Background: The Polynesian Maori reached New Zealand in about A.D. 800. In 1840, their chieftains entered into a compact with Britain, the Treaty of Waitangi, in which they ceded sovereignty to Queen Victoria while retaining territorial rights. In that same year, the British began the first organized colonial settlement. A series of land wars between 1843 and 1872 ended with the defeat of the native peoples. The British colony of New Zealand became an independent dominion in 1907 and supported the UK militarily in both World Wars. New Zealand's full participation in a number of defense alliances lapsed by the 1980s. In recent years, the government has sought to address longstanding Maori grievances.

Alrighty, so I'm leaving my halfway house - halfway down Dominion Rd and heading on the big OE. It's now time to get the blog site sorted so people can track my adventures. I'm leaving on the 11th, have almost finished packing my bags. Not that the bag I'm travelling with has much in it, it's more the bags I sending to London, donating to Charity & throwing in the garbage that seem to take up most of my time. Anyhow, I'm not travelling yet so motivation to talk about the travels is pretty low. [View Full Entry]

Sheep in the city

I left Stewart Island. After 9 days I finally went to the post office/flight centre and bought a stand by flight (no way I was getting on that boat back to the mainland). There was no room on the midday flight so I had to take the 4:30 flight. We were put into a van and driven out of the town and up a big hill to a little lonely patch of tarmac. The plane was a Cesna 8 passenger plane with two propellers (thats the best aviation lingo that I have). I sat beside the pilot and we chatted the [View Full Entry]

Finally something decently interesting to report: I took a quick trip with a friend up to the North Island, against my better judgment and money concerns. I had to return today because I have an exam tomorrow, but we spent a day in Wellington and a day in Matamata in order to visit the location of the Hobbiton/Shire film set from The Lord of the Rings. However, it took us four days to do all of this due to airplanes and especially due to buses. In Wellington we ate lunch at Fidel's, which was apparently a favorite place of the LotR [View Full Entry]

So, next stop Wanaka, with a few detours on the way. So glad i took the Magic Bus now, if you did it alone, you'd miss out on so much. The drivers have so much local knowledge and explain stuff during the journey about the history of places, and stop off to let you wander around. The big stop this morning was Lake Mattheson, one of the most photographed sites on the South Island. Beautiful place, we had an hour to walk around it and get the essential pics. We carried on into Wanaka, not a lot of people got off [View Full Entry]

Taupo Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Taupo
08/06/09 Monday Day 297 Freefalling Just after checking in to our hostel, Tiki Lodge, we enquired about doing a skydive. Taupo is apparently the cheapest place in the world they say to do a jump. We had already picked out the company and to our luck, 3 people in our hostel were getting collected so we were able to hop in with them. So no time to think or get nervous…..or so we thought. There’s loads of different options for the jump, 12000 feet, 15000 feet, video taped with either a handicam by your jump buddy or another skydiver with a [View Full Entry]

June 8th 2009 Jackie: Long day at school today. Lisa will be out of the classroom Monday, Wednesday, and Friday this week, so today we had a substitute. Whenever someone else is in charge of a class, the students are always a little rowdy. The sub was much more strict with noise, sitting properly, and classroom procedures than Lisa is (I suppose when you are a sub, you have to be a bit more strict because of the students). My reading lesson with my top group is going really well. I hope to have them through the stories by Wednesday and [View Full Entry]

Hi Everyone, Hope you're all well and enjoying the warm weather back home. Last time we wrote we left you in the middle of the Cook Strait heading to the North Island of New Zealand. On arriving in Wellington we were met by the warm waves and smiles of Jon and his wife Bridget. (Jon being Kev's dad's cousin, or Kev's 2nd Cousin we later determind.) So nice to be met on arrival in a new place and not work out how to get somewhere. We spent 4 nights with them enjoying great hospitality and being shown around the sights and [View Full Entry]

A North and A South Island That Make New Zealand To all who wish to read on, Greetings! Thank you for checking out my blog. I have been lacking on writing blogs of my adventures, and over the last month neglected writing anything about my experience in New Zealand. So, I have given myself 45 minutes to write all I can about my experience there. It’s mostly going to be a summary of events and things I saw or encountered. If you dare to read on, it will be lengthy. My next ones will be shorter as I am going to [View Full Entry]
