In Pursuit of a Party Hostel We had spent the majority of our time up until Santa Cruz in double rooms in small, family run hostels – or hospedajes as they’re called in South America – and so with a month in a remote animal sanctuary on the cards, we would have our last few days in a party hostel. The reason for steering clear of these up until that point was simply a financial one. Generally, to stay in a double room at a hospedaje would cost us around B$60 a night, whilst a party hostel with bar and high Gringo clientele would be something like B$50 each in a dorm. The decision really made itself. The only problem was that the hospedajes didn’t really lend themselves to having any real level of fun. Usually ... read more

Bolivias biggest region and city (when we don't count El Alto to La Paz) in the tropical area near to the amazon rainforest at the foot of the Cordillera Real mountains. The weather is really hot, often above fourty degrees in the summer (December to February) and with 100% humidity. When I visited the town, the weather was cloudy, the temperature a bit above thirty, but I was sweating always I walked more then few meters ;) The city itself is huge, but it is not amazing, the historical center is small with few nice buildings. It is divided into ten districts (rings) around the center. The more interesting is the possibility to visit nearby jungle (which I had no time for) and some of the Inca ruins which have been added to the Unesco cultural ... read more

Day 27-30-2nd-5th October We’d been told that there is not much to do in Santa Cruz and to be honest, this is true, however we had such an amazing time there. We were a little gutted when we woke up on the first morning, the grey clouds seemed to have followed us from Buenos Aires and we hoped it wouldn’t last. A quick check of the weather on the old internet reassured us that it was due to get better the next day so we spent the first day in Santa Cruz recovering from the bus journey. The Jodanga hostel does BBQ’s every other day and we decided to sign up for it that night. A Bargainous 55Bs (about 5 pounds) for all you can eat meat (I know!), salads, potatoes, yucca and the most important ... read more

Day 24, 25 and 26-29th, 30th September, 1st October These were 3 very quiet days for us, once again on the 29th it was raining and as I was still trying to shake off this cold we really didn’t do much. We’d originally planned to spend a lot longer in Argentina, however the rubbish weather and my illness meant we really were not enjoying ourselves. The fantastic thing about the way we are travelling is that if we are not liking a place, we simply move on, and this is what we decided to do. Our travel plans were completely changed while we were in Argentina. During this rainy period we’d heard about this wildlife reserve in Bolivia where you can go and volunteer for a minimum of 15 days and work with the animals and ... read more

Buenos Tardes!

We arrived in Santa Cruz and immediately began to peel off our layers of clothes. It was almost as hot as it was in Virginia when we left (mid 80s). We stayed for a little less than a week at my cousin's house. He has two kids, his daughter is a few years older than Angelica and his son is 6 months older than Thomas. It was a perfect match and each of them had a play mate. We spent a morning at the main Plaza and visited the San Lorenzo Cathedral there. The woodwork inside it was beautiful. There is a little museum inside it and off all the items it contained, the kids kept on talking about the world's smallest book of prayers that had the Lord's prayer in several different languages and was ... read more

On arrival in Santa Cruz the contrast with Sucre was immediately apparent: multi-lane traffic (always more than the road intended), an extremely busy nature and a VERY hot muggy atmosphere! We jumped in the first taxi.. no wing mirrors and a smashed front windscreen... and held on for the white knuckle ride to the hostel. Ambar backpackers hostel was one of the true bargains of our trip, 4 quid for a double room! Soph and I decided to have a quick lie down, and woke up 3 hours later! Despite being adjacent to the Primer Anillo, with horns beeping at least every second. Not a lot to see in Santa Cruz, and with the weather too hot to move, we spent the afternoon chilling in the plaza between pizza for lunch and a trip to the ... read more

The tally so far... hostels/hotels: 9 plane rides: 3 long haul bus trips: 6 long haul train rides: 1 dorm rooms shared with chronic snorers: 1 injuries: 1 rainy days: 3 weather under 30 degrees: 2 days So the Bolivian border was crowded and hot. We couldn't figure out which office to go to for our Brazilian exit stamp. Luckily we seem to meet exactly the right people to help us wherever we go, so we found some english speakers and figured it out. We knew the right words in Spanish but of course whatever question we asked they said 'si, si'... so we couldn't be sure if they were bullshitting or not. Luckily we only had to walk 100m to get to the Bolivian border. Getting through there was a breeze. Caught a taxi from ... read more

So for an hour and a half we have finally negotiated the dodgy USB, holding the wire at a particular angle seems to do the trick. Here are some pictures for u to view from New Zealand to Rio. We made it across the border from Brazil to Bolivia yesterday and spent the night on the death train as it is known. For 15 hrs we shook and bounced north to Santa Cruz. All i can think to describe it was like riding a wooden rollarcoaster. Luckily Carina was sitting next to a very fat, jabba the hut sized man, so instead of being bounced in to the arm rest like Russ, she had a nice soft cusion! But we are alive, the train didnt detrail, get hijacked etc and it was only 30mins late! What ... read more
