Feeling a little less than 100% after yet another bout of food poisoning. It´s raining out and there´s not a whole lot to do except read my Harry Potter book and update my Travelblog. Have finally gotten the official Death Road photos onto the computer. Ignore how bad I look - I was recuperating from my first dose of food poisoning at the time.... read more

Wow! What an amazing city tucked in the valley between snowcapped mountains! I landed in La Paz Sunday afternoon, a little worried how the 3600 odd meter altitude would affect me, especially after my night out in Santiago trying the specialty, Pisco Sour (The airport bus came to pick me up at 4am, so there was no use in sleeping... I did that on my baggage trolley at the airport waiting for customs!!)... I did, by the way, manage a pretty decent tourist whirl around Santiago on Saturday - made it up to Cerro San Cristobal for a view over la Paz (with a Maria statue similar to the Christ in Rio), munched on some seafood in the Central Market, and visited a couple of interesting museums... Back to La Paz. Galia´s parents met us (I ... read more

ah...to be back in a teeming city! la paz is the defacto capital of bolivia, located in the north western part of the country. it is home to about 1.5 million people, who all live at 3,660 m. in a big canyon, surrounded by the gorgeous bolivian cordilla real mountain range. the city sprawls the base and walls of the canyon and offers a busy, lively, daily pulse of traffic, people, and markets. not a place for those in fear of over stimulation. you can find just about anything and everything on the streets, being sold by the "duenas" (bolivian women) dressed in traditional clothing that consists of colorful, robust skirts and sweaters, with big embroidered shawls and little top hats. typically, their hair will be braided in two long braids that stream down their backs ... read more

{NOTE: The pictures marked with (*) are courtesy of Gravity Bolivia. Some of them were not taken on the day we rode, but the guys kindly included them on our ride's CD for our enjoyment - and they help illustrate rather well some of the things we talk about!} **************************** Arriving in La Paz we took a taxi from the airport and asked the taxi driver if he could recommend a cheap hotel for us. The place he took us to seemed at first glance to be rather expensive, but our now tried and trusted "Oh, errrrm, do you have any cheaper rooms?" managed to cut the price by more than 50%! For anyone other travellers reading this, we'd really recommend trying this, as we've often noticed that after being shown a room and using “the ... read more

Hola boys and girls, I´m back in La Paz, I guess I´m just a glutton for high-altitutde punishment. Altitude sickness really is the pits, especially after 3 weeks, when it normally should disappear in as many days... anyway, I soldier on to new lands and new scenes. This weekend was my Lake Titicaca long weekend, and it was one of the best side trips I have ever taken in my life! Here´s how it all came about.. JUEVES (THURSDAY) - left my hostal with a reservation for Sunday night, getting on the bus at the La Paz cemetery to Copacabana (p.s. it´s not the hottest spot north of Havana, they were definitely talking about somewhere else in that song). Checked out the local church, didn´t get to see the local virgin statue (apparently pretty famous). She ... read more
