After a night of little sleep, I stood on the side of the road (with 3 horses, 2 cows, a pig and a dog for company) waiting for a bus to take me to Suva. What amazed me was that whenever a car would drive past, the animals would all move away from the road, some even looked for cars before crossing! After an endless bus ride along some fantastic coastline I found myself in Suva - Fiji’s capital - and busting for the toilet! The local policeman had a grin on his face when he told me where the nearest public throne was and on entering I knew why. Lets just say that the thongs (flip flops) I was wearing were doing the job that rubber boots were designed for… Having no desire to wander ... read more

During my time in Lautoka I met a 19y.o. Ausy guy from Canberra called Kieran who was in Fiji trying to convince the family of his Indian girlfriend not to give her away to another man as part of an arranged wedding. Not a pretty situation… While he was waiting to meet with the family we went for a ride into the surrounding hills to see the Fiji highlands. After paying a stupid amount of money and pushing 2 trucks out of a river we finally made it to the Koroyanitu village. After being given a dodgy map and vague instructions about where the trail actually went, we decided that as long as we were going up we would get there in the end. On the way we walked along a ridge of tall grass then ... read more

Arriving in Fiji after a 10 year absence, I was keen to both relive my childhood memories and discover new areas that I had not been to. Not wanting to stand out like every other tourist I immediately caught the bus that would take me away from Nadi to Lautoka and checked in to a cheap hotel on the outskirts of town. The first thing I did in town was go to the roadside stalls that sold Indian sweets and food which I had missed all those years. After spending $4 I had eaten enough to last me until morning when I would go to the open air market and buy some fresh fruit - and more Indian food. I soon became immersed in the sights, sounds and smells of the town. Each brought back different ... read more

this is our last day in fiji, which has been great! it is unbelieveably like india... the smell, food, people, weather.. and when it stopped raining we actually saw what we had come to see ie blue skies, seas and beaches! we stayed on another island for the past 4 days- called mana island. cos we obviously aint got as much money to spend we stayed in a backpackers place.. but it was right next door to where tom hanks stayed when he filmed castaway! and apparently the island where they filmed it is just like it looks in the movie.. we had real mamas to look after us who cooked our food, cleaned our room and always had a smile and a 'bula' (hello in fijian) for us.. it was really nice! we also went ... read more

Oceania » Fiji » Yasawa Islands March 31st 2005

'Bula' from Fiji... Purely by luck we were told at the last minute about a resort in the Yasawa Islands, north of Viti Levu (the main island). The island was Waya and the resort Octopus. When we got booked in I thought great, play some tennis, eat in one of the few restaurants they're bound to have, walk round the resort, maybe use the gym and obviously the pool....oh no, no.. the boat rounded a corner and in front stood the tiny beach resort of about half a mile long by 60 yards deep at the base of some hills. The boat stopped 1/4 mile off shore and the 'locals' came out to fetch us on a little wooden boat! Talk about simplicity - a beach, a toilet and shower block and a covered food area ... read more

After almost two weeks of beach life we decided to take a trip to see something of note. The hostel was running a small tour to a local village so we could see how 'real' Fijians live. The village was situated about 25kms inland from the coral coast. Nine of us piled into a truck facing each other and we set of for the bumpy journey. The truck had two uncomfortable wooden benches to sit on and a linoleum roof, at least there was plenty of air flowing through. The road was good for about 5 mins, then we started to climb a steep red mud path through the forrest. There were some amazing views along the road and we stopped for a photo opportunity. About 15kms into the drive our truck got stuck in the ... read more

We've been here a week and done very little, we go to sleep about 9pm as the sun wakes us up at 6am, we've been lying on the beach every day and swimming in the sea, it's been great to relax and catch up with some reading. The food has been good and the weather even better, it rains every day but only for about 10 minutes or so but boy does it come down however 10 minutes later you would have no idea that it had been wet. We took a bus to the Capital, Suva, one day and that wasn't nice, so hot and smoggy with loads of people begging and dodgy people following us, not much fun. We need to do more next week though as we're starting to twiddle our thumbs after ... read more

We actually arrived yesterday (Friday) but didn't want to add to the already huge post. This is where the diarised journals stop and the interesting only stuff appears, we'll keep it updated as much as we can and will include photo's as and when we can. We arrived at Nadi (Nan-dee) International Airport around 1pm, it was a 3 hour flight from Auckland and we gained an hour too, we're now 12 hours ahead of GMT. The heat instantly struck us, it had just stopped raining and the humidity was as hot as I've ever felt, it was only 25 degrees but felt about 35+. We've arrived in the hot and wet season, the other being warm and dry, it averages about 29 at this time of year with a humidity factor that is in to ... read more

Hey folks, So thought it was about time we told you what we got up in the glorious pacific island of Fiji. Well, for starters it's a darn sight hotter than where you are!! Smugness over, I promise. We landed in Nadi on 5th February at 4am, having left LA on the 3rd, and crossing the international date line meant that Friday 4th Feb never happened for us. Oh well. We were in a bit of a daze at that time of the morning, but managed to find our way to the tour office and get our transfer to the hotel. I had beans on toast for breakfast, tasted pretty much like back home, which was rather nice. Fiji is (I think) still part of the commonwealth, and so there is a picture of the Queen ... read more
