We have just been to the rugby match between the Pumas and Italia, which we found out was happening because a local thought we might be rugby players! Only 16 peso´s for "preferrential" grandstand. The game wasn´t too exciting but the crowd are pretty passionate about the game....awesome atmosphere-just needed some cowbells to ring! The town is in fiesta mood tonite. Went to the top of the hill for a view over Salta city and the Lerma Valley. A gondola goes up but we opted to walk the 1070 steps instead. The view was magnificient although a little hazy for good photo´s. The city is dwarfed by the surrounding mountain´s which have snow on the peaks. It is 1200m above sea level here and a little colder than what we´ve just come from. At the top ... read more

- FOOD: More empañadas, good Italian food - AREA: Old colonial house hostal with cute puppy (why didn't I come here before?); wobbly cable car to top of mountain with lots to do and see; De Boca en Boca world music band live. - PEOPLE: Friendly dog who did not want me to leave - WEATHER: Same as before Sat 4th: This time it was the younger woman's turn to talk incessantly about the shower. Escaped without having one (far too much hassle) and got greeted by the friendly dog who kept following me around yesterday. He was quite protective of me and barked at anyone who came near me but then when I tried to get on the bus back to Salta, he grabbed my leg and wouldn't let go! Back in Salta I was ... read more

- FOOD: Banana licuado (had forgotten about this Argentinian joy), food loaded with salt (had forgotten about this Argentinian obsession), lovely wine and cheese, more lovely wine, wine flavoured ice cream (that I didn't get to try) - AREA: Nice, small little town with hardly anyone around - just what I like; nicer than HI hostal with rooms around an orange tree courtyard; relaxing long walk to the Finca Las Nubes bodega (one of many) - PEOPLE: Crazy hostal woman obsessed with showers - WEATHER: More sun Thurs 2nd: I escaped the hell hole as soon as poss and recovered in the plaza, soaking up the sun. I decided at this point not to do the Inca trail or the East coast of Oz as both will be packed with people I´d rather avoid and I ... read more

- FOOD: Media lunas again but smothered in sugar, NO dulce de leche, intestines (they were as I thought they would be), empañadas again. - AREA: Big sunny plaza with lots of cafes to watch the world go by - very European, LOTS of choice of tour companies, quite a big city with lots of traffic - not what I've been used to recently! ANOTHER cathedral and church. Crap park. - PEOPLE: Hostels sellers who hassle you to hell, stereotypical backpackers that irritated me (see rant below). - WEATHER: Hot sun to while away the hours in. Wed 1st June: I slept SO well in my palace but wasn´t impressed with the measly breakfast I got for my 16 pounds. Media lunas (hooray) but covered in sugar (boo). Forgot about Argentina's sugar obsession. No dulce de ... read more

Saludos a todos, We woke up about an hour and a half before the sun to take a fifteen hour train ride that ends in the same place it begins. Are we mad? Probably not. One would think we would be sick of sitting all day long on buses and trains, but we wanted to go on the Train to the Clouds. El Tren a las Nubes is a tourist attraction that runs from Salta on the eastern side of the Andes at about 1200 m (4000 ft) to the Viaducto La Polvorilla in the Puna, climbing to 4,220 m (13,776 ft) in the process. At the beginning of the 20th Century, the northern provinces of Argentina were relatively isolated from the outside world. They petitioned the government in Buenos Aires to help them establish a ... read more

Hola a todos! We followed our visit to the falls at Iguazú with a visit to another town in Misiones Province, San Ignacio Miní. San Ignacio Miní has some of the best preserved ruins of the Jesuit missions in South America. The ruins here and in three nearby towns have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Admission tickets are good for a period of 15 days, allowing for one visit to each mission with guided tour. The Jesuits set up some 30 missions in what was the Virreinato de Paraguay, covering parts of modern day Paraguay, Argentina, and Brazil. These missions were abandoned for about two hundred years from the expulsion of the Jesuits to their rediscovery in the mid-1900´s. According to our guide, the purpose of the settlements was for the Jesuits to learn ... read more
