*Traveling has been hectic. All this actually happened 2-3 weeks ago, but enjoy nonetheless. This was another one of those entries with technical difficulties (to make a long story short), so unfortunately there won't be any pictures for this one. Sorry about that (just let your imagination go).* After the mesmerizing Salar de Uyuni, it was time to keep going. Two people from my tour group, one guy from Mexico and one girl from Chile, and I decided to continue on together to the town of Tupiza, southeast of Uyuni. We were scheduled to take an overnight train, my first use of non-bus transportation (not counting the boat ride on Lake Titicaca) on the whole trip. With luck I managed to get a ticket, with first-class being the only ones left. I groaned at the price, ... read more

Unfortunately, this is the concluding day of my Christmas vacation and it so far has been a blast travelling through southern Bolivia. I know can't wait until April to have more time to see more of the country. I would have to be at the Tarija airport at 3PM, so my time was kind of limited today. The night before we agreed to meet Ira in the main plaza at 10AM to head to the town of Tomatitas for a typical Tarijan lunch. Unfortunately, we never left the hostel until about 10:20AM and that is because Nadia was running behind schedule. She told me that I should have never let her take a shower as that always puts her behind schedule. As the three of us didn't have time for breakfast that morning, we took a ... read more

Before I went to bed the night before, it had started raining and sure enough when I woke up the next morning it was still raining. Today, my friend Nadia from La Paz was arriving in Tarija and I was thinking of going to the bus station to meet her but because of the torrential rain, I stayed in bed because I figured here bus would be very late due to the weather conditions. I was wrong! She called to wonder where I was staying so that she could meet me there and find a place to stay for the night as well. She brought two new friends with her that she met on the bus, both from Sucre. All three of them were able to find a place at the hostel, which was good, because ... read more

Wow! I can't believe that I got ten hours of sleep in on vacation. Collapsing at about 10:30PM the night before, my body most have needed some sleep. When do I ever go to bed that early? My plans for this day was to go to a small town north of Tarija called San Lorenzo to explore it and make my way out to a waterfall, which is suppose to be really nice to see. So after getting ready, I headed to the Mercado Central (central market) for a small breakfast of api and buñuelo, which is becoming one of my favorite things to eat while travelling. Eating in the market is always an interesting experience, as it is full of life and local people. Running into another tourist eating breakfast in the market is not ... read more

After a nightmare night from Tupiza to Tarija (Tar-e-ha), I arrived safely in the city of Tarija more than an hour behind schedule. I really didn't mind arriving late, because this means I ended up in Tarija at 6:45AM instead of 5:30AM, much easier to look for a hostel at this time than at 5:30AM when there is still little light. The first thing I did when I got off the off was to make sure that the other bus that my friends were on arrived safely. The bus was sitting at the bus terminal empty with no one on the bus so I guess they made it to Tarija fine. The windshield of the bus was broken and taped together, which I found out some time later was from the accident with the jeep the ... read more

********************* FUNNY THINGS ABOUT ARGENTINA/BOLIVIA -In Argentina, along with other South American countries, many if not most small intersections are without stop lights and stop signs. No wonder so many people have pictures of Jesus dangling from their rearview mirrors. -My patience has grown like hair here: slowly but always longer, although someone with a sharp enough edge can always cut it short -There are two levels of romantic relaitonships here: the first level is, as someone here in Tarija explained to me last night, is basically someone you kiss & hold hands with, but nothing more. Then you have, after some time, the normal girlfriend level. -They use, instead of brooms, giant leafy branches from trees to sweep the streets. It works better, in fact, and you can just throw away the broom when you ... read more

Thank the Good Lord for two wonderfully laid-back Peace Corps Bolivia Volunteers, Rebecca and Lauren. I was in southwest Bolivia with no plans for the Holidays. In order to make sure I didn't spend Christmas alone reading The DaVinci Code in some dark musty hostel, I invited myself to little Peace Corps Christmas party in Tarija, Bolivia. I didn't know Rebecca or Lauren, but I decided the PC bond would make up for any deficiences in our nonexistant relationship. They welcomed me warmly and even gave me the guest bedroom on the roof with wonderful view of the town. I made myself at home.....and then decided to stay for 8 days. Tarija has little to do for an itinerant gringo. It was perfect. I ate saltenas, drank coffee, and sat in the park. I had no ... read more

Odds and Sods Spanish Lessons As you heard from Simon our rather elegant elderly neighbours invited us around for a BBQ last weekend (called Asado here). What he forgot to tell you was that in our efforts to make converstation with them our misuse of Spanish nearly caused an international incident and contintues to be the source of much hilarity... Over dinner we asked our neighbours if they had heard the kiddies party that was going on in our street the night before. There were startled looks all round and we couldnt understand what was wrong. Luckily our neighbours (who dont speak English) had invited their friends around who do speak English - let me explain.. The Lonely Planet our Guidebook gives you the low down on colloquial Spanish for each country and in the Bolivia ... read more
