At the risk of confusing my readers who are aware that I am currently in the United States I am sending the following entry describing a hike that occurred in Chile during the month of November. Two months ago when I traveled with Simon and Merete to Parque Nacional Campana we hiked halfway to the peak, stopping at La Area de La Mina. We arrived too late in the day to summit so were forced to turn around at that point. I was feeling confident that day, wanting to proceed and make an attempt at the peak. Had I walked around the next bend I may have changed my mind. This time there were no restrictions. As we began the hike it was a cloudy, drizzling day. On a clear day, when you reach the peak, ... read more

Now that Steve is back (YEAH!!), we’ve reevaluated our options and have decided to return to Albuquerque in January, in time for the boys to go to school for the last semester. We had a couple different plans for how this trip would play out. Returning in January follows Plan B (sort of), which was to just travel for the first 6 months and then settle in somewhere in February when the school year starts here. But various factors - Steve’s job, the boys’ schooling, missing Stella, and more—have made us decide to scrap this second part of the plan. (Plan A was to live in one place the whole year and use it as a base from which to travel throughout the year). It’s a little sad to think of leaving already because we have ... read more

Steve has gone back to the states to study and take his test. We are getting to know Vina del Mar and Chile, and starting to settle in. We had another visit with Jorge and Yoya and their family. They are such warm and welcoming people. We try our first mate, thatś "mah-tay". It is very strong!! Mas fuerte! And the hot straw is a bit weird, but I could get used to it. When asked what he likes about Chile, Oliver responded, “the ice cream!” Every corner has a popsicle/ice cream stand. You don’t see so much hand-made or scoop ice cream but you definitely see Popsicles. So we end up getting ice cream almost everyday. This is at least one of the foods that Ben and Oliver like here, since most of the Chilean ... read more

Many Chileans ask me why I moved to Chile, "para estudiar (to study), intercambio (an exchange), or solo para conocer (or only to know Chile)?" And my answer is that, para conocer, to know Chile. In order to continue my quest to know Chile, after spending the day in Maitencillo I went a bit further north to see the town of Zapallar. Zapallar is known for its historic mansions, a few of which are pictured in my blog. I walked a seaside path and enjoyed another day of solitude and studying on the rocks with the waves crashing around me. As the sun began to go down I watched a dolphin jump and dive along the shore. Very magical. There are not many accommodations for backpackers in Zapallar so I was fortunate to have a nice ... read more

We have just finished our first 24 hours in Valparaiso, or "Valpo" as its also known. And what a trip. We left Mendoza on Wednesday morning, later than we wanted, as always, and found our way onto Ruta 7, which snaked its way up toward the Andes, through a lower yet older range that looks out over Mendoza. The road was good, windy, yet not windy!! And so we made good progress upward. 20km from the border, we had lunch and ironically, our last meal in Argentian was mutton, not beef! Once we left the sleepy, out-of-season ski resort, we found the wind had picked up and it started to snow, although the flakes did not settle, so the road remained safe. We passed alongside Aconcagua, the highest peak of the Americas and reached the tunnel ... read more

Last month I shook up my normal back and forth routine to Santiago and hopped on a bus heading north of Valparaiso to a beach town called Maitencillo. A clue that I knew next to nothing about what I was doing was in the fact that I had to keep referring to my guidebook to remember how to pronounce the name. Think, think, and keep repeating to self... Maitencillo, Maitencillo, until it comes naturally. A bit like my problem with the artichokes. The driver asked where I would like to be left in town. I asked for "the center" and started to feel a bit worried when we drove past a large number of beachside shops all boarded up tight as can be. Ah yes, October is not the high season. I was left at a ... read more

Just a very quick blog to let you know im still moving around and loving the wonderful country of Chile. Ive moved on from Santiago now and spent a 2 hour bus journey north (mosly asleep though a small amount of self language tuition was done) travelling to Valparaiso. 110km north of Santiago Valpa is a city in 2 halfs the bottom section is pretty ordinary full of all the hustle and bustle youd expect in a modern urban city. My first night was spent feasting on empandanas (very tasty) and relaxing over a few beers with some Ozzys in my hostel. Then today fresh and ready for exploration i headed into the 2nd part of the city which truly defies all common sense and logic.. The high part of the city is made up of ... read more

We’re happy to say we have found a place to live, at least for now. Vina del Mar has many “second” homes. Since it is off-season, they are now vacant and for rent (furnished). We found a nice 3 bed, 3 bath apartment with a view and right on the beach. Something different for us, even if Vina del Mar is not very exotic to us in other ways. We moved in September 9th, but the rent will quadruple on December 31, so we will have to move on at some point. Just up the beach from our apartment are several parks, and an amusement park that is open every weekend. The boys love doing the bungee-jump! The beach gets lots of weekend visitors and folks selling crafts on the boardwalk. There are lots of dogs ... read more

It was no surprise that I fell to the ground from the last step leaving Casa Aventura. After all, it was Valparaiso that broke me only five days before. With nearly a week of Valpo experience under my belt, I was not so much embarrassed or frustrated as I was grateful that I hadn't landed in one of the ever present piles of dog poop found on the streets and sidewalks here. Valparaiso is a unique city with a beauty all its own. It is a port city and because of its Acensores, similar to outdoor elevators, and outrageously mazelike city plan, it was named a Unesco World Heritage site in 2003. Five days earlier I arrived on a bus from Santiago. I had grown accustomed to Santiago and was learning my way there and feeling ... read more

Well, well, well, we've finally made it to Valparaiso. After recovering from our overnight flight, we ventured out to discover it. Valparaiso is a comprised of a big port and many hills, called cerros, (we've heard there are about 41) that are filled with houses of various colors jumbled up on top of each other (or so it looks). The view of the bay from up on the hills is awesome. There are actually little pasajes (passageways) that allow you to walk away from the streets and between many of the buildings and it is a pleasant way to travel because there are no cars. People have painted their houses fun colors and there are murals all over the place. We found the Palacio Baburizza, which has a little plaza or park in front of it ... read more
