Hello all!! It´s been awhile but nothing really new has been going on. But I did start my classes this week, or at least half of them. My Spanish classes started, thank goodness, but my geography classes haven´t, apparently they start next week. I figured this out by showing up to them and having no one else but other gringos (it´s not a bad word here) present. But I think I finally have it down! But today I´m off to Pucón, it´s about a 12 hour bus ride south! But it should be a lot of fun, there are a lot of lakes and parks that you can go hiking around. And then my friend and are planning a trip down to Patagonia for later in the month. But when i get back I´ll post more ... read more

Oh I did sign up for classes and here, you pick a bunch of classes and then at the end of the month you pick which ones you want for the rest of the semester. Hola from crazy hot Chile, My flights were...ok, the day really started off interesting when i was ´randomly´ chosen for a security check at security in calgary. but after that everything was fine, i made all my connections and it all went as smoothly as can be expected. the flight from miami (which is the smelliest airport with all the random people and humidity - 20 degrees at 8pm crazy!!) to santiago was really long but the airline was amazing, i got to watch 2 movies, listen to music, watch TV and play video games all night...plus there were 2 meals and complimentary booze, which led me and the chilean guy beside me to drink scotch at 2am and watch cartoons. so when i got here at 7 in the morning yesterday i was a little ... read more

At the hostel in Santiago I met Rory and Angus, two brothers from Perth who were in South America partly on business and partly on pleasure. Despite a number of arguments with them concerning football (they were Eagles fans) I decided to tag along with them to Valparaiso, about 2 hours away on the coast. It wasn´t originally on my itinerary, but I got along well with the lads and thought it wasn´t too significant a detour. I´m glad I did. Valparaiso is an interesting place with a fascinating history (sorry, if you want to know about that you are going to have to google it yourself). Hola So it´s official, I¨m a blogger. I´m not a huge fan of this form of communication but it seems the best for keeping in touch and sharing pictures. Day one i arrived at Santiago Airport with Anthony waiting just out immigration. After a brief pow-pow we decided to head to Valparaiso an old port town directly west of Santiago. Valparaiso surpassed our expectations. 11 hills surrounding one of the oldest ports in Chile. It was a bit seedy but in a fascinating way. We sat for hours on the pier watching young and old men fish with spools of line wrapped around cans, pvc or round pieces of wood called catalinas with a hook and a piece of squid.
