When we originally planned this trip, we didn't plan on staying in Chile for more than a couple of days. Now I remember why - there's really not an awful lot to do here! After spending an unstrenuous week in Santiago, we decided to venture up the road a bit and take in the sights of Valparaiso, a UNESCO world heritage site. It's another big city and there are people milling about absolutely everywhere making walking down any of the main streets a bit of a headache. The Chilean people have this habit of walking in a row regardless of how many people may be in their group or whether they are taking up the entire pavement. It's not uncommon to find a line of 5 or 6 family members coming towards you all holding hands ... read more

WEEK 9 CHILE AGAIN Fe wasn't very impressed with Bariloche- far too touristy and she was keen to move on. Before we left I took the chair lift to the top of Otto Cerro - renowned to be one of the best views in Argentina. The views over the lake - Lago Naheul Huapi, islands, Bariloche and environs was magnificent. Looking down on hovering birds of prey and paragliders was an experience. I enjoyed a lovely 2 hour walk along the ridge and through beautiful lenga forest with wild flowers. Fe managed to sample the chocolate - a speciality of the town and she led the search for a vegetarian restaurant. During the hunt a lady saw we were lost and asked us to kindly wait a moment while she rushed indoors to get her specs ... read more

The boyfriend!!! yes, he is chilean and no I am not living here forever South America » Chile » Vina del Mar » Viña del Mar By Bowmen16February 15th 2007Tori Lynn Scott For those who have not heard, I have found myself a prince charming, way south of the globe in Chile. Carlos and I met in June of last year. I was the lonely, pathetic gringa at a church group get-together in Santiago. I went with my church from Viña to their sister church in Santiago. Carlos and I met and were friends. I, from the very moment I had decided to come to Chile, said I WILL NEVER date a la... read more

Valparaiso The next day we again tried unsuccessfully to connect with our couch-surfing connection and decided to go it on our own to the neighboring port city and former capital (or main seat of the government) of Valparaiso. We quickly figured out the metro and we soon walking around the colorful, unique city. Much like the FUN-icular in Santiago...there are many what they call "Ascensors" running up and down the hills of the city. The entire city is squished into the hills that rise out of the sea. We rode a few and explored around. We were interested by (and a little weary of) the fact that these were built around the turn-of-the-century (you know the one over a hundred years ago!!). They didn´t look to have changed much. We enjoyed looking out over the city, ... read more

KJ´s going to try to recount any and all interesting happenings on this wee leg of the journey. Viña del Mar When we decided to go to Santiago, it seemed a natural side trip to check out Viña del Mar and Valparaiso. We also had some response via the couch-surfing website and hoped to surf our first night with a local. So, we got a bus from Santiago. Buses go something like every 15 minutes from the capital to Viña, so we had no problem getting one. We waited something like 6 minutes. We were told, however, that getting a return bus on a Sunday from this popular weekend destination was next to impossible without advance reservations. But we were mid-week, so had no problems. The bus ride was short (thankfully) and rather uneventful, except that ... read more

Viña is one of Chile’s premier resorts, and we hit it at peak time! Quite why we don’t know because the weather wasn’t as fabulous as expected and the sun rarely came out before 2pm. Thinking we had come across some anomalous weather I asked around only to find that it’s always like this in February! Despite the disappointment with the weather we loved Viña. It’s hard to say exactly why but the general atmosphere was much nicer than Valpo. It is also very clean in comparison. I wanted to go to the Casino but our money was perfectly safe - it costs US$5 to enter and gentlemen require a jacket and tie (what about ungentlemanly backpackers?!). The beaches are nice but the enormous rollers crashing onto the shore from the Pacific Ocean certainly put me ... read more

We left Santiago looking forward to hitting the beaches, but instead we hit 3 days of cloudy skies. Only at 6pm on our last evening did the sun come out!! Valpo wasn’t our favourite place. We had expected something small and quaint with beautiful funicular railways running up and down its many hills. Instead we found a place looking tired and unloved, in need of a good clean and a lick of paint. It was also suffering after a huge gas explosion and fire ripped apart part of the historic quarter the night before our arrival. The acrid smell of smoke still lingered in the air. But let’s look at the positives! It has an excellent Metro train system to get you away from town! The funiculars are very cheap and good fun to ride, although ... read more

Because it took so long for us to add photos to our past two entries (please check them out), I was going to treat you to an entry with nothing BUT photos. However, the photo gods continue to hate us, and I cannot post Tahiti photos at this time, so I´ve given up on the photos-only idea altogether. Tahiti in a nutshell: Air Tahiti is a dream, and if you ever go to French Polynesia, try to score a flight with them. We arrived at the airport, and the greeting was what I associate Hawaiian greetings in movies: pretty smiling chicks handed you flowers and a band of little old men played traditional music. As we were figuring out how to get from the airport to our hostel, two young, lost-looking Swedes asked Kate where she ... read more
