Schroeder family

Shanghai Sheri

In 2006, our family began what we thought was a 3 year adventure of living and traveling in China. But like Gilligan, our 3 year tour turned into something much longer and deeper than we expected. We are now beginning a second segment in Asia, sans kids. Seoul, South Korea is our new home which makes Matt and I "Seoul mates".

Continue the journey along with us as we publish blogs of our new Korean, empty nesting life.

Once upon a time, in a beautiful blue ocean far, far away, there stood a family of rugged mountain volcanoes. But there was trouble in paradise. The villainous ocean insidiously attacked and eroded it’s volcanic inhabitants. With time, the mountain peaks relented to the ever punishing ocean and eventually sank away, leaving only perimeter rings of earth material as evidence of their former presence. With time, coral colonized on the land and grew to create strange looking ring shaped islands containing large protected lagoons within. As with all fairy tales though, this ends happily ever after. For within the lagoons, life once again became a paradise providing for all sorts of creatures. Such was how we found existence on and around the atoll of Fakarava in the Tuamotu islands. Warm, moist, and oh so colorful. Like ... read more

A toast to where, what, who??? To Pohnpei, a small island located about 7 degrees north of the equator on the far east side of the Micronesian Islands in the southern Pacific ocean. Tropical, remote, serene. But why on earth would anyone, other than the native Pohnpeians, spend the bucks and the time required to get to this out of the way place that doesn’t even have a white sandy beach to boast of? In the short 8 days which we spent in this beautiful place, we encountered not a single other tourist. We did; however, discover at least 10 different reasons, other than tourism, that people will journey from their home comfort zone and endure the hardship of working in this tropical destination: 1. US Department of Health and Human Services grant assistance: “We are ... read more

It’s spring 2010. Expo Shanghai is crowded and hot. Kirsten and I venture into the South Pacific pavilion to escape the crowds and get a taste of island life. Numerous little grass huts are scattered in an air conditioned arena. Tahiti, Fiji, Vanuatu, Guam,....and Palau?? Hmmm, what is this place, Palau? Pictures of swimming with jellyfish and beautiful azure waters tweak my curiosity. Flash forward to fall, 2011. Matt and I are seeking a warm February getaway. That jellyfish picture calls out from my memory. And now the discovery begins! Every twist and turn throughout our journey reveals to us a place of surprising ease of travel, familiarity, and yet exotic pleasures. First it’s location: a mere 5 hour direct flight SE of Seoul AND using frequent flier miles, free for Matt! Widespread use of English ... read more

An air of excitement fills the small plane for our 1 hour flight from Nairobi to the Masai Mara airstrip. I am seated beside a Spanish naturalist who specializes in large cats and snakes. He will spend 20 days in Masai Mara studying. Wow, I’m excited for my upcoming 4 days in the Mara! Upon deboarding, we are greeted by Dixon, our driver/guide and Gladys, our game spotter. Both are Masai. Up we climb into our private Toyota 4WD land rover. Comfy wide seats, open sides for full viewing, freedom to drive over rocks, muddy ravines, two-tracks and no-tracks, constant jiggling to the body and new sights opening my awareness – this is going to be good! Before even getting to our camp, we already observe a huge diversity of animals ranging from varieties of antelopes ... read more

I asked God to put me in the presence of “Godly” people. People who could help me to see and know Him. People who could inspire me to think and act in ways which would lead me to be as He intended. I didn’t expect to find them on a short touring type trip to a country ravaged with violence, poverty, and corruption. I didn’t expect to notice them in short encounters. But yet they were there, revealed in many tales. Tales of wisdom, generosity, heroism, and persistence. So here I begin yet another travel blog. Yes, this one is filled with amazing sights and fun experiences. But also, this one contains a few tales which should be told. After all, there is much beauty and goodness in the world and it is indeed good to ... read more

We’ve been planning and anticipating it for months. The whole family together in Korea! And, adding even more joy to our gathering this year, we are joined by 3 more young adults who are special to our family. There was much excitement and a bit of anxiety. Will they all manage to navigate the requirements of flying here on their own? Indeed, it required 4 waves of trips to the airport just to pick them all up. Will all 6 of them fit into our “apartment for 2”? Will we manage to stock enough food to feed them all? Will we really find enough to do that fits everyone’s interests? Will all of our pre-arranged activities go off smoothly? Will we all manage to stay healthy for the duration? Will we ever sleep??? In short: yes, ... read more

We’ve now been together in Korea for more than 8 weeks. Still, it feels foreign and unsettled for me, while Matt daily plows into his job as if he’s thick in the trenches of war. Moving here without kids has meant there is more time but less sense of worthiness to my daily activities. Nevertheless, being an expat in a new city also means one can be busy from sun up til sun down simply by striving to keep the home organized, staying in touch with family back home, perusing markets and stores to stock the kitchen with acceptable yet healthy cuisine, learning the language and culture, prioritizing daily fitness, finding new friends, exploring what the city has to offer, and navigating the roads, subways, and buses to get around. So here’s a few interesting things ... read more

Do something everyday that scares you. That’s the motto of my 18 year old daughter, Jessica. Luckily for me, as an American living in Asia, accomplishing that is no problem! There’s the little things, like riding a subway throughout a new city without being able to speak or read the language. Or perhaps it’s simply getting lost in the markets – again with no language skills. Then there’s the biggies. The ones you look back on and say, hmmm, now that was a little crazy, but now that I’ve done it, I feel like I can handle traveling the world. For me, that’s just a handful of things. Included in that list would be using a squatty potty – over troughs, mountains of s*#t, or open air behind a rock. Also included would be the art ... read more

Bula Fiji

Bula. A simple Fijian greeting. I love the way the natives allow the “la” to float off their tongue, as if gently sending a kind “hello” into the warm Fiji breeze. Then there’s the way the manly men of Fiji thrust out the word from the back of their throat, with a guttural emphasis on the “Bu” – Bula!! Reminiscent of the past days when fierce warriors would cannibalize the missionaries and British sea captains who tried to change their native way of life. Or perhaps my favorite way to use this greeting is sort of like a dance for the tongue, “Bula Bula!” said in rapid succession. Like our British friends lifting off an upbeat “Cheeri-o!”. However you say it, this one word pretty much defines our Fiji experience. A bit of relaxed warm breeze ... read more

I Love Bali!! These are the words still ringing in my ears some 4 days after returning from our Bali holiday. They were joyously shouted by our river rafting guide as we whirled a 360 through the rushing water of the Ayung River. Laughter and squeals from all of us accompanied his decree. Wow, this place is amazing! You might think that travel to an Indonesian island located some 8 degrees below the equator would be a “beach vacation”. However, for this year’s short family get away, we decided to focus on the “inner beauty” instead. We selected the lovely villas at Agung Khalia, outside of Ubud, as our home base of exploration. With only 4 full days to take it all in, we decided action was the name of the game. Days were occupied with ... read more
