Floating Through Life.. One Adventure at a Time

South America » Ecuador » Galápagos » Santa Cruz Island September 6th 2012

We departed Colonial House at 6 AM for the airport in order to catch our flight to Isla Baltra where the main airport for the Galapagos is located. After a bit of confusion regarding how to purchase transit tickets and where the security line started, we made it to the gate with plenty of time to spare before our flight departed at 7:40. After a short comfortable flight connecting through Guayaquil to Isla Baltra, we met up with the guide and the rest of the passengers on the yacht. From there we took a bus to a small pier, hopped on a Zodiac, and boarded the Floreana. Our first stop on the Floreana was the Island of North Seymour, which it is tiny island just North of Isla Baltra/Santa Cruz. On the way to the island, ... read more

Our third day in Quito started off with breakfast at the hostel followed by a late morning visit to the Teleferico, a gondola that terminates 4000 meters above sea level at the base of largest peak in the immediate Quito area. Right when we exited the gondola, both of us noticed the difference in oxygen compared to Quito. After walking for a little over a kilometer in hopes of reaching the 4800 meter summit, we realized that we were not ready for an all day mountain excursion and headed back down. Even from the lower viewpoint, the view was spectacular and highlighted the vastness of Quito. We took a cab from the telefirico directly to Bella Vista, one of the more wealthy districts of Quito. Many of the homes in the area were quite large and ... read more

South America » Ecuador » North » Otavalo September 4th 2012

We woke up bright and early for our trip to Otavalo, which is a town with a market place run by the indigenous people of Ecuador, located a couple hours out of Quito. Saturday is supposed to be the best day to visit the market but we decided today would have to do. We went with a group from our hostel, which consisted of three Canadians, a Belgian, and a local tour guide. The traffic is just insane in Quito. It took us an hour or so to get out of the outskirts of Quito. Once we left the city, we were immersed with the gorgeous scenery and the Andes mountains. As we passed by miles of construction, our tour guide told us the new Quito airport was being built in the middle of the huge ravine ... read more

We arrived safe and sound last night in Quito at around 7:30pm. We slept a few hours on the plane so we weren't too exhausted upon arrival. We made it through customs in less than 30 minutes and found a cab easily outside the bustling airport. It was already dark outside in Quito and it was pretty scary driving through the city at night. Apparently, Sunday is the most dangerous day of the week in Quito because everyone stays at home on their day off. This is when all the "dangerous" activity occurs. All the shops were closed and the buildings were covered with graffiti. We arrive at our hostel, Colonial House, which was completely hidden from the street except for a bright blue door. To get inside, we had to ring a door bell and ... read more

After much anticipation... the trip to South America is finally happening! My dad will be headed down to South America for one to two years starting in Colombia, and I will be the first of his children to visit him. I spent the last month helping my dad pack up the house and wrapping up some things of my own... and now I am ready to go (minus the spanish lessons that were supposed to be happening weekly). I am heading to Ecuador and Colombia TOMORROW with my boyfriend and best friend, Sean. I can't think of anyone else in the world I would rather travel with. . He is fun, relaxed, hilarious, patient, adventurous.. the list could go on forever but he really is the BEST travel buddy. We have already been on a few ... read more
