Geo: 4.60987, -74.082San Gil also...

We are finally happy. Very happy : ) The first few days after our Lost City hike have been our lowest point yet. The ugliest, most resistant tummy bug found its way inside of our tummies and wreaked havoc for over 2 weeks. 4 courses of medication did not help, and eventually, suspecting something more serious like cholera or dysentry, we headed to the clinic in San Gil (after a charming 18 hour bus ride complete with cramps, nausea and no toilet paper in the toilet). We finally got some decent medication that seems to be doing the job. So after days of eating almost nothing, we are almost brave enough to eat street food again! Our time in Cartagena was mediocre. It was the first port of entrance for the Spanish. Most of our time ... read more

We were jostling with the crowds, standing on the tips of our toes, our necks craned, Lewi holding a flimsy cardboard sign above his head reading ‘Joshy Balboa’. It was 10pm on a grey Bogota evening and the atmosphere outside the arrivals gate was louder feistier and crazier than a gaggle of teenagers waiting for a TakeThat concert. An hour passed, and as the hyper arrivals hoards around us began to thin there was still no sign of Josh. But then all of a sudden there was another surge of passengers to the doors….including one very familiar face beaming back at us! We joined in the melee of shouting, hugging, laughing and crying, blending in perfectly with the joyous families surrounding us. Bogota itself didn’t have much to enchant the traveller with, it was simply a ... read more

Buenos noches from San Gil, Central Colombia. We've been residing in the fab Hostel Santander Aleman for a few days now and feel like we've notched up enough material for blog entry numero uno (ignoring Olie's previous rambles). So, here goes... 20/07/11 - After a suprise stay at the newly renovated St Pancras International Hotel, we took the tube to Heathrow and boarded flight BA115. Finally on our way! 6.5 hours later we landed at JFK, New York and were greeted by the US security procedures...8 finger prints, 2 thumb prints, 1 mug shot and a sniffer dog check later we were free to go. The Gershwin Hotel, Manhatten was an excellent choice for a NY budget hotel...great location close to Madison Square Park and quirky, spatious rooms. Dumped backpacks and ate a Vietnamese takeaway on ... read more

Laughing, they were all purely, bodily, facially and heartily laughing, not at me, but with me, genuinely. We were playing Bolo – a local form of Patanque where relatively heavy steel balls are launched underarm skywards to drop on or around three battered wooden stumps. The aim is to knock them over directly, or with the aid of a bounce on the ground or a bash against the back-board. I had just stepped up with my first shot and pulled it so far left it sailed up, up, up and over the pitch side fence to land in a heavy bush the other side. All the local lads laughed and slapped my back, but it wasn’t mocking laughter – the men of San Gil were delighted my brother, his girlfriend and I had stopped to take ... read more

De lokale her, i San Gil, kaller vikinger for hooligans. England? Football? Men sà viste de hornene. Vikinger. Jakob.

Caroline and I decided to leave Taganga today, it just wasn't doing anything for us, so it was time to move on. After hanging out for most of the day in the town that I must admit was growing on me; eating a deliciuos salad and skyping everyone in the family including my adorable little nephew Angus it was time to get moving. After a cocktail at Pacha mama it was time to say farewell. We caught a taxi for more than Caroline was willing to pay and left on the overnight bus to San Gil at 6pm. The bus was super comfortable but the airconditioning was absolutely freezing, as those of you who've experienced latin american buses will know. The movie is nearly always an action movie and its not just playing in the background, ... read more
