The drive to Broome was 1049km and was going to take 10 hours. Now normally I would not attempt to drive such a great distance. Unfortunately I had no choice as there was nowhere to stop along the way. There are two towns between Kununarra and Broome; Halls Creek and Fitzroy Crossing. They are both aboriginal towns and several different people all gave me exactly the same advice of don’t stop. Now I have to stop for petrol but was told to lock the car as soon as I got out of it and be as quick as possible. Halls Creek has been re-named by locals as Hells Crack. This is the only town in Australia that when the Greyhound bus pulls in it is met by an armed guard. With all this is mind I ... read more

.....that is I have two t-shirts, one to prove that I did a sky dive, and one to prove that I did a bungee jump! New Zealand is a fantastic place, everything I expected it to be and more. Fortunately, the pound is very strong out there, unfortunately, this means that all of the activities are reasonabley priced, which means you end up doing it, which means you end up spending a fortune! It's worth it though, and even in the middle of wintertime I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone. I arrived on 20th May, after cutting down my Fiji trip to two weeks. Most people I had met in Fiji had warned me that New Zealand was "freezing", but after six months of a rocky mountain winter-time, stepping off the plane at Auckland was ... read more

Today we went to the most beautiful Kalbarri National park where Sandy (the driver) took us on a hair raising ride down a very bumpy dirt track, we climbed down the gorge (all european anal health and safety requrements out of the window!), we abseiled and swam in the gorge. Nature's window was by far the most beautiful event of my trip, absolutely stunning. We raced an emu along the road for a bit and held a baby one at a road house on the way. We also vistited the Stramatolites - the reason we are all here, again beautiful. Then we arrived in the infamous Denham! Its funny how you can be sitting in a hot tub in a remote part of the world and come across someone you went to school with over 10 ... read more

You guessed it - it was an early start out of Townsville. We had a lot of outback kilometres to cover so we needed to get going. We were quickly free of the city and on our way to Charters Towers - an old gold mining town about 160km (100 miles) west. We were cracking along, about half way there in fact when I suddenly noticed I wasn’t wearing my wedding ring. Panic set in and Lins desperately tried to get me to calm down and stop swearing long enough to find out what the problem was. I thought fast where did I have it last - when I did the washing up in the camp kitchen and I took it off and put it next to the sink. Another set of expletives as I begged ... read more

We drove over to Queenstown, hitting a couple of vineyards on the way for a couple of tastings. We went up Coronet Peak where Caleb had his first skiing lesson and I had a much-needed refresher lesson. My instructor ended up taking us over this bumpy bit to do little jumps which was a bit too much excitement for me. I took Caleb up a bigger run than his classes had been doing which resulted in the end of my career prospects as a ski instructor. The next day we went up The Remarkables on opening day for another ski which was great. Fantastic weather and a nice relaxing trip (apart from the sore legs).... read more

So....finally the moment we'd been waiting for...the arrival of the Hawgood parents!!! We had an amazing and fabulous 10 days with them but it all feels so long ago now! Before they arrived, it was all feeling completely surreal but exciting at the same time. We had arrived in Townsville on the Monday (12th June) and had spent a couple of days 'milling' around and exploring Townsville. On the Wednesday morning we moved from our Hostel, round the corner, to a hotel (going up in the world now the folks were coming!!!) Yvonne and Alan arrived at the hotel at lunchtime. It was so bizarre that they were actually here in Australia! A friend of the family - John - lives in Townsville, so he had picked them up from the airport. After an emotional "hello" ... read more

While I was making my way from Adelaide to Alice Springs, I met a Brit who told me about a joey rescue center in Alice where you got to hold baby kangaroos. This guy's voice and face changed as he described his visit, kind of like a little girl face's when she's holding a kitten. I had very limited time in Alice Springs but the rescue center became a priority. I got there in the evening after the center closed, left the next day for a three day camping trip, and flew back to Sydney around 11 A.M. the moring after I got back to Alice from the camping trip. I figured I had about an hour for the joeys befor I had to get a cab to the airport. I got to the center about ... read more

Got the ferry from Wellington to Picton and then boarded the bus again for the journey south. Wellington was nice, but wet. Busy few days, when Team Handsome became proud Scottish warriors dressed in bin liners at the Poo Pub fancy dress night. We also had a full day hike on the amazing Franz Josef glacier - has to be seen to be fully appreciated.... read more

To be a successful farmer--and by that i mean, to be a farmer who doesn't go mad and throw himself in front of a tractor or play hide-and-seek with his cows--you have to possess a fantastical, and often cynical sense of humor. the fire will burn where you don't want it to and will completely avoid the dead tree you've been trying to burn out for the past week. when it finally does burn out, the dead tree will do exactly what you've been trying to get it to do for days; it will fall over...right on top of the fence. the frost will kill all your plants but won't harm a solitary leaf on a single weed, a weed that is also killing your plants. the cows will be unwilling to move to a fresh ... read more

My time in Sydney is quickly coming to an end. I leave on Monday 26.06 to head to Bangkok. My last few weeks in Australia have been a great finale. I enjoyed my jobs (though I also enjoyed the few free days I've had this last week!), I made some great friends, and all in all....I've definitely become quite fond of Sydney. I think it's fair to say that my perspective on Australia has changed a massive amount during my 7 month stay. I remember when I first landed in Sydney and had absolutely no clue what I was getting myself into...well what I ended up finding out was that Australia is full of fantastic places and people. The landscape is gorgeous...my top locations were 1. the view of Bondi Beach the first time the car ... read more
