(second part of truck tour in Patagonia finishing 23rd January) Bariloche After the Fitzroy National Park and the cute El Chalten, the 33 passengers and I made a straight run up towards civilization (meaning towns accessible by betumen roads), stopping briefly in the small town of Perino Moreno. Yes, the name is common here (ie. the glacier near El Calafate) due to the generosity of this explorer who donated the land given to him for good deeds to the region, and thus allowed many natural areas to become protected. Luckily, along some natural parks, the history of Natives has somehow survived too. The Natives in these Northen regions of Patagonia are called ´Tehuelche´. They had a strong oral history which was recorded along with their cute legends. There is one telling how all the animals were ... read more

Hello Just a quick one about the Cerro Catedral, its 2000 metres above sea level, and from the top you can see for miles and miles, stunning views and very tranquil. In the winter it is a ski resort, so has lots of ski lifts etc. So, as the temperature soared at sea level, to nearly 30°C, we hopped on an aerosilla and went to the top of the mountain! We had loads of fun in the snow. I havent seen snow up close for ages, so it was great. We went sledging, built a snowman and an igloo. As you can see in the photos! Had my last night with my family on sat night to say goodbye to everyone, Lo was invited too - which was lovely. Daniel made a BBQ and Patricia made ... read more

After the last thrilling visit to the barber I know you’ve been hanging out waiting for my locks to lengthen anew….today was the day. I nearly didn’t make it as I had a small session in the wonderfully decrepit bar of the museum hotel. I’m writing from the bar this evening, the music is astonishing, some v cool jazz from I don’t know where, but the lighting is extremely low and moody. Several antique chandeliers have small coloured globes, the antique cash register has a little strip light, just enough to see your money. Mostly its dark! Late in the night, after several cervezas I ventured out to the back room and the bano…out the back is the big, cluttered, ‘disco’, haven’t seen it fired up yet but live in hope!..anyway, its pitch black back there, ... read more

Hola Hope you are all well. I am in love with Bareloche and I dont want to leave. It is stunning, very green with loads snow capped mountains and amazing lakes - that must be why its called The Lake District of Argentina. The buildings are very pretty, made mostly of wood, just like in the Alps. In the winter it is a ski resort. We have been up to the Cerra Otto (which is just outside my house) on the ski lift and had dinner in the revolving restaurant, was brill. We have also done lots of partying as there are lots of bars etc and its busy with tourists. It is a lot cooler here and has lots of rain! It is very unpredicatable and the other day it was 28C and sunny in ... read more

Hi guys, Here´s what James and I got up to... Day 1 - The first day saw about 8 seasons in one day, ranging from sunshine, to sleet, a bit of rain, snow, the odd blizzard, some bitter, bitter wind and a rainbow for good measure!! We reached the end of the day´s walking, a place called Refugio Frey, located on a very scenic, but pretty much unsheltered glacial lake. The biting wind and snow storm that greeted us soon meant that me and James were scurrying half an hour back down the trail to a forest camping site that was mercifully sheltered from the wind. The first night was a bit hairy as I discovered that my sleeping bag was rated at +16 C for comfort (i.e. only comfortable indoors!!!) and only down to +1 ... read more

After our long illnesses which put our schedule back by about 3 weeks, we (at last!) set out to start exploring the Argentinian Lake District. This is actually shared with Chile, as it sits on both sides of the border, and wherever you go along its 210 mile stretch you'll be presented with absolutely stunning scenery - mountains, forests, rivers, snow-capped volcanoes, colourful villages, and, surprise, surprise, lots and lots of lakes. The region is normally referred to as if there were two separate ones, i.e. the "Northern" and "Southern" Lakes. The Southern Lakes are those in and around the Glaciers N.P. (remember this page? ). The ones around and north of Bariloche are the Northern Lakes. The city's full name is San Carlos de Bariloche, derived from "Vuriloche", which was one of the tribes that ... read more

Yep it seems my ability to sit still, read, listen to music and watch some of an incredibly bad romantic comic starring Paul Nichols (yep, that guy who was on Eastenders once and covered his bedroom in tin foil or something!!) reached new levels as i´ve just stepped off an 18 hour bus journey feeling almost refreshed!! Currently we're in Bariloche, which is the aforementioned 18 hour bus ride South-West of the capital Buenos Aires, near to the Chilean border in an area called the Lake District. The area is beautiful: Bariloche is situated on a vividly blue lake and surrounded by snow-capped mountains. It is, however, also rather nippy - especially when the wind gets up. But it does give me an excuse to bring out the fleeces, scarves and gloves that have until this ... read more
