NOTHING starts your day like a nice, luke-warm-turning-cold, shower. Yes, that´s right, it was so cold i couldn´t feel vital parts of my body. Oh, and before I forget, I had llama steak. And it was so leathery and chewy that I couldn´t feel my jaws when i was done (I know of someone who would´ve really enjoyed it in the past). Though, I have to say the meat was quite flavourful. And those HUGE corns! oh and they make huge popcorns with those huge corns on the street. I stumbled upon a street corner last night that reminded me of Times Square in NY. That´s right, the corner was so well lit you didn´t even need a flash to take pictures. And people were bustling around. The only difference was that this was a street ... read more

So I arrived at 1 in the morning. I have no idea what time zone this is... tried to do the math and just ended up really confused. 1st lil episode of drama: the hostel that I am staying at had their staff on some kind of strike, and so there was no reception after midnight. So, my trusty cab driver Jorge (jk, i dunno his name) drove me around and found me a hotel that was open. I ended up paying freaking 20 bucks for this place for one night, and bolted outta there early next morn. now i´m settled in my comfy Hostel Maya, right smack in the middle of Witch´s Market. The place is bustling with activity, and the people are all incredibly nice. my first meal in Bolivia? Lasagna. That´s right, I had ... read more

With slightly more stable stomachs we departed to the bus station in Cusco to travel to Puno. The train had looked very promising until we discovered it costs twice as much and takes four hours more. The bus it was then, only our bus company decided it lacked bov on that particular day, so a very friendly lady helped us swap buses. We spent the next eight hours at the front of a very busy double-decker, watching the altiplano go by through a smashed window - don't worry folks, they'd used sellotape to fix it. Push the Scottish highlands up by two thousand meters and stick some llamas and alpacas on it and you have something similar to our kaleidoscopic view. Puno was our last stop in Peru, and we were glad it wasn't our first ... read more

South America » Bolivia » Chuquisaca Department » Sucre April 3rd 2006

Sucre was a both necessary and welcome stop on my way to the Brasilien border. It is a town of many universities and has been the capital of Bolivia for a long time. Still today many ideas and political movments are said to have their origin here. My visit was more extended than planed because the Bolivian busdrivers went on strike to paralyse the country. Rising fuel prises made them call the government for a zero taxation. When their service started again after three days the government had promised to do so. Later I heared the promise wasn't kept as usual... Until I could catch a bus again I hung out with some young German fellows to play cards. For the first buses that left one had to pay double. Naturally, since many people were waiting ... read more

We have just been the highest we have both been in our lives (Mie has been higher). We are back in La Paz after climbing a mountain 5700m high. The whole experience was challenging, but totally worth it. We left Lap Paz on April 1st for Tuni, a small town in the middle of nowhere, we had lunch in a small house made of mud. Then collected our donkeys and set off with our bags on a 4 hour walk to base camp. We passed hills, streams, lakes and llamas on the way. It was beautiful. After a couple of hours walking we had the mountain in our sights, it looked huge and scarey. When we got to base camp our cook made us a hot drink and prepared the dinner, which was more rice with ... read more

South America » Bolivia » Potosí Department » Potosi April 1st 2006

Potosi was once the richest city of South America. Silver and other precious material has been mined from its Cerro Rico, meaning rich mountain, for more than four centuries. And a visit to this city is still impresive today. High in the Andes I could hardly catch my breath in the first days. At about 4100m Potosi is as high as human settlements get. While the vast number of churches and decorated colonial buildings testify the wealth of the past, the mines inside Cerro Rico still opperate today. For most of the men that are forced by the alternative of unemployment to deal with the grim reality of the mining job the situation has hardly changed compared to their comrades from the colonial times. During the mining history of Cerro Rico an estimated number of eigth ... read more

Have just completed my first week in Bolivia and to say that getting around this country has been eventful would be an understatement!! After crossing the border without the slightest hitch, I boarded a bus to head north to the town of Tupiza. After hearing horror stories about the state of Bolivian buses I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the vehicle - an assigned seat and a reasonable amount of legroom - although there was a definate whiff of piss coming from the aisles!!!. However, this was all to change as, after narrowly missing a fish-tailing truck heading the other way, we proceeded to have a blow-out at top speed. Luckily we ground to an unceremonious halt on the road, rather than in the scary looking ditch!! Anyhow, the conductor hitched a ride back ... read more

South America » Bolivia » La Paz Department » Tiwanaku April 1st 2006

La Paz was founded in 1548 with the name Nuestra Señora de La Paz (Our Lady of Peace). This name commemorated the restoration of peace following the civil war which started with Gonzalo Pizarro’s (Spanish conquistador) insurrection two years earlier. The city became the administrative capital in 1898, and is the seat of the Government (Sucre remains the nominal capital; the High Court of Justice also resides there). La Paz is also the highest capital in the world, situated at 3,600 m (11,800 ft) above sea level. At least that’s what the touristic brochures tell you. In fact, it is situated at three different altitude levels between (approximately) 2,800 (9,200 ft) and 4,000 metres (13,100 ft). At 4,000 m are the city of El Alto, the international airport and the poor neighbourhoods. At 3,600 m you ... read more

So after the inca trail we decided to have one more day in Cuzco to chill out before heading to Uyuni to do a tour of the salt plains of Bolivia. As usual our journey started off in style as we jammed our backpacks into a tiny fiat uno and headed off down the road, about 30 seconds later the boot popped and Jems backpack went rolling out into an oncoming car! Luckily the car managed to break in time otherwise the backpack could´ve caused some serious damage! Not detered we got the backpack back in and headed off to Uyuni on another long bus journey. We managed to finally book a tour once we managed to change some money - note to travellers, there are no ATMs in Uyuni so get money beforehand. Anyway we ... read more
