Two Thousand and Six…it is kind of weird to think six years ago a lot of people were afraid that the Y2K was going to wreak havoc, but fortunately nothing happened. Six years ago I invited Heather to go to Seattle along with my buddy Alan for the Millennium Celebration. Well there was a bomb scare at the Space Needle which closed down all festivities so we passed up Seattle and decided Vancouver Canada was the next best place to party. We asked some locals where to go and they recommended the “First Night” celebration. We showed up, paid to get in, and then found out it was a celebrations for families, not the party we were expecting, but we made our own fun - and not to mention, that's where our romance all began. Feliz Natal, Frohe Weihnachten, Mele Kalikimaka, and Merry Christmas to everyone! It is amazing, my first Christmas away from home and as different as it has been, it was a wonderful and humbling experience. There was food, family, friends, music, dancing, and overall a fun time! I thought it would seem very awkward to celebrate such a huge day without family, but everyone here makes us feel like we are part of their Brazilian family and we love them for that. Each year we try to send out a Christmas card to all of our friends and family. For those of you that are reading this and thinking “I never got a card” well in the 6 years we have been together, I think we have only managed to send a card out one year, and ... read more

You know what one of the greatest things about traveling is? The food! And the experiences are all the more interesting if you are traveling in a foreign country. We have been very fortunate to try many different things these past few weeks and they all have been good (ok maybe one or two weird things). With that said, we have created a posting dedicated to food and at the end we will throw in some interesting facts we have experienced (or in Heather's case, re-experienced) during our visit here in Brazil. First of all, let me say that I am sure that somewhere in the Brazil Code or Constitution there is a law that states the following: If any family residing in the country of Brazil is to have someone visit from another country, then ... read more

Finally, finally, finally!!! I’ve finally returned to Brazil! And it has been a long time coming, too long really - it’s been seven years since I was last here as an exchange student. Even though I was very excited to return, as each mile passed by the more nervous I became about seeing everyone again and having to speak Portuguese. What will I recognize? More frightening, what won’t I recognize or remember - people, places, customs...? We arrived at the airport in Recife with no one to greet us, which was a little disconcerting, despite having made arrangements with my Brazilian family. As we anxiously waited, Ben pointed to everyone in the airport questioning whether I truly remembered what my own family looked like! Twenty minutes later and starting to doubt myself, my two sisters showed ... read more

Sao Paulo November 26, 2005 4:30pm Right now we are 35,000 ft over Brasil on a flight to Salvador. We made it to Sao Paulo earlier this morning and, so far, have had no problems! We had a 5 hour lay over there, but most of it was a blur since I rested my head our luggage and passed out and Heather read a book. One thing that came to my attention while hanging out here was that I have only learned about 3 words in Portuguese. One word is Obrigado for “thank you” and the other two words are food items, so not sure how much they will help! So I started having Heather teach me phrases like, My name is Ben (Eu sou Ben), Hello (Oi!), I don’t understand (Eu não entendo) and 1-2-3 ... read more
