so... we spent one last night in our little hut, got up said goodbye to the gulf of thailand, caught a catamaran back to chompon, and then a 5 hour minivan ride to krabi (in the south/west coast - andaman sea). minivan: this was a super-duper minivan. it had a dvd player! dorota said that it takes away from the minivan experience. adam said, "yes, it takes away some of the crappiness!". we watched the latest james bond movie. the only reason we mention this is that it had "english" subtitles. whoever transcribed this movie must have been from a remote village! they made no sense whatsoever, which was very entertaining. a few samples: a jamaican man says "hey mon", the subtitle says, "hello mommy". james asks his latest conquest if she is "feeling bad", and ... read more

hello all, rented a motorbike on beautiful ko tao yesterday. rode as far as we could in both directions. the island is becoming so overdeveloped that the new "resorts" have planted themselves in front of the old ones, right on the beach, so the beaches, while quite stunning, are very narrow. there's also limited beach because the more expensive resorts block off the "their" beaches for "guests only". in every island/beach town we've visited on past trips, this seems to be the case. still an incredible place however, with spectacular views! we snorkeled in two spots and got to see a myriad of colorful fish, including little black ones that were nipping at dorota's feet! it turns out that the current trend for pedicure is to pay $50 (in japan and the states) so that you ... read more

hey people, so we haven't been proof-reading these, but we just glanced at the last one, and YIKES.... haven't written that poorly since the 1st grade! sorry (this may not be much better)! anyway, back to the adventure... we last left you in hua hin, the king's residence. we spent our first day catching up on laundry, writing to you good folks, and walking along the beach.that night we had dinner at the local market (shrimps off of a grill), and watched people crowd around a video of michael jackson live in bucarest. a word on michael jackson: laugh all ya want people, but we're still sad! everywhere we go, michael songs and videos are playing though. we actually walked by someone's home/shop where a vid was playing and when we peaked at the screen, the ... read more

Asia July 19th 2009

hello all, sorry for the delayed update. we've been in more remote, rural places, as well as cambodia, where internet is not high speed, and NOT air-conditionad. so let's see.... chiang mai: we'd spent one last night on the town with our yankee friends, sam and austin, and ended up eating food they'd prepared in a cooking class. food was tasty, but dorota did get sick (though we really don't suspect the food - haha) chiang rai: we took a bus to chiang rai. made it to the bus station within two minutes of departure, and accidentally bought 1st class, aircon tickets (and we'd do it again!!). got a room in a quiet place just on the outskirts of "town" (at least until the roosters got going at 5am!) we were both a bit ill for ... read more

ok...this one deserves it's own blog. last night, we were walking around, outside of the city moat. it started to rain, so we ducked into a rasta-themed bar for a chang beer. we began talking with a couple from the states. D.C to be exact. Austin (the wife) is going into intellectual property law (strange as this was adam's field of sleuthing). sam (the husband) is a guitar player. they have been to a number of places that we have, and got engaged in puerto villejo, costa rica at cashew hill, where we stayed five years ago. small, strange world! anyway, sam suggested that we attend a thai boxing match. thai boxing is THE national sport. we ambled over to the venue, and 400 baht per person later (around $12), we were taking part in the ... read more

so let's see.... our second day in bangkok: we started to walk down koh san road (a famous backpacker haunt), and got sidetracked by a tuk tuk driver. he made small talk and when dorota mentioned she needed an international sim card, offered to take us to the center city mall extavaganza for 10 baht each. we thought (i knew!) this was a bit to generous, but we bit and went with the flow. the driver took us to a travel info office. we entered and asked some questions. then he took us to a tailor and said to just "look around". he then explained that he gets free gasoline cards for these stops. we went in and got into a pretty interesting conversation with the two tailors about world politics and america, so it was ... read more

hey peoples, not much to report just yet. we had a LONG flight to taiwan, and decided to use our 8 hour layover wisely. we stored our backpacks and jumped a bus to taipai to see a temple, and did a mornig offering. we walked through the local neighborhood, had some noodles (adam didn't know what the broth was made of, but it sure was good!). cyndi, we saw your people in taiwan! lovely folks! we were the only whities, which made us feel like we were cool adventurers - haha! took a bus back to the airport, and then the wackiness began. we thought we went to the wrong airport, which was supported by the confounded bus driver. we then realized we were in the correct airport, but could not get through customs to reclaim ... read more
