At 4070m Potosi is the highest city in the world; it also has been declared an UNESCO world heritage site since over 2000 colonial buildings have been catalogued there. The city is a maze of narrow paved streets which hide some exceptional 16th and 17th century colonial architecture. The source of the city’s wealth is Cerro Rico, a mountain that dominates the city and which contains vast deposits of silver. Since the state run mines were closed in the 80s, small groups of miners work as cooperatives to extract silver, zinc, tin and lead. Cerro Rico is one of the few working mines in the world where tourists are taken on guided tours; it was one hell of an experience. After being kitted up in overalls, wellingtons and a hard hat we stopped off at a ... read more

We got the overnight bus from Topzia 2 Potosi and arrived in potosi at 5 am to a bus station with the method of selling bus tickets is by just many vendors shouting out the destinations very loudly, not exactly great at 5am!!!! Potosi is the highest city in the world around about 4100 meters. Because it is so high you get out of breath really easy and feel very unfit. For example when we went to the local nightclub, after every dance everyone was out of breath and had to sit down!!! The reason for visiting potosi is to go down the mine called cero rico.(well wait for it,that is what I first thought) The hill/mountain is the mine of Cerro Rico which has been mined for like 500 years.rising above Potosi. It has been ... read more

Yes it´s slow, it´s fair to say this was probably our least favourite city so far! Maybe it´s unfair, maybe the altitude dampened our mood, maybe because we arrived on the weekend and almost everything was closed we felt the town had little to offer - or maybe it´s just plain old pants! Potosí for the record, is the highest city in the world ("self-proclaimed") at 3,967m. The town is dominated by the towering pink mountain called "Cerro Rico" (Rich Mountain) where the silver mining takes place. Potosí is certainly rich in history, it´s a mining town which boomed during colonial times when huge amounts of silver were found in the surrounding hills. At the time it was the richest city in the Americas and only London, Paris and Seville were more wealthy, on the world ... read more

Hola, I arrived in Potosi, Bolivia, a few nights ago and am glad that I did. The town is a great mix between typical (but never usual) Bolivian markets and narrow colonial streets packed with kids in uniforms trotting home after school or on their way to a bar. The first night was spent just walking around exploring the watering holes around the city with a new French friend whose name I have forgotten (c'est la vie quand tu... uh.... travel). After a day spent relaxing and playing soccer with some kids (who, although half my height and half my age, kicked my ass) I found a sociable hostel and had a short sleep before rising early to head to a tour of the local silver mine. First, a little history. Potosi, the world's highest city ... read more

As soon as we arrived in Uyuni, we couldn’t wait to leave…the place really had nothing going for it. So after 4days of being cramped in a jeep, we still considered another 6 hours by bus a good alternative to staying around this town. Finding all the buses fully booked till the morning, we did the only thing possible- we hired a private bus! Grabbe 10 peoploe in total, and organised our own way there. We had some locals even tryin to get out and offered to pay us 30bolivianos each to get on. Now this is the strange thing- driving through totally desolate landscapes lit up by moonlight, random people would be dropped off in the middle of nowhere…there was no house or path in sight…where are these people going…no doubt there is some alien ... read more

I left and Uyuni and took a bus to Potosi, which was about 6 hours away. This was how I imagined travelling in Bolivia to be. My backpack got strapped to the top and the passengers crammed into an old, beat up heap of metal. The gangways were filled with bags and extra passengers, who had been a sold a seat, as had everyone else. It was hot and dust filled our lungs for the entire trip. There was no toilet on board but luckily we stopped after about 3 hours. The only baño was what appeared to be a hole in someone's back yard. Back on the road we eventually arrived to Potosi, which is the highest city in the world at over 4,000m. I grew immediately fond of the place, with its narrow streets, ... read more

Arrived in Potosi at 1am after a very cold, cramped and stinky bus journey. Got a cab with 2 brits to the nearest hostel and was alseep in seconds. Awoken at 6am though to the city church bells, the government of bolivia should pay for everyone to have their own alarm clock!! Finally got up at 9 and decided to try and see all the sights in one day. Checked out had beakfast then wandered around town (very slowly as this is the higest town in Bolivia) until time for my mines trip. Boarded the truck at 12 with only one other passenger, a journalist. But saw my friend Simone in the street so she ran after us and came along too. We were given wellies, overalls and helmets and then started the rickety ride up ... read more

Und in was fuer Zeiten!

Despite travelling pretty much the length (north to south) of Bolivia in the last couple of weeks, we are neglecting to do blog entries for the cities of Cochabamba and Sucre... Basically these were ok cities to spend a day or 2 but we dont have many great photos or amusing stories so we are going to spare you the mundane details of the 2 generic cities! We left La Paz on the 14th April and headed 7hours south to Cochabamba, Bolivia´s second (or third depending on which book you read) city. Upon arrival at Coch (as well-seasoned travellers call it) we found an eerie scene of abandoned taxis and busses, which meant walking with the unnecessarily large bags to find a hotel at dusk. We later found out that it wasn´t armageddon, but of course ... read more
