Bogota Travel Blogs

Background: Colombia was one of the three countries that emerged from the collapse of Gran Colombia in 1830 (the others are Ecuador and Venezuela). A 40-year insurgent campaign to overthrow the Colombian Government escalated during the 1990s, undergirded in part by funds from the drug trade. Although the violence is deadly and large swaths of the countryside are under guerrilla influence, the movement lacks the military strength or popular support necessary to overthrow the government. An anti-insurgent army of paramilitaries has grown to several thousand strong in recent years, challenging the insurgents for control of territory and the drug trade, and also the government's ability to exert its dominion over rural areas. While Bogota steps up efforts to reassert government control throughout the country, neighboring countries worry about the violence spilling over their borders.

COOL BOGOTA South America » Colombia » Bogota
Heavy traffic greeted us in Bogota, despite that though I just have that inkling that i will like this city, its huge! We got dropped off at the central terminal and took a taxi to our hostel in Candelaria, Destino Nomad. The taxi driver got lost and confused and blamed Lucy for it! He missed a turn and had to go back around again, we told him he was the driver so he should know where to go! Made it and checked in, the receptionist wasnt very friendly, we got nice dorm rooms but i feel its too sterile. Anyhow we [View Full Entry]

All of you that think dangerous, FARC guerilla, cokaine, bribes and hidden guns behind the closed doors when you hear Colombia - think again. Surely that exist here too, as in so many other places, but during the less than a week that I have spent in Bogota, I have seen and experienced so much more. I don't know where to start; the nice people, the lovely city center of Bogota, the Gold Museum, the splendid viewpoint, the salsa dancing or the food. So let's start from the beginning. I left France last Tuesday, but almost did not leave it. I [View Full Entry]

Last Saturday Carolina and Felipe took me to the coolest restaurant I have ever been to in my life. This restaurant is located in a place called Chia, outside of Bogota, so it takes a while to drive there. When arriving I actually wondered if there was a theme park or a tivoli or something, and then Carolina turned around and said "we're here". Hm.... I thought. The restaurant is huge and is just.... PSY-KE-DE-LIC!!! There are tons of different rooms, stairs and corners and a big dancefloor and decorations, tons of decorations. I actually cannot describe it, but I just [View Full Entry]

A 1.5 hour plane flight beats a 16 hour bus ride anytime!! Adam Caplan and I arrived into Bogota and checked into our hostel for the next few days, the Cranky Croc. To anyone traveling to Bogota...stay here b/c it was seriously one of the nicest hostels I have ever stayed at! While we were waiting for the other Adam to arrive, Caplan and I partook in the hostel's friday night BBQ. Alex, the literal do-everything at the hostel, cooked up deliciously tender steaks that could easily hold up to any of the stuck-up steakhouses found in the states. Cohen stumbled [View Full Entry]

Hi all, Here´s the first of many travel blogs hopefuly... Took off from England, then Spain, and met a nice Colombian who i chatted with on the flight over which made the journey shorter and more interesting (hi Miguel) Stayed in a pretty ordinary hotel which was also expensive, so after sleeping for 12 hours straight (despite a street party with full sound system right outside my window!) i decided to move on. Saw the main sqaure in Bogata which is faced by grand churches and museums. Left the next day to Bucarramanga on a ten hour bus ride through spectacular [View Full Entry]

Hello all. ·In case you missed the memo, I've left a job I love to travel South America. My plans of buying a one-way ticket to Colombia were slightly foiled at the airport in Toronto when the Air Canada agent told me you are required to have a ticket out of the country. I told her I was taking a bus to Equator, but she wasn't budging. Panic mode set in as she told me the flight was closing in 15 minutes and I had to go buy a ticket out of the country. I promptly "borrowed" a baggage cart from [View Full Entry]

When traveling, there are only two reasons a backpacker doesn't go out to party at night in a city like Bogota: 1. He has no money. 2. He doesn't want to get mugged. For me, the latter is most definitely true. Such is the reason I find myself deep in a game of poker with 7 guys at the youth hostel Destino Nomada, enjoying the relative comfort and security of being off the street, without a money belt digging into my pelvis bone. I can pretty much guarantee that these 7 guys are staying in tonight because they have no cash. [View Full Entry]

My first taxi ride in Bogota involved a lot of fearing my personal safety. Can you blame me? After all, I had just stepped off the flight, during which I had carefully read LP's in-depth warnings to women (and related horror stories) about taking a taxi alone after dark. But my flight was delayed, and I was to arrive after 9pm. What choice did I have? So the entire ride from the airport I am clutching nervously at my bag, steadily holding down the broken lock on the door, and staying more alert than I have ever been in my life. [View Full Entry]
