Background: The Polynesian Maori reached New Zealand in about A.D. 800. In 1840, their chieftains entered into a compact with Britain, the Treaty of Waitangi, in which they ceded sovereignty to Queen Victoria while retaining territorial rights. In that same year, the British began the first organized colonial settlement. A series of land wars between 1843 and 1872 ended with the defeat of the native peoples. The British colony of New Zealand became an independent dominion in 1907 and supported the UK militarily in both World Wars. New Zealand's full participation in a number of defense alliances lapsed by the 1980s. In recent years, the government has sought to address longstanding Maori grievances.

After a short 3 hour flight we landed in Auckland to find our hostel double booked, excellent news. We were the unfortunate ones and had to move for one night to a different hostel down the road which can only be described as… crap. Hey! So we took our first Kiwi Experience bus yesterday (Thursday). Tuesday, November 17th We woke to a beautiful morning in the peaceful country side. Ferdi went to feed the chickens and in return they kindly left us two eggs. We made tea and enjoyed Talita’s rusks while sitting on the veranda. What a way to live! We feel right at home here. I met up with Yvonne and Julia (two girls I worked with in Picton) and we did a bit of shopping before Julia decided that she wanted to get her ears pierced. A Very Swiss Evening in Gisborne and Adventures in the Coromandel Region Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Coromandel » Hahei

SURFING IN GISBORNE I went to check out the beach (16th Nov) and it was indeed pretty flat. Probably just about surf-able though so I decided I'd play some guitar by the beach, then stock up on supplies in the supermarket and then head back down in the evening with a board and wetsuit. My first impressions of Gisborne hadn't been spectatular, it was a bit too full of kids driving in squares in souped up cars for my liking. It's been so long since I wrote something, I am just going to give a short description of what we have been doing these past few days...car still working (it's a miracle).
