After all that hard trekking Angus and I decided to see some of the country by car. We did a four day road trip in NorthWest Argentina, starting in Tucumen and heading further North towards Salta. It turned out to be a great way to explore a beautiful area, and we met some other travellers doing the same. The first day we drove up high on a mountain road through hot tropical rain forest. After the desert landscape of San Juan, it was a refreshing change of scenery. The trees went very high and there were hundreds of different species of butterflies. We visited the ruins of Quilmes. These are 1000 years old, where the native Quilmes people lived and defended themselves from the Incas and then the Spanish. The museum was full of pots and ... read more

My 31st birthday started somewhat slowly, following the early birthday celebrations the previous night. Several coffee injections and staring at email for an hour was required to get the old brain in gear again before venturing into the city. Unfortunately, this being Argentina, it was siesta time and everything was shut. This strikes me as somewhat mad for a country where it's considered perfectly normal to think about geing out for dinner around 10pm but often not commence eating until midnight, then pass the next 3-6 hours in bars or clubs. Surely it would make more sense to open everything throughout the day, so when you finally wake up, the shops are actually open, not just about to close until 5pm? But maybe that just shows that I need to spend more time here to fully ... read more

Leaving Asuncion in Paraguay we are headed for Salta in northern Argentina. A midmorning bus from Asuncion and another lengthy border crossing (made worse by immigration officials trying to get me off the bus and alone to coerce me into paying them a tip for stamping our passports, us being the only gringos on the bus and Paraguay being bribe hungry), followed by another luggage search five miles into Argentina, gets us to Resistencia, where Claire runs to get us onto the bus to Salta that should have left 5 minutes before. This she does and we get straight onto the overnight bus, pleased with ourselves at having made the connection and not having to stay in Resistencia, but realizing another night bus lies ahead without a gap to wash our faces or eat dinner. Hi friends and family No photos today because the computer is too slow. Not much to take photos of anyway on my 27 hr bus ride to Salta through a heavy rainstorm. Lts of thunder and lightening was fun. Of course the bus was delayed until 2 am but fortunately everything is still open here at that time. Another traveller already had a hostel booked and they managed to squeeze me in too. About to head out to the bus station to find out how Im getting to Bolivia. Hopefully through San Pedro in Chile but there may be delays. I visited Paraguay yesterday (well, before the bus ride, whatever day that was) and saw the largest hydroelectric dam in the world at Itaipu. A really rushed day but I travelled across 4 borders to get ... read more

I´m in Salta, in northern Argentina. When we last spoke, I was in San Pedro de Atacama, near the Bolivian border in Chile. The town is super touristy, and thus super expensive... Ten dollar meals, ten dollar rooms... (boo.) I met some Icelandic chicks, we went sand boarding. It was fun, but the sand burnt my feet... (ouch.) They are semi-famous in Iceland, which I guess isn´t that hard, because there are only 300,000 people. Anyway, they have a website that is sponsored by a TV channel, if enough people visit they can get their own show. That´s pretty cool. If you go to www.sirkus.tv and click on pictures of girls that says ¨sudamerica¨there are some pictures of me there too. Me and the Icelandic chicks planned on taking an 18 wheel truck from Chile to ... read more

English Our south-American trip is getting into its more difficult part, we have left the easy-going and almost-European Argentina and crossed the border to Bolivia, from where we are writing now. Hence, this blog is meant to be a farewell message to the Argentineans and the Chileans and their wonderful countries. We still have to digest the overwhelming load of experiences we are taking with us after a month and a half. Astonishingly different landscapes have passed in front of our eyes, from the emptiness of Patagonia to the dried altopianos of the north. We have met a multitude of people from everywhere, some really exceptional, some others not. Among the last group, if by chance we find those bastards which stole Chiara's wallet in Mendoza... On the return journey from Iruya and on our way to Purmamarca, we passed by what is known as "The Painter's Palette". We could only take a semi-decent picture of this, not easy from a moving vehicle, but the bus didn't stop here. We stayed just the one night in Purmamarca to see "The Mountain of 7 Colours" in the morning, a unique rock formation where many different layers have been exposed by the forces of nature. This colourful mountain really is stunning to see, one can't stop looking at it and taking pictures, it looks almost impossible that nature could have created it so beautiful and harmonious. The stopover in Purmamarca also helped to break up a long bumpy road journey from Iruya to Salta, where we headed to next. The main reason why we ... read more

Arrived by bus from Mendoza on or about Feb 8 on a warm day. Salta scenery looks dry, stark, but it rained nearly the entire time I was there. No longer charmed by colonial architecture, especially in the funk of bad weather, I decided to book excursions for each day I was there. I thought I'd be able to do mountain biking in Salta, but they weren't really pushing them. Instead, I first did the southern scenery, van-ride tour, culminating in a bodega stop (winery) for tasting. Sure the scenery was lovely in its colorful, desert way, but I was not so into it. I did talk to some nice girls- one was only 18 and traveling as I was, but she had a decidedly different bend towards all she did and saw. The other was ... read more

A long journey from Potosi and across the border, which was a much smoother crossing than Peru to Bolivia, and we were in Argentina. Immediately the roads are better, only 5% of the roads in Bolivia are tarmaced. We also started to come down in altitude, the first time in a few weeks. As the drive to Salta ( our destination ) was so long, we camped overnight at a secluded campsite, where we were under the stars, and treated to another spectacular lightning storm, even on a clear night!!! We packed up, the next morning at 8am and set off again, to complete our journey to Salta. By now we had noticed a huge change in the weather, warmer, as we were now at a sensible altitude of 1100 meters. Again we were camping, so ... read more
