magic!sunset on the coral coast
During my time in Lautoka I met a 19y.o. Ausy guy from Canberra called Kieran who was in Fiji trying to convince the family of his Indian girlfriend not to give her away to another man as part of an arranged wedding. Not a pretty situation…
While he was waiting to meet with the family we went for a ride into the surrounding hills to see the Fiji highlands. After paying a stupid amount of money and pushing 2 trucks out of a river we finally made it to the Koroyanitu village.
After being given a dodgy map and vague instructions about where the trail actually went, we decided that as long as we were going up we would get there in the end. On the way we walked along a ridge of tall grass then through fern and moss covered trees that made a thick forest.
After 1 ½ hours we came to a clearing on the top of the mountain and a cabin with bunk beds and a cooking hut that would have been a great place to spend the night. We climbed on top of the roof and from here could see Nadi, Lautoka and many of
the gangdrinks on the beach at the coral coast
the surrounding islands.
That night we went out for dinner to an Indian restaurant and for $6 each had full stomachs.
Then next day we went to see the semi-final between the Sharks and the Raiders which was won be the local Raiders team. I then departed and made my way to Sigatoka where I stayed at Tubakula, on the beach of the Coral Coast. Here I met other backpackers who I spent the next 2 night with. We went to a bar on the beach for dinner and a few drinks then moved on to the frog races which were being held at the resort next to us. We met 2 young couples who were on their honeymoon and each paying over $500 per night…
Highlights of Sigatoka were the fantastic weather, night time antics, roti and samosas at the market and snorkeling in the warm water filled with colourful fish.
