Friday 25/05 we had first night out on the town. We hit the bars with our Spanish School classmates and scored $5 cocktails (the traditional Pisco Sour), giant beers and hmmm, interesting tapas enjoyed with classic eighties tunes. The following day, sore heads in tow, we found something worth crossing the Pacific for! We spent two days with our German housemate Julia exploring the maze-like hills of Valparaiso and it´s beachside cousin, Viña del Mar. Valpo is a gorgeous port city perched on the cliffs overlooking the ocean. Many of the houses date back hundreds of years and most are painted in bright colours, the streets wind up the hill forever so our walks around town were a great preparation for the long walks to come! So after two weeks in Chile we passed our ... read more

Hey all!! I know it's been awhile since I have last updated but nothing new has really happened. I've been sick for the past week and will probably have this cough for awhile too. It is rather cold here too. It looks like it would be a nice day and then you step outside the door and you figure out the sun played a joke on you because it is so cold. But I'm hoping this weekend to go get some boots and warmer clothes in Santiago this weekend. But yeah, that's really it. Oh, I'm more then half way done. I can't believe that I have already been here three months! It sure has gone by fast!! Well I'll talk to you all later! Love Lindsay... read more

Having been in Santiago over a week we decide to go off on a little adventure and get a rather nice 3 hour Tur bus to the coastal town of Valparaiso. We have a mini mission from the bus station and still can´t find our hostel - so where do we go for directions, the local gun shop of course!!! Eventually find our hostel up one of the many steep hill roads and are greeted by Tim - a cool guy from America who works there! He points us in the direction of food and off we go! After a rather confusing discussion with the lady who owns the bottleshop we return to the hostel with 2 rather large, rather cheap bottles of beer!!! Then we sit in and watch a film before the whole hostel ... read more

This blog is to share with you that my boyfriend Carlos has finally tried a s´more!!! While it is not the traditional kind roasted over a a fire (a gas stove just isn´t the same) it is as close as we will get here. And they don´t have Hershey´s chocolcate bars (the thinner bars. Here they are thicker and have nuts or other things in them) so I brought a few from home. It is always fun to watch him try new things, especially gringo/american things. But he loved it! Next I want him to try it with peanut butter! mmmmm....my favorite!!! I have made all of these things for him to try since he never has: !. S´mores 2. Strawberry Shortcake 3. All-American Hamburger 4. Tuna Salad (their salads are lettuce with tomatoe and ... read more

So not much new has happened. Last weekend I went to Pablo Neruda´s house, he is a famous poet. His houses (he has three) are really interesting, just the way that they are set up. I really liked it. We also walked through the open sky muesum, at least that what it is translated to, it´s just an ourtdoor muesum. The were murals on the sides of buildings, it was really neat. This weekend, we are going to his other house near Valparaíso. I´m really looking foward to that. And like at home this Sunday is Mother´s Day, so Happy Mother´s Day Mom, and of course to all the other mothers reading this!! Well that is really it for now! I´ll talk to you all later!! Love Lindsay... read more

After our tumultuous ferry ride back to the mainland from Chiloe and after reassuring Carlos that we are not going to die, we took the bus back to Puerto Montt. From their we headed to Valdivia, our last stop on our summer vacation. Valdivia is located where the Calle-Calle, Valdivia and Cau-Cau Rivers join and was founded in 1555 by Pedro de Valdivia. During the 19th century, to jump-start economic development, the Chilean government initiated an immigration program which forged strong ties with German. Thousands of Germans settled in this area and Validvia continues to have a very strong German influence from the architecture to the cuisine. In 1960, Chile suffered the most powerful earthquake in modern history, a 9.5 magnitude, and Valdivia was only 10km from its epicenter. This destroyed a large portion of ... read more

From Puerto Montt we headed north to the island of Chiloe. This i what wikipedia says about the island, ¨In part because of its physical isolation from the rest of Chile, Chiloé has a very special architecture and local culture. The Spanish, who arrived in the 16th century, and Jesuit missionaries who followed, constructed hundreds of small wooden churches in an attempt to bring Christianity to a pagan land; the result was a mixing of Catholicism and pagan beliefs. These unique buildings have been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.¨ It has a very distinct culture and great, cheap seafood! Because it is an island and has a lot of rain a lot of the houses are built on stilts over the water. They are called palafitos. We spent 3 days here. One day we ... read more

Hello all! I didn’t write about last weekend and I wanted to do that before this upcoming weekend. Last Saturday my program went to Horcòn and Zapallar. They are both really cute beach towns but sadly it was a rather cold and gloomy day. But Horcòn is famous for their empanadas, so we obviously had to test them out. I had a shrimp empanada and then later a crab empanada, and I must say that they can keep their reputation. When we arrived in Zapallar I fell in love. It is definitely an upper class town but it was gorgeous! It had a pretty small beach and then just trees and hills surrounding it, making it seem very secluded. While we were there, we walked along a rode and saw a little artesian stand so we ... read more

Well Im sorry if the next few blogs are short. I am sick and i think my memory is a little shot. There will also be no more pics. Me and linda both dont have digitals anymore so we have forced to use an old school camera. Well our first day in the city was a little hectic. We ended up getting very lost and ended up getting a nice tour of the more ghetto area of the city. The area hills are stacked with houses in which they have elevators that will take you to your house. By the time we found our way home it was dark and the city is not safe to roam around at dark. The next day we took a harbor tour. It was cool because they houses look really ... read more

Almost finished with Chile after three and a half weeks here...which seems like only a few days (well apart from THAT boat trip). Since the last entry we have been engaging in very un-budget-backpacker activities including a wine tour and trip to the casino. Yes, we´ve been livin´the high life. This will be a short one as the space bar must have had a run in with a can of Fanta and isstickingsoallthewordsaretogether. Anyway, we leave for Bolivia tomorrow - flying from about 200m above sea level to 3,600 metres. So we expect some ill effects from the altitude for a day or two. Valparaiso grew on us...especially once the weather improved and the sun came out. The city is a bit like Brighton, and infact one of the B&Bs is called BrightonB&B. The first day ... read more
