Day 23 We arrived in Potosi midday and had a wander round. We are something like 3600 m above sea level so it's really hard to walk uphill as your heart is beating so fast due to the altitude! We had lunch and then went for a tour around the mint museum. Day 24 We were picked up in the morning for our trip to the mine. Basically Potosi is a mining town where the miners pay the government to work in the mine and whatever they find is theirs. The mine used to be rich in silver, but now it is other minerals they look for. We stopped off at the market to buy the miners some presents and headed to the mine. Firstly our tour guide showed us how the miners use dynamite to ... read more

Hi all, Wow! We´ve just done something today that will stay with us for a very long time. A visit to the co'operative mines just outside Potosi. Fascinating, scary, humbling and eye opening. More later.... So, we caught the overnight bus from La Paz to Potosi. A great experience mainly because it was so easy and comfortable. The bus ran on time, we had no problems, and each had a massive reclining seat. The only downer was having to sit through Rocky III in Spanish...but we both managed to doze through that... Potosi is brilliant. Its the highest city in the world, and its history is all about mining, the Spanish and silver. Legend has it that a native indian was caught up on the mountain one night, ánd noticed a shiny liquid within his fire. ... read more

Firstly, i would like to say, travelling is not always fun. Even when you have the magical company of Mr. Webb. Yesterday we finally completed the monstrous journey to Buenos Aires. We suffered 50 hours in the worst squashed seats at the back, with Rich sitting next to a baby, we endured flat tyres, running out of petrol, a 6 hour wait for a new gearbox, and endless bag searches. And all this a day after a previous 30 hour bus trip. nightmare. In fact in the last 8 nights we have spent 3 sleeping in a cold tent, 4 nights on a bus a one, yes ONE in a bed. But here we are in Buenos Aires, safe and sound and so nearly nearly back in the holy land of cider and caramel slices, but ... read more

So we left the big smoke of La Paz - after fighting our way through a local fuel protest at the edge of the city and went to Potosi. Potosi is famous for being the highest city in the world at 4070 m above sea level so needless to say we got the altitude sickness yet again. It´s hard to imagine it when you are there, but it was also once the richest city in the world - they mine silver there and once made the coins for the whole of Spain and South America. We passed on the opportunity to see the local mine where children still work, and you have to take gifts of dynamite which they then blow up for you! Instead we took a 2 hour taxi ride to Sucre which is ... read more

The next day, I got a bus to the town of Potosí. This was actually my first “proper” bus in Bolivia and I had been dreading it as I had heard so many tales of people getting robbed. I can understand why a dirt-poor Bolivian would see my stuff and want to rob me, but that doesn’t mean I don’t want it to happen! I’m travelling by myself so would be particularly stuffed if something did go missing. As my bag is too big for me to have it with me on the bus, I thought I’d experiment and buy a cloth shopping bag (like everyone uses round here), put into it the stuff that I could replace relatively easily if it got nicked into it, and put that on the roof of the bus. This ... read more

The German, the English couple, and I arrived in Potosi at 2 in the morning after a bus trip that rattled my daggs for 7 straight hours. By golly, it was certainly bumpy! Then some friendly local told us out hotel was only three blocks up the hill from where we were, so we decided against a taxi and started walking. Now, this is with my 30kg pack on, up hill, at 4200 meters above sea level. After 3 blocks I was exhausted. But our hotel isn´t here, but another 13 blocks up a hill as steep as the top part of Queen st (where the Oriental shops are), and I can tell you, I wanted to die by the time we arrived at our hotel, Hotel San Marcos. Saint Mark - not a bad name, ... read more

Well, I was going to take the train to Bolivia, to Uyuni, as it was something a little different to what every one else was doing, but everyone kept on recommending to go via the Salar, so I gave in and followed the pack. And I am quite glad I did. I had heard it was cheaper to go to Bolivia and organize a trip from there, but now only Bolivian companies work the route, so it´s the same either way. So I left early Tuesday morning with a crew called Estrella de Sur, for Bolivia. There was a German, Two Israelis, and two English in the same jeep, for which I got translation duties. The trip took three days and went through some of the most spectacular vistas that I have ever seen. We left ... read more

Well, I've seen a whole lot of llamas and cactus' since i last wrote... sorry it's been a while. I'll resume the update of my adventures just after Puerto Iguazu, where my fabulous idea of a stopover in Tucuman to avoid a late-night arrival in Salta, was not so fabulous. Tucuman was a bit of a 'hole'. The only redeeming feature being my chance to watch the crowning of 'Miss Independencia 2005'. A thoroughly amusing event thanks to the 'interesting' fashion the hopefuls were sporting. I made a pretty hasty exit from Tucuman and arrived in Salta 4 hours later. Salta was a nice place, with lots to see and do. I took a day-trip from there, around some incredible hills that were all the pretty colours of the rainbow, and then on to see some ... read more

Ok, so, weve missed our bus to Uyuni (the main town for visitng the saly lakes) but theres another one at 6pm so weve got the whole day to kill. After missing the bus we tried to arrange a collectivo to take us becasue the bus doesnt arrive at Uyuni until about 1am, which isnt the best plan. However after having had many locals laugh at my spanish I mangaged to find out that no taxis or collectivos would go to Uyuni because it is all blockaded!! How dare Bolivia have a revolution when I want to visit the Lakes! I asked again if the bus would be ok and the guy said that at that time of night the blockades should be open. So im sure it will be fine! The plan is to visit ... read more
