Thursday - woke up to find the clouds gone and a beautiful snow-capped mountain outside our door. So we went for a walk to see the Franz Josef glacier - we got pretty close to it, but didn't actually walk on it. Close up, glaciers are not pristine and white, but dirty, covered with soil and rocks, and the meltwater that flows out of them is milky grey with silt. Access to the area immediately in front of the glacier is by ladder and appears to be controlled by the companies running the tours. However we ignored the various warnings and during a break in the procession of guided tours ascended the latter and made our way to within 20 yds or so of the glacier itself. Close up it is indeed massive, row upon row ... read more

The drive down to Fox was amazing. Just fabulously gorgeous. Mountain views (Mt. Cook and Mt. Tasman I think) all the way along. I kept stopping to take pics. The roads were fine. There was a 100k limit, 50k through the towns. They were a bit bendy, but not much different from a country-ish A road in the UK. Every now and then though, there were some major bendy bits! You get signs saying that there are some serious wiggles for the next 16k! Some bends have sings saying to go round them at 25kmh! Very tight. But if you go slow it's no problem at all. So this morning I walked up Fox Glacier. WOW. Stunning. Amazing. A must do experience. I wasn't sure what to expeect, didn't know if it was some ice berg ... read more

Phils Day... Today I went Ice Climbing on the Franz Josef Glacier. The day started at 7.45am where we met our 2 glacier guides and 7 more participants (8 including myself). We headed off up the Franz Josef valley in a rickety old van which had a fragant smell of probably hundreds of other peoples sweat. nice. We parked and started walking up the valley until we met the glacier's terminal face, the lowest in the world at 280m above sea level. The glacier itself is dirty with grit and strewn with rocks and boulders; around are huge cliffs and mountains with waterfalls crahing down - and to make things even more spectacular its sunny with just a few clouds. sunshine at last! We fitted out crampons and climbed our way onto the glacier via cut ... read more

After doing some sight seeing down the West Coast of South Island, I would then come to the Glaciers. Fox and Franz Josif. On my previous trip to New Zealand, I did a day walk up the Franz Josif Glacier (which was great). This time however I wanted to have a go at Ice Climbing and check out Fox glacier. With the day walk (previous trip) the guide cuts steps in the ice for you. This was good but this time I was able to venture off the normal cut tracks and on to virgin glacier. Nice! On the day walk you don't get proper crampons to walk about with, but with ice climbing you do - and you bloody need them! The guide to tourist ratio for the day walk is about 1:25. For ice ... read more

And on to the main event. I Was rudely awakened at an hour before 8am, i'm not sure which one, to go on an ICe Climbing trip. During the gear allocation, you start to realise that there might be some proper physical exertion involved. We get given special Ice Boots, lethal looking Ice picks, apparently very painful if used in the wrong manner - Crampons as well as heavy duty climbing ropes being distributed among the group. Our group consisted of the two girls (Niamh/Judith), myself and Martin... a random guy from poland... wearing army pants... who was actually in the army... NATO to be precise and was holidaying before going off to afghanistan. it was looking very unlikely that my male pride would take a backseat and content itself with keeping up with the ... read more

hoping i'm not speaking too soon, but there's actually sun out this morning! the weather cleared up a bit last night, making the mountains visible in the distance. we were thinking of going back out to franz josef glacier to retake some pix, but all of our gear was still soaked. somehow i don't think we would have made it just wearing flipflops... we're just about to leave for fox glacier -- about a 30 minute drive from franz josef. i think we're gonna try to get on an all-day hike on the glacier (7-8 hours, i think). it says the minimum age is 15 years. i hope i'm at least as fit as them... ... read more

made it from fox glacier in one piece. we couldn't get on the full day hike -- it was, well, full. so we bummed around town for a couple of hours and went out to lake matheson to kill time. we managed to book ourselves for the afternoon half-day hike. thankfully the weather held up and we took in some spectacular views. apparently some of the scenes from "lord of the rings" were shot at both franz josef and fox glaciers. you can tell why they chose those locations. it's quite breathtaking to be up on the ice. aside from some scary heights and cravasses, we had a great time. our guide, pesssang, was a nepalese sherpa that works over here for six months of the year. the rest of the time he works over at ... read more

Oh my lord, what an experience we have had these past few days. I dont even think words can even describe it and we hope the pictures do it justice. We had a very early start on Thursday, and it was so cold in Queenstown..cant wait for the hot sun in Sydney. We had the most informative and interesting coach journey. 8 hours but seemed like only a few. The Newmans coach service offer a first class service by talking and showing you the sights with many stops for photo opportunities. This week we have seen Lake Wanaka, please see the great photo with the jetty and the ... read more

And so we hit off on our trusty steed (read: battered rental Corolla), following the spectactulour Tranzalpine trail through the Southern Alps from Christchurch to the west coast, through Arthurs Pass. The scenery (chosen as the Misty Mountains for LOTR) was fantastic, and we stopped a couple of times to head off on a "tramp" or walk through the forestry and mountains to waterfalls and scenic viewpoints. Finally arrived in "Glacier Country", home of the Franz Josef and Fox glaciers, and stopped in Franz Josef, a tiny 2-street village probably smaller than Geesala at home! Booked on the full-day hike on Franz Josef (the word's steepest and fastest flowing commercially guided glacer), before taking the car down to the nearby Fox Glacer to do some more tramping in the area round the glacier itself and Lake ... read more

After the delights of Abel Tasman national park and all the lovely wine of Marlborough, we headed off to Christchurch to stay with Graham’s good friend Tim. It was a relief to be out of the campervan for a few nights. Charming and lovely as it is to be so independent, Tim’s spare divan was like five star luxury to us after three weeks of sleeping on a converted kitchen table. On their reunion, after many months of separation, Tim and Graham got totally rat-arsed and stayed up until four in the morning reminiscing about schooldays and laughing a lot. Perfect! We enjoyed a fine day mooching around the city then went to visit Tim at the restaurant where he is a chef. He cooked us a marvellous venison dinner despite his hangover and the lack ... read more
