Wed. 21st. After a good scout round the city, the jury is still out on Mendoza - surely, we can't be going off Argentina. Thurs. All set to go to Parque San Matin on the trolley bus, when the hotel receptionist panicked about taking valuables with us. She even insisted we leave the camera behind, so therefore I'm convinced we're going to get murdered at the very least. Consequently we missed the chance of some fabulous photos. The place was as safe as houses, thank goodness. The park is reportedly the largest in the Americas, and is well worth a visit. The tourist bus cost one pound for an hour's trip, and it doesn't even scratch the surface. The highlight for us was the Liberty Statue on Glory Hill. The most striking monument we have ever ... read more

Our last blog... sigh. At least we covered a lot of ground since the last one. We spent some time in Mendoza, Argentina, then moved on to Horcón, Valparaiso, and Santiago in Chile. I know you’re probably thinking, “Wow! With that many destinations, this is sure going to be an action-packed blog!” Well, cool your heels missy. I’m afraid that our time was mainly spent doing such fun but uninteresting things as: eating copious amounts of the insanely cheap Argentinean blue cheese ($1.50 for 300 g), eating copious amounts of cheap and fresh cherries ($1 per kilo), eating ice cream… well a lot of eating, really. Well, we did drink, too, since the wine is very cheap and good (we drank some good Malbecs). Of course, we have an excuse: the heat. It has been prohibitively ... read more

Our next stops were brief visits to the beautifully unique city of Valparaiso and the neighbouring Vina Del Mar. Valparaiso is a city built on hills and travelling around the city and up and down the hills involves taking a ride on their many funicular elevators! Our local elevator, Cerro Concepcion is the city's oldest, and the odd rickety noises kinda reminded us every so often! The first of our two hostels in Valpo kind of resembled Alfred Hitchcock´s Psycho... think man living alone, picture of mother, hole in wall... hmmm lets just say, watch out when you pre-book accomodation! Anyway, we found a really cool hostel to stay in just around the corner, nice rooms, cool atmosphere, free breakfasts - all good so long as you can handle being chased by stray dogs at night! ... read more

Next I stopped at a small town called Vicuña, in an area famous for it´s vineyards. After a short rest in the park, where lots of children rode around in severely underpowered mini-trucks and hot rods, I trudged off to find a hotel. I finally stopped at the Valle Hermosa, and a man showed me to a room with two beds and a private bathroom. Later that night, the hotel owner struck up a conversation with me, and after we talked for a half hour, and after a few more hotel guests joined our conversation, he poured us all some local wine, and his wife made mini-pizzas. They were sure to point out the the extra one was for me, and not for the guys sitting around the table. I was still having quite a bit ... read more

Some of you may be wondering if I'm alive considering I haven't been on line much and haven't written a blog in quite some time. Well, es obvio que estoy viviendo!! Things are flying by as I have said previously in some other blogs, but faster now than ever considering that my time in Chile is coming to an end in a couple of weeks. My experience here in this country has been absolutly incredible. The pictures I have and the stories I'll have to tell will never really do much justice for all that I have experienced with my own eyes. I have meet some amazing people who will have a place in my heart forever. Living with Marlene has been great, because she is such a genuine person. In my eyes and in my ... read more

So my last day is today in Chile (and my last travelblog-for this journal at least-in South America--for the time being!)...and im super sad. I leave at 3pm to go to Santiago and then take the 8:35pm Delta flight to Atlanta, then to LaGuardia, take a taxi to JFK and then a 3pm flight to Burlington, getting in around4pm. It has been a stressful week trying to pack--im still not finished and am leaving a ton of stuff here :(, saying my good-byes---wayyy too emotional, and my exams. Turns out I only had one final, instead of two, which was a 10min oral exam--i just had to prepare a subject and talk about it-super easy, I studied for a whole day for the second one, only to arrive too early and then find out that I ... read more

"I try to take on one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once." It becomes overwhelming when you try to do a million things at once. I never thought I really had a problem with succeeding in that area, but here lately I haven't been able to do it. Maybe that's because I'm older and not such the spring chicken I use to be. The time is coming to an end, but the "to do list" seems to be getting longer. What's a girl to do?? Well today was my "despedida" with my family here in Chile. I have to start packing up my stuff tomorrow to move in with Marlene for my last month in Chile. Ema made home-made pizza and wine with grapefruit juice, and Jennie and I made ... read more

It's hard to believe that if I hadn't changed my flight ticket to stay longer, I would only have six more days in Chile. In saying that, I have six days left in the house I am currently living in with Ema, Roberto, and Jennie before I move in with Marlene. I stayed the night over at her place this week to translate a paper for her Master's study in Psychology that is in English. She got teary eyed when we started talking about me only having one more month left here in Chile. Then she sucked it up and said she wasn't going to cry yet because I will be living with her and we'll get to spend more time together and have a "Spanglish" style house. She's become a really good friend out of ... read more

After hearing stories from Emi, and Jennie about protests at UPLA I finally experienced a real one for myself. It wasn't just students in the middle of the street sitting in desks blocking the roads from busses passing; OH NO....I have to agree with Emi that this was "Más Violenta". I never in my life thought that I would have to run away from work in order to get onto a bus back to Viña del Mar. So, the story goes like this: I was minding my business upstairs in the loft doing work and thinking about what I was going to be packing for my trip to Buenos Aires, Argentina. I was alone today in the office so I really was in my own world. Then out of no where I hear "Niña hola, niña, ... read more
