If I am honest, I was happy to be leaving Bogota. The weather was overcast and grey, the city was huge and I didn’t feel safe in La Candeleria. Three days in the capital was plenty. My next stop was San Gil, which is supposed to be the adventure capital of Colombia. Before I talk about what happened in San Gil, I missed out my previous stalking moment from my Venezuelan part of my blog. So here is the story. The day before I was due to fly to Angel Fall, I was staying in Cuidad Bolivar. I needed to grab some drink, so I went to a shop around the corner from the hostel. In the shop there was an older man and a youngish man, the youngest guy served me. I asked the older ... read more

San Gil Columbia was one of the most scenic and traditional towns we´ve been to. This area is widely known for the outdoor activities including white water rafting, cave swimming tours, hiking and $10 bungee jumping!! Haha!! After our 5+ hr bus trip from Bogota we were wonderfully welcomed by Shaun at Macondo Hostel. No wonder Lonely Planet tells travelers to see him!! The hostel was comfortable with incredibly friendly staff and with the perfect cat mascot!! The cat took care of all bugs who dared to venture into the courtyard. Also worth mentioning is the Awesome breakfast we had across the street at Santander Aleman Hostel!! A major highlight for us was Pozo Azul, a free swimming hole with wonderful waterfalls. We were there on a Sunday where so many locals were hanging out with ... read more

Sitting in the front seat of minibus ,chatting to the driver about his life ,while travelling through the green hills of Central Colombia.Colombian music playing softly while a mother and toddler giggle happily amongst the other passengers in the back.My life is like a dream.I must have been a saint in my last life. Well since last entry I've done a few miles.I got my Ecuadorian Tat done and went to a tourist shop. This was Monday and they told me that the next tour that included walking to the refuge on Cotopaxi wasn't until Saturday.I have wanted to do this walk since seeing a kids reality show ,on ABC, about a group of kids ,from UK, who were chosen to go to Cotopaxi and build an enclosure for caged bears who were about to be released ... read more

Day 709 (08.03.09) With some of our adventure team, Nat, Liam and Vic, having left the night before, we hooked up with some other canadian buddies we had made at the hostel for an early morning Bungee Jump. With us and the other guys a little slower to get going than planned (they a least had an excuse having gone out the night before) 6 of us jumped into two taxis. Chrissie was not planning to jump having decided on a more serene paragliding adventure for the afternoon, however was eager to come along to see us plunge into our impending doom and capture it on camera for posterity. Arriving at the bridge we soon witnessed that this was not just any bungee, the bungee bouncy band was simply tied onto the bridge and the rudimentary ... read more

Day 708 (07.03.09) We were planning a monster day of walking and more adventure stuff, but soon realised that we just wouldn't be able to fit it all in - there's just way too much to do around here for our limited time! We eventually opted for a day out in a local town and a walk around the local area with the mates we'd met at the hostel. Starting off with a fruit feast from the local market for brekkie we found a minibus destined for Barichara and our first stop on our day out. After wandering around the stunning colonial town we stopped off for another amazing set lunch at a local restaurant (3 courses for 1 pound 50) before setting off on the hour and a half walk down the hill to another ... read more

Day 707 (06.03.09) Another day of adventures, this time we were going down under into the Vaca caves in Curiti not far from San Gil with our now established english and ozzie adventure activities group. Jumping in a minibus taxi a little later than planned we arrived at the office to our rather shy but nice guide Freddie. With hard hats and dodgy caving lamps in hand we took the 5 min walk through some local fields from the office to the cave entrance wondering quite what was in store for us. The cave entrance looked quite innocuous as we approached, slightly buried in the bushes with an old metal ladder leading down into a crack in the rock. Once we were all in there we started our descent into the caving systyem. A couple of ... read more

Day 706 (05.03.09) It turns out that San Gil is pretty much the adventure capital of Colombia and the list of activities available is as long as your arm. With still relatively few travellers hitting Colombia the prices are also at bargain levels and the set up for the activities very non-commercial which all suited us just fine. We had perused the list and chosen a few to keep us busy over the next few days of adrenalin fuelled action. With a nice and fairly leisurely 9am start we had an action packed day ahead of us. We had joined a group of guys and gals from the hostel for a day on the white water. For our rafting we had two choices, the first a low budget fun filled laugh of a day on grade ... read more

Hi all, We are back in Bogota after spending a mini 12 day trip to the coast and back. Vicky and her boyfriend Eric came to visit us on October 23rd and we wanted to show them the best areas of the country we have found. We were on a very quick pace to show them as much of the country as possible in 12 days, which is no easy task. Our trip started off showing Vicky and Eric around different areas in Bogota. After getting their yellow fever vaccinations at the airport we went to San Andresito, an area in south Bogota that sells just about everything under the sun at a discounted rate. Some of the items are counterfeit and others are legit. We then went back to the 'Plaza De Simon Bolivar' to ... read more
