having rafted the futaleufu, espolon, azul, palena, and tigre rivers in chile and the quijos, jondachi and jatunacu in ecuador, i decided to trial colombia. i headed to san gil in the santander region in march 2011. i was there to raft the fonce, chicamocha, and suarez rivers and check out the area. i accessed san gil by flying to bucaramanga and then got a ride to san gil over the crazy, truck-ridden road through the chicamocha canyon to san gil, about a 3 hour ride. my gudes were grace and christian, owners of rio expediciones in san gil. the first day, i rafted the class 3-4 rio fonce, which runs right through town. christian guided the 2 passenger duckie-sit-on-top kayak and we had a great run on the fonce, with 2 short unintentional swims. after ... read more

SAN GIL, LA PERLA DEL FONCE Este fin de semana fue muy agradable pues viajamos a la capital de la provincia Guanentina (donde nacieron los indios Guanes, con su cacique que, en tiemplos de la conquista, prefirio suicidarse en vez de entregarse al enemigo Español, asi como yo :), si, nada mas y nada menos que la ciudad de San Gil, un lugar colonial a una altura de 1114 msnm, una temperatura que oscila entre 16 y 32 grados centigrados y con un área de 145 kilómetros cuadrados. Hallo Zusammen.... Nach dem schmuken Doerfchen Villa de Leyva fuhr ich mit dem Bus nach San Gil. Eigentlich ware die Fahrt nur ca. 5h, doch da die Strasse zum Teil geflickt wird (Sie hatten einen Erdrutsch) hatte ich eine Reisedauer von ca. 7h! San Gil ist auch ein herziger Ort, auch klein, aber nicht so klein wie Villa de Leyva. In San Gil kann man hervorragend Adventures Sport machen, wie Riverraften, Paragliding, Wasserfall-Abseilen etc. Auf Empfehlung von anderen Reisenden ging ich in Sam's Hostel. Das ist wirklich ein herziges Hostel, mit Dachterasse und sogar einen kleinen Swimmingpool, direkt bei der Plaza und das Personal war auch super freundlich und hilfsbereit :-) Am naechsten Tag ging ich zum Parque de Gallineral. Hallo zusammen Natuerlich mussten ich auch den hohen Wasserfall (Cascadas de Juan Curi) sehen, der ist naemlich 180m hoch und hat mehrere Ebene! Wir machten uns auf den Weg. Zu fuenft ich, Wolfgang von Oesterreich, Mr. Wu von Suedkorea, und Michiel von Holland, Astrid auch von Holland. Dort angekommen sieht man gleich den Wasserfall, das witzige ist, dass der Wasserfall quasi einem "Privaten" gehoehrt, da es sein Grundstueck ist, somit muss man auch Eintritt zahlen. Ha, ha... man muesste mal bedenken, in der Schweiz wuerde jemandem einzelnen das Matterhorn gehoeren oder auch ein Wasserfall :-) Nun ja, wir machten uns auf den Weg, damit wir zum Pool kamen. Whew man! It´s hot here in San Gil! A huge difference from Bogota, where we were wearing our fleece jackets every day. However, it´s our last day here because tonight we will take an overnight bus up to Taganga, a hippie fishing village on the Carribbean coast. It´s supposed to be even hotter there, but at least we´ll be on the beach!
