Background: The Polynesian Maori reached New Zealand in about A.D. 800. In 1840, their chieftains entered into a compact with Britain, the Treaty of Waitangi, in which they ceded sovereignty to Queen Victoria while retaining territorial rights. In that same year, the British began the first organized colonial settlement. A series of land wars between 1843 and 1872 ended with the defeat of the native peoples. The British colony of New Zealand became an independent dominion in 1907 and supported the UK militarily in both World Wars. New Zealand's full participation in a number of defense alliances lapsed by the 1980s. In recent years, the government has sought to address longstanding Maori grievances.

Rainy rainy day Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Wellington

Today it was POURING rain out. We didn’t even want to go outside. Meike read while I job searched for most of the day. I emailed a hostel in Picton where you can work for your accommodations and they emailed me back right away to let me know that I can come anytime I want. I will go there on October 14th and get out of Windy Welly and off to the South Island!! We went out to the supermarket which is only a 5 minute walk and got soaked! After the Coromandel we stayed in the coastal town of Whakatane for two nights before heading inland to Rotorua. For those of you that don't know (we didn't) Rotorua is a geothermal wonderland set on a volcanic plateau which means there are plenty of hot springs, bubbling mud pools, steam rising ominously from the ground and a permanent stench of sulphur in the air. It really is overpowering sometimes. We have had a couple of quiet days, but still able to see some former friends and find some new ones. Since we were in town, we went to visit the grave of our dear friend, Frank Ranger, who passed away last summer. While we were there, we were able to witness a very touching and poignant vignette of love and devotion. Hi all, We arrived in Lake Toupo in the late afternoon, the scenic journey down was less than a couple of hours, and not surprisingly in almost winter the forest fire signs were all set to low. As soon as we arrived in Toupo, Diarmuid bought a fishing licence and quizzed the shop assistant on the best fishing spots. So with all the equipment and information needed off we went up the Waikato River for some dusk fishing. Back on the Stray bus for the second day of our intrepid adventure. Going on to Invercargill, then catching the ferry to Stuart Island to spend the night. I had previously been told by an Invercargill resident that the place was a dump, so really not expecting much. But it was surprisingly nice. From Dunedin to the Catlins... Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Queenstown

Day 28 1st October - Dunedin This morning we jumped on the bus into the City Centre and made our way to the Cadbury’s Factory - Yes the Chocolate one!!  Unfortunately there were no Umpalumpas much to Steve’s and my disappointment, made even worse when the children were given big chocolate Easter eggs and not us!!! We did get free chocolate though and the smell inside the factory is delicious!!!
