Sarah had designed a girls wine tasting night since she is the wine expert. She made the decisions of which wine's to purchase and we then got cheese and chocolate because it brings out the taste in the wine (new knowledge to me). To make it more fun, I logged down what everyone said it smelled like. So if you would like to know what we had said....then read on. P.S. Sarah- I heard about your job that you received and I am so proud and so happy for you. Even though your intern didn't turn out as planned, you still managed to succeed like we all knew you would. LOVE YOU and MISS YOU TONS!! The Transcript: by ME Aresti-Sauvignon Blanc 2003 Sarah: Grapefruit Carina: wine Jennie: Cheezy Lauren: white grapefruit juice Emi: Apple, citrus ... read more

Renacca is a neighboring town that is still considered to be Vina. I have gone there several times already and in fact experienced my first strong earthquake on this beach. Something I new that Chile was known for but was not informed about how often it happens. I have to admit I have been crazily excited to feel each earthquake that occurs. Call me crazy, but it was so exciting. I will never forget my first frantic phone call from Sara asking me if we had just had an earthquake. I was so bummed because I missed it because I happened to be out on the street. She is such an awesome girl and a great friend to have here in Chile. She and I have bonded since our first day of class. She's a Jersey ... read more

Have been taking Salsa classes for a few weeks and have made some good friends from the class. Almost every Monday and Wednesday Jennie and I go to a local bar with the other people that always go to dance salsa to sit around and talk and just hang out at a place called Legolas (pretty sure). I even celebrated my birthday in the same bar with some of the people from the salsa club, as well as Roberto and Barbarita. The most exciting part of my birthday was when they did their traditional birthday celebration called "Manteo". The guys, after everyone knowing it was going to be my birthday at midnight, grabbed me and decided to throw me in the air repetitively while counting for my age. I have to admit, it was rather fun. ... read more

I thought I´d be spending my time in Valparaiso and Viña del Mar kicking back on the beach getting some sun but it is actually colder here than it was in Santiago...and not nearly as clean. Valparaiso is an old fishing village with stray cats and dogs at your heels every step of the way. I thought it was going to be similar to the Italian Riviera but it is more like parts of Mexico, with bright houses stacked upon houses built into the side of hills that drop into the ocean (unfortunately ports and docks instead of beaches). The roads and layout of the city doesn´t really make sense and (from experience) one wrong turn will get you lost and out of breath in no time climbing up the hills. Luckily I met some good ... read more

If you could see this place through the photographs my eyes have taken today you would appreciate its beauty in its fullest. I have added this place to my list of sights as one of the absolute most beautiful places my eyes have ever seen. The sad part is that I only had the privilege to see this beach only once just before it got too cold for the beach setting. However, one time is better than none and I am glad my eyes had the chance to see something so utterly amazing. Getting there was definitely a little on the tricky side. We all gathered at the house here because it is located closer to where all the buses run. All we knew about how to get there was from advice and word of mouth. ... read more

Okay- so its been awhile and a lot has happened. I arrived here in Viña on the 20th and have been busy ever since. I life in a beautiful house in Viña del Mar and attend the Universidad Catolica in Valparaiso. The two cities are different but next to each other so are considered as one. It takes only 10/15 mins for me to get from my house to the University. I am only a few blocks away from the beach--where i have been spending all my free time of course- and only 3 blocks from one of the most popular bars for the students. Claudio (my host dad) is 41 and is a civil engineer. He also raises pure breed german shepards and participates in dog shows--his dogs are some of the best in Chile ... read more

Hola Amigos Here's the next update: If you are into mullets, you´d love it down here - i´d say at least 30% of the population has a mullet - and half of them are really greasy. The 30% doesn´t include the 10% who have rat-tails. Yes, rat tails. I thought they disappeared in the 80´s, but not here. I´ve even seen a few people with multiple rat-tails. Come to think of it, there entire culture is stuck in the 80´s. I´ve heard more Michael Jackson in the past 3 weeks than I have in my entire life. Other popular groups include: Culture Club, Elvis, Bon Jovi, Cyndi Lauper, Queen, old school Madonna. 80´s music blares on the buses, the bars, the dance clubs, just about everywhere. I found an apartment yesterday. There was a teacher at ... read more

For part of Independence Day vacation Carlos and I went to Mendoza, Argentina...again. This is my 3rd trip, Carlos´2nd. Mendoza is such a nice, clean, calm, friendly place to visit. It´s cheap and the food is great! So we figured why not. This blog has photos of the HUGE park, the zoo and the crossing back into Chile! It was very cold and long.... read more
