Summer Vacation, Part 3- Southern Chile South America » Chile » Vina del Mar » Viña del Mar By Bowmen16April 26th 2007Tori Lynn ScottAfter Bariloche, Argentina we took a bus that crossed back over into Chile. Our first stop was Puerto Montt to visit Carlos´ aunt whom he hadn´t seen in like 10 yrs. When I say chileans don´t travel, they don´t tarvel inside their own country either. 10 years!!! This part of Chile is called the Lake District because tons of lakes are scattered throughout the region. It is beautiful and reminds me a lot of Oregon. It is overcast, ... read more

Summer Vacation, Part 2- Bariloche, Argentina South America » Chile » Vina del Mar » Viña del Mar By Bowmen16April 24th 2007Tori Lynn ScottFrom Mendoza, we traveled 18 hrs south to Bariloche, Argentina. Bariloche is a famous sky resort in the winter and boasts a land full of lakes and mountains and lots of great chocolate!!! This might have been my favorite place on our trip. The weather was cold but sunny and the meat we ate there was incredible. I dont know why but every vacation I take, the highlight is always the food! hahaha... read more

Hello all! I finally have time to write about Perù. Lima was great; we stayed in Miraflores, which is like a sub-city of Lima. It was very touristy which also made it the nice part of Lima. But after three nights in Lima we went down to a little beach town called Punta Hermosa. And let me just say the trip down there may have been one of the most weirdest journeys of my life! It started off all right, there were too many of us so we had to get two taxies to the bus station. I was in the second group and we arrive at the bus station and take off okay and were on the right bus. But while we were on our way down there my friend keeps asking the driver ... read more

As of Monday, I was flying solo on trip for my first time since leaving home back in February. Quite nervous, it is a very different experience to go at it alone. As a towsome you always know you have your travel back up some one to turn to for a query or problem if needed. Whether it may be to complete a broken phrase in spanish to the hostel front desk, catch the amount of a grocery bill or spot you on a round of drinks. Feeling slightly lost I decieded to head out to the town of Valpariso, 2 hours west of Santiago. Lonely planet described it as a town contarsted by manly ports and feminine hills, kudos to them on another beautiful aliteration! Upon my arrival I was slightly dishearted as the ... read more

Written in the garden city of Vina Mel Mar, Chile... 10. CHildren - Chile is the land of school aged children and uniforms. You can not squeeze your backpacked self through a sidewalk without passing hords of identically clad youth. In addition we have had the most family oriented hostels to date in Chile. In many cases children of the family are already proving to parents their aptitude for the hosteling business through the daily upkeep of sweeping and the straightening of area rugs. 9. CHeap - I do not refer here to money but rather to the lack of any toilet paper, anywhere. It is non-existent, you either BYOTP or drip dry at your own risk. 8. sCHop - Instead of our cherished beer sales in the streets of Brazil, Chile has full heartedly ... read more

Hola guapos y guapas, I am on my second night in Valparaiso, about 2.5 hours north of Santiago, it is a port townwith about 45 cerro, cerro meaning basically large hill on which tiny micro villages that are in their own world live at the top accessed by ancient wooden funinculars, taking you through endless unplanned old cobbled streets lined with corrugated tin houses in pastel and neon colours, with kids running round singing and playing futbol, a multitude of stray dogs and cats all wanting to be patted and lying about in the best patches of sun sleeping all day. and shedloads of excellent graffiti on every surface that thankfully no one has tried to cover up. I am staying tonight in a hospedaje in cerro concepcion, with a grand horizon view of the sea ... read more

To fill in time while awaiting my new gadget to arrive we spent 2 nights in Valparaiso, a coastal city, near Santiago. We stayed at a really nice Hostel at the top of a acsensor, a little railcar up a vertical incline, pulled by cables. Steep at hell. It was so nice to only have a small pack and not have to lug the big ones. We left the big packs at the hostel in Santiago. We still had alot of steps to climb to the hostel and it was a bit of a slog. The hostel was in an open air museum, alot of art painted over the walls in the neighbourhood. We went to the Valparaiso Naval Museum, this was up another acsensor. This was a really good museum and covered all the Naval history ... read more

Hello!! As I´m sure you are all aware that Easter was yesterday and mine was spent a little different then in the past. We went back out to the YMCA camp and went swimming in a pond/stream. I forgot my bathing suit so I just put my legs in the water. But after we were there for a few hours we went back and had lunch that was huge!! After that my Chilean brother got the chain saw and we went to go cut up a fallen tree branch. After many problems we the chain saw we finally got the majority of it cut and took all the wood back to the car. We then had "once" and is the spanish number 11, which is where you just have tea/coffee and bread and maybe a ... read more

What a transition from island Chiloe to the bustling port of Valparaiso! Shipping containers piled high on the docks, megaships in the harbor steered by tugboats, the Chilean navy, all spur contemplation of global commerce and international trade, just as the bus trip here through Chile´s central valley prompted thoughts of agribusiness. Chiloe´s salmon and shellfish mega farms ship internationally, and from the central valley wine, berries, beef, from the north copper, who knows what else. Do I really need Chilean raspberries from the coop out of local season, and why are they so cheap... Easter week is a big family and vacation time in urban Chile, and Valparaiso is crowded with families enjoying the warm sunny weather. The local daily paper boats a 95% hotel reservation rate for this weekend. Yesterday afternoon and evening ... read more
