To make a long story short. I got a phone call to help deliver a 130ft Yacht from Rio de Janero, Brazil to Miami. I arrived in Rio on Oct 15th. I provisioned the boat for a 4 day crossing to the departure port and left a couple of days after my arrival. On the way we had different failures with the systems and now we are stock in a historic town called Recife. I will upload more details about this trip accompanied with photos. Today I went for a photo walk around historic downtown. I am loving all the colors, the art and the fisherman around me. Take a look....the photos will bring you here...... read more

Days 20-21 – Indonesian Crew Show; Recife & Olinda Sunday – Feb. 23/14 – At Sea Nice having two sea days in a row – puts a real level of relaxation into the “routine”. Once again Brooke & I headed off to do different things: she to the lecture by the guest geologist on “The Shale Revolution” and I to learn how to make Ensemada’s and Cinnamon Rolls – demonstrated by the head Baker Joel. The day’s highlight was the Indonesian Crew Show held at 2 pm instead of the regular 11:00 pm. The performance was extremely well attended, unlike the later time slot. The performances were by the Indonesian room and dining room stewards and we made a point of telling the dining room steward who make up more than 50% of the ... read more

Don't worry, Recife has never been very high on my wish-list...and it's still not after two days spent here....but we are on the way to the East...and a place which is supposed to be fabulous! We first did Santiago to Buenos Aires, than spent a short 12 hours in Buenos Aires before flying to Sao Paolo than Recife. This part of the trip was going to be trickier...as we have now with us all our bags of a year spent in Argentina. Not having a scale at home, I just had to guess what would be the damages....well...142kg in checked bags...and I guess something like 60kg in carry-on between 3 of us. I knew 142kg checked bag would hurt on TAM...it did...a little... and a first into paying for extra kilos for me for quite a ... read more

Der Eintritt hätte eigentlich ... read more

Alex had a work visit to Recife, on the northeast coast of Brazil, and Jenn tagged along. We stayed at a hotel right along the area’s nicest beach, Boa Viagem (Good Trip), but there isn’t any swimming allowed due to shark attacks. We went to a popular square, which turned out to be a bit shady, but we got to see some old churches and the farmer’s market. From there, we tried to take a taxi to an Italian restaurant, but had to take three taxis before a driver knew where it was. For the weekend, we headed north to an island “resort.” The first bad sign was when the taxi driver pointed out the nearby prison. Nevertheless, we continued on to the hotel with a room straight out of the 70s, including the linens. We’ve ... read more

Hello followers of our adventure! Today was the final day of work for us at the build site. After a long week of arduous work, we said good-bye to the locals and good-bye to shovels and wheelbarrows! I promised to give you more information about the families moving into the houses, so here it is: In the poor city of Feira Nova, the women of the community got together to form a women's council to address the issues they were facing. On the top of their list, the most important need and desire of these families was to have a house of their own. Renting is expensive and conditions are poor and sometimes they get ripped off. Habitat for Humanity got in contact with these women and together they formed a plan, 100 houses for 100 ... read more

Olá Pessoal! (Hey Everybody!) Our trip is underway! Team Thrivent has been in Brazil for two full days. Our team consists of 11 people, 10 citizens of the U.S. and one native Brazilian from Fortaleza, Henrique, who is our translator. Our team leaders are Mark and Bobby who work at Thrivent Financial, and they organized and planned the entire trip. Mark's son, Derek, who has been to Brazil once before on vacation joins his father, and Bobby's mother, Mary, and sister, Sharie, who are first timers in Brazil. Joining us are Karen and Ed (aka Senhor Eduardo) from Indiana, Glen from North Carolina, Marladean, and Rosemary. We all met up in Recife Saturday night at Hotel Jangadeiro on the coast for a welcome dinner and introductions. Dinner was buffet style, including fish, fruit, salads, soups, and ... read more
