Well a quick update for all you people back at home. Thursday the 1st was a total washout in Baños - felt like I was back in England with the amount of rain there was - it literally rained all day apart from a 2 hour window of cloudiness. So I decided to have a lazy day - did a bit of my teaching english course and then spent a couple of hours at the hot baths which are outdoors so it was quite cool being submerged in 32oC water when it was raining!! Was not totally peaceful as my visit coincided with a 40 children strong school trip!! However, there was one advantage of the rain on Thursday and that was for whitewater rafting on Friday - yeay!! As it had rained so much the ... read more

After a few too many Mojito cocktails the night before we all got up and Andrea and me went for a steam bath in the hostel. Basically, you sit in a wooden box and turn up the steam until you can take no more! Several of these sessions interspersed with being towelled and hosed down with cold water is supposed to help your skin and detox you - don´t know if it did that but it was damn nice anyway and the guy jet washed some on my bruises which I am covered in at the moment and they are disappearing now! We then had breakfast and were chatting to Jen and Kevin an Irish couple we had met the night before. We decided to attempt the Baños to Puyo bike ride - 60km of supposedly ... read more

Hey guys and gals Finally I have chance to write a bit about what I´ve been up to since I left good old Blighty. After 15 hours or so of flying I landed in Quito and promptly went off to the Secret Garden - my first hostel. Was really nice there met loads of nice people and the next day headed off with a girl I met called Hannah to Las Palmas - 3 hours from Quito on the bus. Before this I committed a mare and decided it would be a good idea to leave my card in the cash machine!! I know doom! Combination of rushing for a bus and 15 hours of flying the day before so I had to leg it back to the bank see if my card was there (luckily ... read more

More photos for your delectation! Horseriding was great - Hannah hadn´t done it since she was 13 so we were hoping to take it easy but in true Ecuadorian gaucho style we set off at a full pelt gallop with me feeling slightly guilty and hoping she would be ok. Wasn´t like that the whole way - just most of it! We were probably the nuisance of all the villages we galloped through - Ecuadorian equivalent of Boy Racers on Southend sea front. The guide Wilson was on a very fast horse and I kept trying to race him - unfortunately Rocillo just couldn´t cut the mustard! The horses were really well looked after and we got back to some food and also chatting to Marcello (4 years old who I put a photo up of) ... read more

Volcanoes, volcanoes and more volcanoes.. as its on the equator, Ecuador has many of these natural wonders a few of which are active and one is on an alert warning- its errupting! We left Cuenca and headed to Riobamba to see and climb (to the 2nd refugio) the highest one (and the 2nd highest peak in SA), Chimborazo (6310m). It was huge and just like a volcano from my imagination. We climbed upto the second refugio and it was an easy gradiant, but diffucult because of the altitude again! It was completely bare of any life up there.. but was amazing! That night we went off into the mountains to see Tungurahua errupt closely. It has been errupting for 2 weeks and we saw the black smoke of the erruption in the day but wanted to ... read more

Another week. Another blog. I’m sure you must be bored reading all this by now… ;-) Last week’s instalment was a bit of an epic, and this week’s threatens to be just as longwinded. So, to help the easily confused (including myself), I’ll give a quick summary of the last seven days instead: Saturday and Sunday - Took a bus (or three) through the central highlands to a little market town called Guaranda high in the mountains with two of the new volunteers. The roads to and from this town are famous in Ecuador for their beauty, and have amazing views of the extinct Volcano Chimborazo. The town itself is quiet and friendly, with beautiful views of the surrounding countryside from a viewpoint on the edge of town. The road to Guaranda rises to over 4000 ... read more

Hola Chicos y Chicas! Another week has passed, and what a diverse week it has been. Last weekend I was in Quito, and met up with my Swiss friend Maggie, and we had a catch up. She had just come back from her second attempt to scale Cotopaxi, the world’s highest active volcano (5,897m/ 19,347ft), and she was quite despondent about failing for a second time. She needed more time to climb the final section of the ascent to the summit, and had to turn back with her guide at 5,400 meters. She is now determined to go back to Switzerland, get some serious climbing practice in, and return to conquer Cotopaxi! Incidentally, she managed to climb higher than any peak in the Swiss Alps, an achievement that didn’t make her feel any better. I would ... read more

Dear all... May we continue the story...when we last spoke I was clinging to the roof of a train... Surviving the Devils Nose... Fear not! I survived to tell the tale! In fact it was not the James Bond style escapade I was imagining. We queued as instructed at 6am; it was a cold and drizzly Andean morning and only the brave boarded the roof. They rented seat pads for 1$ a piece; much needed but not enough! Neither were the 4 layers of clothing, gloves, woolly hat and scarf I was wearing. We scoffed at the rich folk in their $140 heated coach as they scoffed back and took photos of the gringo idiots on the roof in the rain. The weather had finally eased up as we got to the 'nose' and a series ... read more

Riobamba is an Andean city in the middle of Ecuador. Being 4000m above sea level the climate is a lot cooler and wetter than that of Quito, making the 5 hour journey there quite pleasent. The rolling Andean mountains were covered in every shade of green imaginable and the higher ones white tipped. We passed a disproportionately large number of militaty and police schools on our journey too. We arrived at our hostel mid afternoon, a bit of a dumpy place but no doubt beautiful in its colonial hey day, high ceilings, central enclosed courtyard and much wood. The reason for our visit to Riobamba was a train journey, a very scarey one where you ride on the roof of the train while it ascends and decends the edge of the Andes. The idea was to ... read more

Well, we have once again reached Quito, for the fourth and final time, flying back to Lima tomorrow afternoon. The Quilotoa Circuit was safely negotiated, with a lovely two night stay at the Black Sheep Inn in Chugchilán. Now, back to our story. Taking it slowly, we waited until morning to pack and ate breakfast at our hostel. Though we were told to catch an early bus, our desire to do so was tempered by our desire to sleep. The compromise was an 9am bus arriving in Latacunga at 11am for a 12pm bus to Chugchilán. Once again, it seems no one in Ecuador cares to get to the terminal, as there were only 3 others that bother to show up. Instead, we got a whirlwind, 45 minute tour of Quito, driving the street while the ... read more
