Woke up at 2:00 am and took Sonata. Got up at 5:45 am and sat on the beach taking photos until 7:00 am. We talked to Vince and Dee at breakfast. They are going to Nadi to shop then want to meet this afternoon to go with one of the workers at the resort to her native village. We repack and realize we have brought way too much stuff so decide that we will send back a suitcase of things when we get to Auckland. We meet Vince, Dee and our guide around 2:00 pm and walk down the beach to Viseisei Village, her native Fiji village. Most Fijians were converted to Christianity by missionaries in the 1800’s and there is a large Methodist church in the center of her village. The chief of her village ... read more

Woke up at 2:30 am. Took some Sonata and slept until 5:30 am. Starting to adjust. We met a Kiwi named Julie that is leaving today. At breakfast she gave us her address and phone number and said if we get near her home we could stay with her. It doesn’t look like we will be close to her city. Surprisingly, Michael and I laid around on the beach until about 3:00 pm, then found out that we will not be able to take the sea cruise we had hoped to take on Friday, so we set it up for Saturday. Ate dinner at the beach restaurant and made friends with Vince and Dee from Rotorua. They both work at a car lot and want to get together when we get to Rotorua. Went home at ... read more

Woke up at 1:45 am and took a Sonata. Managed to sleep until about 4:00 am. Went out on our deck to read and watch the sun come up over the beach. There is a narrow-gauge railroad the runs near the beach with flatbed cars that haul sugar cane, just harvested, to the processing plant. We are here during the harvest and you can see fires night and day where they are burning off the sugar cane fields after harvest. Went to Nadi (Nan-dy) about 10:00 am. We met a nice New Zealand couple on the ride into town. Christina works for a vineyard in Martinborough and gave us some good NZ wine information. If we get to Martinborough we will go by to see her. Nadi really doesn’t have much going on except for a ... read more

Woke up on plane about 2:00 am Fiji time. Crossed international date line enroute, so Monday was totally missed. Landed in Fiji around 5:00 am. Lines through immigration and customs were long and slow, but no problems getting through. Driver was waiting to take us to Anchorage Beach Resort. Resort is remote, but very nice. We are staying in a beach bure (bu-ray) that is new, with comfortable lounge chairs and our own Jacuzzi on the deck outside. It has floor to ceiling wooden shutters to the outside and some kind of air conditioning unit. There is a beautiful Infinity pool at the beach area and when you are in it you can’t tell where the pool stops and the ocean begins. Some new bures are under construction and it is interesting to watch their primitive ... read more

Was sick with 24-hour virus on Thursday, so stayed up late last night still packing things to take to storage unit. Woke up at 4:00 am worrying about so much to do, so I got up and finished packing. Michael and I took two carloads to storage and it is FULL, but everything fit. Michael took one carload to Salvation Army while I was getting ready to leave. We went to Michael’s parents and after a trip to Best Buy for a new external modem, got computer working, but didn’t have much time to teach Michael’s mom how to use it. Took Michael’s car to Loren’s house. Loren and Nicole took us to the airport. We had a few hours layover at LAX, so had time to have a nice dinner before leaving for Fiji. Pacific ... read more

Hi All, This is our first entry, so apologies if it does not work as we want it to. We have just arrived in Auckland and it has hardly stopped raining and there is a severe snow warning. So we are sort of wondering why we left Fiji! I am sure that will become apparent as we start to travel around, but Fiji has given it a lot to live up to. Anyway, Fiji was, if you had not already guessed, incredible. It totally took our breath away! The weather was amazing, but that was a tiny part of our wonderful experience. We joined the Feejee Experience bus on Tuesday morning and set off around the island on a trip that would last four days and three nights. To cut a long story short we went ... read more

We're up early again...6.30am...woken by the waves crashing on the beach. After breakfast we decide to go on the organised trip to the village...but time for some snorkelling first. Its best to access the reef at high tide although it is possible at all times. There are quite a lot of fish and some nice coral. The best area is either side of the crescent shaped bay. As I'm getting out I feel a sharp wrap on my wrist...it seems one of the fish took a liking to my shiny watch.....wont be wearing that again. So later its off to the village. Theres no charge for the trip, but we decide to take a few dollars to spend at the village craft market. The walk to the village is up a fairly steep hill, but we ... read more

We make a few calls (well Sarah does) straight after "breakfast". We manage to find accom at Octopus Resort...its about half an hour away on the YF and was one of our original target resorts. There's a downside, or so we thought. The only accom available is a tent. We can have it for 3 nights. We need to get away from Kuata so we go for it. It would be a decision we would not regret. First impressions of Octopus are good. A large crescent shaped beach. We are met in the traditional Fijian way...a song and big warm smiles all round......we're already starting to like it. We are led from the boat to a brief welcome meeting headed up by Jim....welcome drinks all round. Its hard to wipe the smiles from our faces. We ... read more

After dinner, we are asked if we want to go and see the Kiwi / Wallaby game. Its the tri-nation decider and is being shown on a neighbouring island. 12 of us make the trip, across open water, in the pitch black. Only the stars...and there are plenty guide the way. We set off into the black yonder, I get the impression that we are starring in the opening credits of a disaster movie! We make it of course...watch the game...and make it back. As we are walking back to our Bure one of the staff asks us "if we'd like a Bob Marley cigarette"...we of course decline...but its the final straw as far as Sarah is concerned. We'll try and escape tomorrow! ... read more

We're leaving Bounty Island today. We havent been able to get into any of our other "chosen" resorts of Otto and Fanny's, Octopus or Oarsmans Bay. They're all full. Instead we head for Kuata Resort...the gateway to the Yasawa's. Its not really covered in the guide books but we have seen their own brochure. We get the transfer boat to the YF and we are soon on our way. Travelling with us is is Hobarts answer to John Cleese (see pic and you'll see what I mean..) The cost is FJ$ 65 each (about 20 quid). We arrive bang on time (as usual) at 11am. It looks like a good choice.....but as Sarah know's appearances can be deceptive. We are checked into Bure Nr 8. Its costing us FJ$ 130 a night for the Bure and ... read more
