for the entire bus ride. The mountains make for a really great landscape. It was really breathtaking. The other weird thing about being in the mountians is every time you get off the bus, it's a different temperature. You really never know ... read more
