Background: The Polynesian Maori reached New Zealand in about A.D. 800. In 1840, their chieftains entered into a compact with Britain, the Treaty of Waitangi, in which they ceded sovereignty to Queen Victoria while retaining territorial rights. In that same year, the British began the first organized colonial settlement. A series of land wars between 1843 and 1872 ended with the defeat of the native peoples. The British colony of New Zealand became an independent dominion in 1907 and supported the UK militarily in both World Wars. New Zealand's full participation in a number of defense alliances lapsed by the 1980s. In recent years, the government has sought to address longstanding Maori grievances.

AUCKLAND - DAY TWO The weather is still “brisky” as I take a walk towards Victoria Park and Market. The city is alive but there is no madness as people and cars maneuver streets and crosswalks in a civil manner. No honking horns just an unusual beep and clicking sound when the pedestrian crossing signal is activated. Some intersections offer diagonal as well as normal street crossings. There are a few hills to maneuver as I criss cross the city but I eventually end up on Queens Street and have my first sample of New Zealand lamb. Kebab On Queen has [View Full Entry]

The black one
The red one
Black one again

A strange but wonderful thing happened as we were travelling around the southern tip of the South Island. On the advice of several people in Milford Sound we set off on the Catlins Scenic Drive. The rain was pouring down, there were sheep and baby lambs everywhere and it was all very green looking. It was like we had been transport home to Ireland! I say it is a wonderful thing because while I was appreciating the scenery around me, it dawned on me that in a rugged natural way, it was special. Given the likeness to home it allowed me [View Full Entry]

Day 39 12th October - Franz Josef Glaciers Heli-Hike, Skydive, Lake Matterson & finally onto Greymouth. Today was one hell of an action filled day! We woke up really early and made our way to the Heli-hike office, from there we were weighed and then we crossed over the road to a little shack to get our boots and special coats on. After a quick word or two regarding safety, we were split us into three groups (we were group number 2), each group got on to their helicopters and made there way over to the Glacier. The helicopter ride was [View Full Entry]

Slept in a bit to start my first day off. It was cloudy again so I decided to walk over to the library and use their free internet which is better then the one at the hostel. Did a bit of research on jobs and updating my blog while talking to mom on skype. By lunch time it was super sunny and the clouds had disappeared so I walked back to the hostel and met the other girls who were just finishing up work and after we ate lunch we all walked down to the harbour and played a round of [View Full Entry]
