Here we are in Queenstown now, can not believe that we are getting through this country so fast. I guess it is because the last time we were driving Oz and it seemed to take forever to get anywhere as it is so vast! The drive here was stunning, the scenery was as if it has been painted on. Along our way we have visited the pancake rocks, which are strange rock formations that are flat like pancakes from erosion and weathering, blow holes throw water into the air during high tide! We arrived in high tide and high winds so could see it and get a bit wet in the process ha ha ha! Then to one of the best things we have both seen yet....the glaciers! The Glaciers are something that i was really ... read more

There was rain overnight…not a good sign for what the weather was going to be like for the day. There had even been a light snowfall and the mountains are clouded in. Today we are booked at 9.15am to do a heli-hike on Franz Joseph Glacier - how exciting! This combines a brief helicopter ride to about 2/3rds up on the glacier then a hike for 2-3 hours. So this means another early morning - at least it’s a half decent 7.30! Still, we both could really go a sleep in; especially with no kitty cats to run around crazy til we fed them. It’s raining the entire 30 minute drive to FJ Village and the cloud has not budged from the mountains. Our fears are confirmed after checking with the booking desk for our tour. ... read more

so we have now hit the west coast of new zealand. we spent a day at the buller gorge and went on a zip swing across the river which was pretty cool! then we headed down to punakaiki where we went to see the pancake rocks and blow holes. it was a great day weather wise but beacuse it was so sunny the blow holes didnt work as the tide was too calm but the rocks were still cool! there were awsome views from here too, we could see the southern alps in the ditance covered in now!! made us want to go ski! our next stop were the glaciers. as you can imagin the temperature had dropped a bit down here so was quite chilly! we spent the first day visiting the glaciers and doing ... read more

Being used to early starts by now, we got up before sunrise to do a walk around the base of Franz Joseph glacier, as we were going to hike up the Fox glacier later that day. On the way we saw a lake which had the clearest reflection of Franz Joseph - see the picture. Unfortunatley, due to high demand, we were unable to do the full day hike up Fox glacier, as we had hoped. Instead we did the half day, which was amazing, just a little short. We were kitted out with crampons and set off on an hours walk to the front of the glacier. From here we had a steap fifteen minute climb beside the face, where we put on our crampons and stepped onto the ice. The colour of the ice ... read more

Well, we are here and after a night in Christchurch we collected our (brand new only 600 Km on clock) Blue Moon Van and set off for a visit to Akoroa, a small peninsula town with French orgins, about sixty kilometres from Christchurch. We walked, visited the museum, ahd delicious fish and chips and freedom camped in down at Le Bons Bay, an even more isolated locations, infact we belived we might have been the only ones there. The next day we set off up hte mountain and through the clouds, on our way to Lake Tekapo, which was brilliant blue due to the glacial waters. We decided the treat outselves to a campsite overlooking the lake, where Joanna and James went on a bike ride (where Joanna fell off!), while we ran around the ... read more

As we headed back up the west coast we reached the fox and st francis glaciers. We took a helicopter flight over the gaciers to get a birds eye view and actually landed on top of the mountains in the snow. hannah did a hike through the ice but me and jade were being too lazy as it was uphill so didnt do that bit. It was really cool flying over all the snow, you can see where the ice has water in it and its bright blue, it really is like off superman. ... read more

Ok, so it does rain on the west coast! But is that going to deter us from having a fantastic day on the ice, nah!!! So here it goes Hiking on Franz Josef Glacier! A group of nine hiking enthusiasts and our most handsome guide Troy! Can he ever hit away at that ice to carve the steps for us tourists!! So after a bush-hike through the rainforest, we reached the bottom of the glacier , put on the Talons (crampons) and started hiking on the ice, first up a few stairs, pulling ourselves up on the rope which was so nicely put there by a couple of other guides who have been working since 7 am to get the glacier ready for the tourists. And then of into unchartered waters, or should I say ice? ... read more

Our first stop to day is Punakaika about 40km north of Greymouth, there is a short board walk along the coast here that allows access to some pretty interesting and unusual limestone formations. The rocks have a layered affect hence their name Pancake Rocks, there are also some impressive blow holes but we missed the tide so missed the show, but it was a beautiful place and very photogenic ofcourse. It took about 2 hours to get to our cabin Whataroa where we dumped our bags and headed to an information kiosk to book ourselves on a Helicopter Hike on the top of Fox Glacier. We then headed to Franz Joseph the "town" that services the Glacier tourists before taking a walk to the ice face, we decided not to get to close as I didnt ... read more

Guys guys guys, appologies for the lack of blogs recently but I've been a busy bunny. This one will have very few words but some amazing pictures! Last week can only be described as amazing. I had a three day field trip where I got paid to tour the South Island, eating out every night and staying in some nice hotels, while learning some very interesting facts about the geology and geography of New Zealand. Last weekend, Rj and I finally managed to get 4 days off together so we headed out on an ADVENTURE of a MASSIVE scale. We headed over to the West Coast to see the Alps and the Glaciers that they host. We got a helicpoter tour over both the Franz Joseph and Fox Glaciers and had a snow landing right at ... read more

On the way to Te Taho to catch up with a friend of Dave's. Along the way we stopped at Ross an old gold mining town. We did a walk of water race that was used to supply the gold miners with water the alluvial mining operations. They washed all the silt down the valleys and got it at the bottom, then extracted the gold. The largest gold nugget ever found in NZ was found here, and was 99oz in 1907. Mark's farm is about 2500ac and he has 500 cow dairy herd. We based ourselves here because Franz Josef and Fox Glacier where only just down the road. Dave had worked for Mark on his dairy farm on the North Island for 2 years and had come down south when they purchased this farm on ... read more
