Background: The Polynesian Maori reached New Zealand in about A.D. 800. In 1840, their chieftains entered into a compact with Britain, the Treaty of Waitangi, in which they ceded sovereignty to Queen Victoria while retaining territorial rights. In that same year, the British began the first organized colonial settlement. A series of land wars between 1843 and 1872 ended with the defeat of the native peoples. The British colony of New Zealand became an independent dominion in 1907 and supported the UK militarily in both World Wars. New Zealand's full participation in a number of defense alliances lapsed by the 1980s. In recent years, the government has sought to address longstanding Maori grievances.

Proving why Auckland is known as 'The City of Sails'
This week found me getting quite involved with the New Zealand lifestyle... It started with a visit to the Auckland Museum, where I learned about the people of the South Pacific as well as the natural sciences familiar to the area (I even got to experience a volcano from the inside of a house!). I spent a very nice afternoon there learning about the various things and was sad to have to head out into the (relatively) cold, wet weather afterward. I certainly won't complain too much about the weather though, out of respect for those of you approaching winter. Wednesday [View Full Entry]

After my skydive, I picked up Ralphy in Franz Josef after his glacier hike. Now gasoline is expensive in Franz Josef, in fact a whopping 189.9L. So with a little better then a ¼ of a tank I decided lets fuel up later. The sun was shining and the early evening drive was beautiful. We stopped in a little town called Haast to find the fuel store closed. It was just a little past six. We had a decision to make, it was about 140km through the mountains to Wanaka and we had less than a ¼ of a tank of [View Full Entry]

This cemetery goes back to the earliest days of European settlement in Whangarei. From 1882 until 1946 some 1000 burials were carried out at the Kioreroa cemetery. However, it had become neglected over the last fifty years and many graves and stones had been damaged or removed. Some of the land was even sold off for industrial development. Since 2007 a lot of effort has been put into restoring the area and walls have been erected now with plaques bearing the names of all persons known to have been buried there. The unveiling is the latest chapter in this story but much [View Full Entry]

Oct 26-29 - Labour Weekend continues... (Monday-Thursday) After saying goodbye to the Woods and Sydney, who had to return to Timaru and to school, we headed to Nelson. Wow, were we lucky with the weather. It was sunny all morning, became overcast late morning, and basically rained the rest of the day and night. We drove through Nelson, which looks like a lovely sailing community, and to the World of Wearable Arts (WOW) and Collectible Car Museum. How cool is that to have something for the men and the women:) They were both great museums and wonderful displays of talent. I [View Full Entry]

Kia Ora! Well after 36 hours of flying and an agonisingly dull 10-hour wait at Brunei airport, I finally made it here to Auckland, New Zealand. Having slept in departure lounges and eaten nothing but plane food for the last 3 days, the thought of clean clothes and a bed has never seemed more appealing! First of all I apologise for how long this blog is - I promise the next ones will be shorter! My first thoughts as I set out into Auckland were, "Oh great, another city!" and to be truthful, you can see why travellers don't linger too [View Full Entry]

Day 5 - 11: Northland, Bay of Islands & Far North Region - New Zealand 10-19-09 - Monday morning found us finally departing Auckland for the region referred to as the Northland. Vehicle traffic became much less the further north we moved away for Auckland - thank goodness as learning to drive on the left side in busy Auckland was stressful and everyone was in a hurry while we were not. North out of Auckland is Highway 1 and smaller roads off Hwy. 1 would carry us to some very remote areas along the NZ east coast. One of our first [View Full Entry]

Days 40 to 46  Oceania » New Zealand » North Island
Day 40 13th October - Greymouth to Nelson. This morning we left a very grey and cloudy Greymouth and started making our way up towards Nelson along the surf-pounded Tasman Sea coastline. It’s one of the planets 10 best road trips according to the Lonely Planet Blue List! Our first stop was Punakaiki & the famous Pancake Rocks and Blowholes. The limestone has formed into what looks like piles of thick pancakes & if caught at the right time of day the sea surges into caverns and booms menacingly through blowholes. We continued North and took a slight detour off the [View Full Entry]
