Laguna Quilotoa Well, we´re finally travelling after Quito. It was quite sad saying goodbye to Quito after being there for so long. It´s a busy, diverse city with lots of polluting buses but we really loved it. From the more touristy La Mariscal area to the Colonial Old Town to the modern New Town with all the shinier buildings... and all the lovely volcanoes surrounding it. First journey was to Latacunga and from there to Laguna Quilotoa. It´s about 3 hours from Quito. We were going to stay in Zumbuhua (14km away from the lake) but as soon as we arrived we were being hassled in that wonderful south american way... where they will tell you anything to use their taxi service. Tungurahua, non c'est pas une sorte de bébitte, c'est un VOLCAN ! Les dernieres 36 heures ont été dignes d'un film ! Dès notre arrivée à Banos, on doutait déjà de notre securité puisque le volcan grondait et crachait de la boucane. Les gens avaient tous l'air de trouver ça normal et nous avons demandé à plusieurs touristes qui avaient aussi l'air de dire que tout était sous contrôle. Nous avons essayé de trouver de l'information partout, mais rien n'indiquait une éventuelle explosion ! Malgré nos inquiétudes, on s'est dit qu'on s'énervait pour rien et on a décidé de faire un petit tour guidé la nuit pour aller voir le peu du volcan. Finally left Banos today after waking up in the night with the whole room shaking and doors banging. All morning the volcano was rumbling ominously so after cancelling our parasailing we got on a bus to riobamba. 2 hours later upon arriving here we look back and can see an enormous plume of volcanic ash hanging in the sky so it looks like we made a lucky escape. I dunno we leave london and the next day the whole plane system goes up the spout and now we leave banos and the volcano blows. Beware the good people of Riobamba (where we are now) we leave in 2 days. Next up is a ride on the top of a train into the andes...... read more

Le cotopaxi à 4800m d'altitude... Aujourd'hui fût une journée assez extraordinaire. C'est avec deux suisses et un guide équatorien que nous avons faite une excursion au Cotopaxi, le plus grand volcan actif. Son sommet est à 5897m. Heureusement, nous n'avons pas monté le tout à pied !!!!! L'excursion a commencé en jeep pour monter à environ 4500m d'altitude. Dans les routes sinueuses pour monter, je faisais souvent la balle de ping pong entre les deux suisses à l'arrière. Ca ferait un beau manège à la ronde ! Arrivée à 4500m, nous descendons du jeep pour monter les 300 mètres à pied et atteindre le refuge à 4800m d'altitude. J'peux vous dire que c'est pas facile. A même pas 50 mètres plus loin, je suffoquais déjà. Le manque d'oxygène était belle et bien là. Il me restait ... read more

Hello from Ecaudor! It´s been over a week since we got married now and everything seems to have rushed by. After arriving in Quito the capital city, we have gone straight to a town called Banos, nestled in a valley between soaring hills and a massive volcano. We have just found out that the Foriegn Office website states that Banos is the only place in Ecuador that tourists should avoid! The volcano erupts about 20 times a day sending huge bangs down the valley and firing huge plumes of ash into the sky. Our hotel is out of town half way up the volcano so we get a great view of it all. We are assured that the prevaling winds are blowing in the other direction, so that the clouds of poisionous gases will miss us. ... read more
