A & D

Here we go again! This time Peru and Ecuador.
We are going to try ourselves beyond the tropical paradise of SE Asia! This time we have packed for 10,000 feet Andes, snow-packed volcanoes, as well as for the Amazon. It was very hard to pack light!
We are going to trek in the Andes, hopefully making to the top of Machu Picchu; taking a boat down the Rio Madre De Dios in the Amazon; soaking in the Ecuadorian landscapes; all the wile eating new and exciting foods! ...ah, and drinking their beer!

hey all, so before i get into what is probably our last blog, this one about being in the amazon jungle, a couple of bus details that i left out last time - which we think are kinda funny (though only after the fact!). on some busses, a fellow will come by and film each person onboard incase there is an accident and they need to match the face to whatever is left. yikes! in our last blog, i mentioned that the busses stop OFTEN. well on our trip to quilatoa, we had many chickens tied to the roof and each time an indigenous person would barrel down the aisle to get off (typically hitting everyone along the way in the head), they would then have their chickens taken down. the bus would start again, and ... read more

since our last post... left cuenca for the long bus ride to riabamba. as dorota was still feeling under the weather, we did not ride the rooftop train down the "devil´s nose". we did however have the worst pizza we could find :) riabamba seemed to be completely under construction and covered in dust, so we high-tailed it out of there, taking another bus ride to banos. a few words about bus rides: long, loud chaotic music, dirty diapers, sick passengers, many indigenous people, with their awesome outfits, consisting of shawls, long skirts, high heels and fedora´s. strange, but wicked. so...banos... great little town, surrounded by mountains. a bit overfull of tourist-related tour companies and bike rentals, but nice nonetheless. we rented some mountain bikes and rode down the mountain, stopping at the many waterfalls, riding ... read more

the traveling part of traveling sometimes makes for more entertaining stories than enjoyable experiences... so, to catch up... firstly, i last miss-posted about the amazon. that´s still a few days ahead. our last night in cusco was spent with our trekking buddies, jeremy, neil and finlay. we went out for curry and beers and had a merry old time. this was after around 4 hours of trying to book flights out of cusco and onto piura on the northern coast. the next morning, we took a taxi to the airport, hopped a prop plane (!) to lima, and then eventually a plane to piura. the idea of piura was to spend a day or two relaxing at the nearby beachs, eat some ceviche and plan on getting over the border to ecquador. we ended up spending ... read more

dear friends and family, last night we returned from our andes adventure. i should mention that i´m on very little sleep and left my travel book in the room, so spelling of cities and such will be suspect, also cuzco, as i was spelling it previously, will be now spelled as cusco. it seems to switch back and forth -- like my brother, teehee. we took a train from aguas caliente to ollytambambo and then a taxi to cusco, dropped our bags and head out (late!) to see the virgenes de cameron festival and hook up with two of our team members/friends from the trek, neal and finlay from scottland, for proper beers and cider. so let´s back up. this will be hard to describe and may take a few posts. maybe even a little bit ... read more

boats, catamarans, minivans, tuk tuks, canoes, motorbikes, escalators, lifts, buses, and more of all the above. the last of our tales: after one more day, hiking and beaching in phi phi don (climbed a high and incredible hike to a viewpoint, where you can see both sides of the island), we took mid-sized boat to railey, which is a remote beach area on the south-western tip of thailand, only reachable by boat. railey is just as spectacular as phi phi, only with far less people, and far less development. there's the east side and the west side, separated by about a 3-5 minute walk. the best beaches on either side, are framed by giant limestone cliffs. of course there's the obligatory white sands and warm tourquoise water. we caught the first of the (as the book ... read more

left krabi yesterday. spent breakfast speaking with toosie, our new friend from the hotel. we really enjoyed meeting him! took a boat to koh phi phi. super fun, passing lots of islands along the way. koh phi phi.... i do not have the words. so spectacular, it is difficult to describe. huge, towering limestone cliffs, clear, tourquoise water, boats, in lush fauna, in every direction. this is what one thinks of when one considers paradise! we ate our first meal here, massman curry, which may be the best meal we have had in thailand. then we went to book a day tour for the following day (today), the tour coordinator said that a boat was leaving in 15 minutes, so we decided to go right then and there (yesterday). us and around 40 other people took ... read more

So, finally I was able to find a couple of hours to download some pictures....even though they advertise ADSL (whatever that means).....it does take longer here.... I know there will be a lot of photos coming your way....and I don't have another 2 hours to write the descriptions, so maybe next time..... love to all! dorota PS. mom- we are not doing super dangerous stuff, so don't worry! Taxi mafia in Cambodia is THE norm :) We are on our last streach of our journey. Tomorrow we are off to Phi Phi Island (one of the most magnificent of them all! Well, there are thousands of Islands in Thailand, so maybe there are others MORE spectacular?) Then we are off for another few days to a place called Railey (another breathtaking place) Google Earth it, there ... read more
