Memories of visiting St Hilda in the Woods Church at Ngamatapouri many decades ago convinced me I should travel over New Zealand's longest no-exit road to see it again. After turning off at Waitotara, onto the Waitotara Valley Road, we came across a sign warning us of wandering stock. The sign is there for a good reason. We had to dodge stock and wild goats all the way. The road roughly follows the Waitotara River and is sealed until you reach Ngamatapouri. We worked out we needed to keep going for another few kilometres in order to find the church. Seeing the church again was lovely. I remembered how beautiful it is inside. However, like churches all over NZ, it was locked and we couldn't find any contact details so were unable to find anyone to ... read more

Yes we will go, no we won't go, but after much discussion, yes we will go. So, we are off to join our niece Alex and her fiancé Kev on their wedding day in Corsham, England. So looking forward to it. The reason for all the indecision about going was the fact that we have had a wonderful 2023 so far and have enjoyed seeing the large majority off Diane's family in January and then having the great pleasure in having Chris and his family come to join us from Norway for a few weeks, Easter included. Di's seven sisters and brothers arrived from all over, England, Australia and New Zealand. A good number of nieces and nephews came as well. A great catch up with everyone, being the first time for many years that the ... read more

In the middle of the beautiful Manaia Golf Course is the historic Manaia Redoubt that was built in the 1880s. It consists of a lookout tower, which is a 1912 replica of the original tower that blew over in a storm, and two blockhouses. The redoubt is surrounded by trenches which are not easy to climb in and out of if you are unfit or it has been raining. If you have an interest in NZ history, it is worth taking the risk of being hit by a golf ball as you run across the fairway to reach the redoubt. It isn't very interesting but you can grab a few photos and then head into town to Yarrows (The Bakers) and grab some very yummy, very cheap treats. Munzees: there are plenty of Munzees to capture ... read more

Just a short distance from the main road at Pihama lies the Lizzie Bell Memorial Cemetery. It is worth a quick visit if you have an interest in NZ maritime history. The Lizzie Bell was an iron barque that struck a rock, causing its 18 officers and crew to abandon ship. In the cemetery is a memorial for those who didn't survive. There is a toilet available but be warned that the door sticks when the weather is wet. The curtain at the window made me laugh. https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/NZH19010816.2.70.17 url=https://www.stuff.co.nz/taranaki-daily-news/news/114523571/solving-the-mystery-of-shipwrecked-lizzie-bell-and-its-bellhttps://www.stuff.co.nz/taranaki-daily-news/news/114523571/solving-the-mystery-of-shipwrecked-lizzie-bell-and-its-bell... read more

A camping we will go, A camping we will go, High Ho the Derry-O, A camping we will go! And what a place to do so! Great roads, abundant camp spots, friendly humor loving locals, ease of English language, and jaw dropping beauty! New Zealand is a place to get out and explore, marvel at nature, and challenge yourself to anything from hiking, to biking to paragliding and so much more. In our way too short, 3 week campervan trek from north to south across the country, we managed to rack up a whole slew of notables. There were: Over 1600 miles driven, countless round-abouts, at least 27 never seen before bird species, 25 gorgeous trails hiked, 16 different camp spots, 15 modes of transportation utilized, more than 10 swinging bridges crossed, 5 summits climbed, and ... read more

Oamaru to Nelson and homeward bound Our hotel in Oamaru turned out to be a lovely Victorian white stone building that echoed the town’s historical importance. We sat in 2 leather high-backed winged chairs by the fire and felt very grand. Oamaru was an important port in days of yore and was the centre of the world’s provision of frozen lamb….until the railway made the journey to Picton and then Wellington shorter than by sea and the importance of Oamaru dwindled. It's now deemed to be the home of steampunk and we have yet to discover what that actually means. Quite a lot of odd murals and statues and figures dressed in black, but we’re still none the wiser. We travelled northwards along the pacific road to Christchurch, where we visited the botanic gardens and revisited ... read more

Day 5 and 6 of the Alps to Ocean and the art of river crossings…. It is now the end of Day 5, and with only 61km to push tomorrow to the South Pacific Ocean, I am beginning to think we might make it! It's been another long day and the first time we have had to cycle through rivers. I had never really acknowledged that this might be a “thing”....i.e. a real thing that we might be expected to do. But there was the river and we were on the wrong side. Pete reckoned (for the very first time in his life) that slow and steady was the answer...low gear, moderate pedalling with a burst at the end to get you up the bank. We debated the option of hurling ourselves down the bank at ... read more

Back to Queenstown and onto our final adventure of the trip Our first foray into Queenstown was brief and very loud. Unfortunately we had to return in order to catch the bus to Tekapo. We decided to try another hostel (after our St Patrick’s day experience of Nomads) and for some reason that Jan cannot explain, we ended up in a hostel called Jucy Snooze, which had all the disadvantages of Nomads but multiplied by 10. It was a truly horrible place...a kitchen the size of a cubicle, with nowhere to sit and eat and very little space to cook. A “chill out room” 4 floors above, that was absolutely freezing and was set up for a drinking game that we didn’t want to play. Our room was right by a fire door that banged shut ... read more

September 1982: Patea was a busy little town. There were two doctors, two pharmacies, a post office and telephone exchange, County Council and Borough Councils, a town hall, banks and shops. That changed overnight when the freezing works closed. Almost everything closed, never to reopen. It is hard to believe 40 years have passed. Attending the event outside the gates to where the Works used to be was emotional for the large crowd that turned out in the rain. Memories were shared, the information board and plaque were unveiled and photos were taken. I will let this report fill you in on all the details url=https://www.rnz.co.nz/national/programmes/morningreport/audio/2018857153/patea-marks-40th-anniversay-of-freezing-works-closurehttps://www.rnz.co.nz/national/programmes/morningreport/audio/2018857153/patea-marks-40th-anniversay-of-freezing-works-closure The highlight of t... read more

Geocaching takes us to so many places we wouldn't have normally bothered to visit or even known existed. https://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GC8D8PZ_bunker-down-whanganui This one took us past Whanganui Airport, along a dirt road which was more potholes than road. It made me wish we were in a 4WD and not my car that is very low to the ground. But the drive was worth it as the cache was placed by one of my favourite geocachers and it was my favourite kind - an easy one to find! It make a change from having to admit so many DNFs. This one has the added benefit of providing a great photo op. The bunker sits right beside the Whanganui River and the views are great.... read more
