Whew! We have been suitably chastised by a number of you for not writing often enough...and the year has just begun. What a week. The first Friday of work was a blast...apparently the town we are working in has a week-long fiesta celebrating the independence of the area - "The Fiesta De Colta". This fiesta just ended on August 2nd after 10-14 days of havoc. That friday (the 20th) we finished work with the field crew and decided to share some beers with everyone....well, 30 beers later we exited the site feeling refreshed, and managed to literally walk into a very colourful parade down the Pan-American highway and through the centre of town. Our Ecuadorian friends decided a parade just wasn´t a parade without a couple boxes of fruity wine and the liquor of choice down ... read more

It’s 5 am and still dark. As usual I have managed to procrastinate sufficiently on writing this blog that it’s the day before we leave Quito and its got to be now or never. Never mind, as work colleagues will attest, dawn has always been a good time for me to be creative and /or productive dahlings, ever since getting up at this time to write overdue English essays on what I did over the summer or copy pictures from the Encyclopaedia Britannica for geography projects due at 9am that day. So here goes… Leaving Vilcabamba was tough and we had several crap days afterward struggling with travelling, buses, crummy hotels, bad weather and not enough people to talk to. But we withstood the storm (literally) and got to Baños - a quaint little town who’s ... read more

Hola Amigos! We arrived at Quito around 11 pm on the 15th, and were promptly met by our archaeologist friends - this was a good thing because as you step out of the airport EVERYONE´s whole family is there to greet them...this creates a bizarre scene of crowds yelling and cheering on both sides. We didn´t do much that night, but the next day (Saturday) we walked around the "new town" aka the "gringo district" and saw the local market. Quito is a very beautiful city which is surrounded by mountains and low rolling hills. In fact, it seemed at first that the airport appropriated the only flat strip of land in the whole region! There is so much history in the architecture, yet within the new town there are many eclectic modern bars and restaurants ... read more

Ecuadors hoegsta topp!!! Den snoeklaedda vulkanen, 6310meter,Chimborazo. daer var vi igaar!! Vilken kick! vi tog bussen tidigt fraan Quito, aakte soederut i 4 timmar till staden Riobamba. Kaend ocksaa som ¨Sultan of the Andes¨.

Well we made it to Ecuador. We left Chiclayo on the 6th at 10pm on an overnight bus to Tumbes near the border with Ecuador. We arrived in far northern Perú at 5:30 am (before dawn). As soon as we left the bus agency, they closed the doors. We were the only gringos on board and the other passengers quickly dispersed. This meant that we were besieged by a dozen taxis, moto-taxis, and minibuses all offering to take us towards the border. No me gusta. We tried to fend them off, but they were very persistent. We knew we had to just get out of there, so we chose one and got across the border an hour or two later. From Huayquillas, the Ecuadorian border town, we took a bus to Machala, the next city inland. ... read more

Got back from the Galapagos and had a dinner with everyone from the boat. We all ended up in the same hotel which was great! After a week of sharing a cabin where only one person could be in the cabin at one time (unless the other was in bed!). I soon had all my belongs sprawled out all over the place and a huge pile to send to the wash. Had to continue to take motion sickness tablets as was now feeling land sick - no swaying was causing a problem! I was not the only one and we decided that the only thing to do was to go out and have a couple of cocktails with dinner. Strong cocktails, being up at 6 am and altitude effects had us all yawning and in bed ... read more

This is Jen calling! helloooo! yes, Baños is Spanish for Baths you know, and unlike Bath in Blighty, the water is heated by a very very active volcano. as if! We didnt have time or the stomach to head up to the crater to see the lava, but we prob will next time, when we can actually read the danger reports which are in Spanish. Sorry for no pics btw, this cafe doesnt have the bits we need. The craziest thing was the permanent smoke rising from the mountains around the volcano, it seemed like smoke but we hope it was just evaporation! And who would have thunk it; chilling on a volcano one day, then hop on a bus and head six hours downhill, past waterfalls at least 100 METRES high and in the words ... read more

Yesterday we survived the Devil´s nose train ride from Rio Bamba to Alaussi, it was awesome. Most of the way we were watched by the local children because everybody buys lollipops to throw to them. We spent a small fortune on lollies, as you throw them the children come from everywhere to collect them. The train climbs up through the mountains on the narrowest tracks I have ever seen and crosses some bridges which I would think twice about walking over. When we got to the devils nose the drop to the side of the train must have been about 300 feet straight down. We did have one minor mishap, there was a landslide and a rock landed on Bev ( don´t worry it was only about the size of an egg and made of pumice ... read more

Thursday 19th May 2005 : Goodbye Latacunga, Hello Banos Got up and left the Residencial Rieles without looking back. Had hoped to get breakfast nearby but all the places open seemed to double as greasy chicken joints and I walked past them all. Entering the bus terminal we were waved straight on to a bus for Banos, I thought. Once underway it became clear it was only going as far as Ambato where we could catch the Banos bus. Getting off the bus in Ambato the conductor showed us exactly where (just across the road) to pick up the Banos bus. As we reached the departure point there was a heated debate (by the conductors) about which was the best/next bus available. We were shepherded to a bus and sure enough it set off after a ... read more
