Background: The Polynesian Maori reached New Zealand in about A.D. 800. In 1840, their chieftains entered into a compact with Britain, the Treaty of Waitangi, in which they ceded sovereignty to Queen Victoria while retaining territorial rights. In that same year, the British began the first organized colonial settlement. A series of land wars between 1843 and 1872 ended with the defeat of the native peoples. The British colony of New Zealand became an independent dominion in 1907 and supported the UK militarily in both World Wars. New Zealand's full participation in a number of defense alliances lapsed by the 1980s. In recent years, the government has sought to address longstanding Maori grievances.

Falls in Wentworth Valley.
Uh, The New Zealand version of Wentworth Valley.
Did you know that they only have roll-on deodorant in New Zealand? I have been searching for a regular stick for over a week now and have found nothing. I finally caved and bought some roll-on this week but I am not happy about it. LA and I spent the last 5 days in a Tourist/Surf town called Whangamata that is located on the Cormandel Peninsula on the East Coast of NZ. We had spent a couple days in Auckland last weekend(which is a massive and pretty cool city by the way) before heading down the Coast. We had plans of [View Full Entry]

Crazed Rugby Fans
We went to the rugby match with a group of Aaron's coworkers. Some of them painted their faces in our team's colors.
You know how, for the most part, you’d rather be travelling? Same with us. Yes, our entire New Zealand experience counts as travelling - but really, we like it best when we are sleeping somewhere other than our own bed. Not to say that we haven’t had some fun in our hometown lately. We’ve done some distinctly NZ things here and really enjoyed them. First, the rugby game. We knew we didn’t want to let our time here go by without catching a rugby match, and we ended up going to one with a big group from the hospital. Rugby is [View Full Entry]

Waitomo Caves
Waitomo Caves
Exiting from cave on river
Today we visited the Waitomo caves to see the cave-dwelling glow worms. This is a very special trip where guided groups walks down a series of stairways passing though a number of chambers into the limestone cave and there board a boat. The guide then pulls the boat along fixed lines in total darkness except for the glow worms attached to the ceiling of the cave. The glow worms give off a bright blue bio luminesence that attracts mosquitoes and small moths into the caves. They become entangled in the glow worm's mucus fishing lines and are eaten by the worms. Kiwi House

We arrived quite late on our first day in New Zealand so only had time for a quick stroll around the city then a spot of dinner. A very nice dinner too, after all a new country means a new budget, so we are rich.  On our second day we went to see a few of the city attractions which included the Victoria Park Market. Not many stalls were open but we the all important puzzle stall was. This is where we met Steve. Steve is a facinating man who very much enjoys puzzles and psycology. So much so that he [View Full Entry]

We can't believe it is already Day 17!! Today we arrived in Lake Wanaka, only 3 hours from Lake Tekapo. The feeling here is more touristy, but the scenery is unbelievable. I feel like I am seeing The Lord of the Rings or Brokeback Mountain! Just another day of pure relaxation and catching up on our US duties. Tomorrow, we are doing a morning hike and then our Queenstown adventure begins!!! Enjoy the awe inspiring pics; I am wondering if any of these are Lord of the Rings scenes? We miss you all back home!! Hope everyone is doing well!! Thank [View Full Entry]

Lake Tekapo Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Lake Tekapo
Today we took a road trip to Lake Tekapo, just south of Christchurch. The total ride was about 3 hours and when we arrived the Lake was breathtaking!! We couldn't believe how blue the water was. The amazing turquoise-blue color of the Lake is created by "rock flour", which the glaciers in the headwaters grind to make a fine dust. The fine dust particles in combination with the sunlight create this unique color. As you can see from the pictures, the Lake is a gem. Some of the pics were taking when it was cloudy and some sunny. You will notice [View Full Entry]

Sunday, November 8th We hadn’t seen Wobbles in two days and we were really worried about her. Bruce walked down to the building site mewing and calling her. When we arrived down there we were very relieved to hear that he’d found her. She was very scared and skittish, having spent two nights out in the wild. At least we knew she was safe and still around. We continued with the structure, but the going was slow because today we only had one chainsaw. Even so we were still happy with our progress. We felt confident and enjoyed applying the thinking [View Full Entry]

This morning we flew to the South Island of New Zealand to Christchurch. It was freezing here! About 9 C or 50F. When we arrived at the airport, we picked up our rental car (Toyota Yaris- Manual- Steve's a driving) and headed to the International Antarctic Centre. This attraction is located adjacent to the airport and was an interactive and chilling experience! I learned Christchurch is known as the "Gateway to Antarctica". Any countries including those signed in the 1959 Antarctic Treaty must pass through the International Antarctic Centre. The United States Antarctica Program is housed [View Full Entry]
