Having fully completed our road trip in Albany we headed back to the Perth area to reluctantly hand back our motor, then went for a few nights in Fremantle, so called Freo by the locals. Fremantle is only a few miles from Perth but it has completely different atmosphere and character. Staying in a less than perfect, dirty, overcrowded but lively backpackers called Pirates we had three nights in freo just to do nowt after our tours. It is one of the few towns in Oz that has a bit of extra character to it, a problem with such a new country. Freo consists of loads of brew pubs, cafes, markets and shops and is set right on the mouth of the Swan river on the fishing harbour, good fish and chips. Having got bored of ... read more

The night before we left Airlie Beach it absolutely chundered it down, as you can imagine we didn’t get much sleep with the rain bouncing off our van. The rain went on all night causing our van roof to leak. We had to use tea towels to soak up the rain coming in through the side window. It was slightly annoying that we didn’t get much sleep as we had a really long drive the next day. We set off from Airlie Beach at around 8.45am and headed back onto the A1, the Bruce Highway. We stopped twice for toilet breaks and for food but we were almost driving for a solid 11 hours and covered between 800-900 kilometres. The drive went relatively quick with no problems along the way. We arrived in Hervey Bay just ... read more

This place is just about partying and adrenaline sports. I wasn't going to do much here as skydiving was what I came here for. Also I had done many of ther activites in South Africa a few years back which were a lot more extreme and also a lot cheaper. However I got bored so I signed up for all 3 bungy's sites. One of them was the Nevis which was 134m jumping off a cable car. Its currently the biggest in the world but I did the 218m jump in South Africa 4 years ago. Its close now due to a death and safety issues which is a worry but hey what the hell. Loved the jump and I'm actually going to do another in 1 hour strapped to my waist instead of my feet ... read more

Moving on from Hervey Bay to Bundaberg, I was booked on the 13:10 greyhound bus and arrived at 2:25 a short journey for a change. The hostel called feeding grounds was recommended by Sheryl at the friendly, had rung them and booked in for 2 nights. The courtesy bus picked me up from the bus station an on arrival Rod advised there are 7 guests tonight so everyone has a dorm to themselves unless travelling with others. When I rang the hostel to book they asked if I wanted to do the two main trips which are the footprints turtle tour and the Bundaberg rum tour so said yes as the rum tour was the main reason for stopping in here. The turtle tour left the hostel at 6pm and we were advised we may be ... read more

So I did it, I actually left Sydney! It was sad saying good-bye to the city and to my best mate Nadine, but we vowed to see each other again. I’ll definitely cherish the friendship and hope to see her again some time soon. I did the Harbor Bridgeclimb….sort of. We started going across the bridge and then up loads of ladders which was a little scary. With my knees knocking together, I was able to muster step after step up to the first arch where the climb got easier (wider area and solid flooring). My group got up about ½ way on the first arch and we got called back down due to a lightning storm to the west of us that was headed our way. We waited for a while but unfortunately the climb ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Taupo January 22nd 2007

We got into Taupo pretty late on the 20th, and then couldn't find our hostel for the longest time. We also found out the that the Indy 500 of NZ was here in Taupo this weekend. There were people everywhere. I was pretty exhausted that night, so as soon as we got into the hostel, I was in a bed. Taupo itself is a really cool city; it's on Lake Taupo (it's huge) and on the right is green rolling hills, to the left are high cliffs, and across are mountains. It's quite the view. Our hostel is actually really cool with big, open commons areas with huge windows and sliding doors, overlooking the lake. I'm a fan. We've been here for a few days, both of which have been pretty much free days. Yesterday we ... read more

I had two days off from work at the restaurant in Takaka this past week and was able to put together a two day backpacking trip to Abel Tasman National Park with my friend Jennie. The track weaves in and out of beaches and bays for about 5 days worth of walking (if you do pretty short days and lots of beach lounging) but we took a water taxi part way up the track and then hiked 4 hours the first day and 8 hours the second day and I felt like we pretty much saw the whole thing. We stayed in a hut so we didnt have to carry a tent and opted for a cold dinner instead of having to carry a stove and a pot so I was happy with my light weight ... read more
