At 7am we are collected from our hostel and taken to meet the bus that will be our travelling home for the next 7 days. Our guide / driver is called Steve and seems OK. There are 16 people in total on the tour, a Swedish couple (the wife only speaks english) a canadian couple, 2 single female travellers (Kim and Suzi) who seem quite cool, a Japaneze father and son, the dad can only just speak english but does ramble on a bit, the son is only 16 and is so embarassed but its nice as he hasn't seen his dad for a year as the son is resident in Perth so gave up Schoolies week with his friends to come here with his dad - how sweet! There is also a german single traveller ... read more

Brochure Text: • Dolphins • Coastal Gorges • Stromatolites • Coral Bay We have the morning to spend at Monkey Mia to see the wild dolphins that come in shore which is a truly unforgettable experience. There is also an opportunity to take an optional cruise on a catamaran, ‘Aristocat2’ 'Shotover’ to see more marine life, maybe a Dugong (the legendary Mermaid Myth), as this is the best place in the world to see these magical creatures. Sea snakes, turtles and tiger sharks may also be seen. We will have lunch at the resort, before moving on to one of the many coastal cliffs , where we admire breathtaking views of Shark Bay. See more marine life swimming down below, maybe a Sting Ray or a shark or two. Then it’s back south to Riverside Sanctuary ... read more

Kalbarri As we began to approach Kalbarri we finally began to see the scenery change from red dust and dry sparse plants to more and more green fields, trees and the famous wildflowers that people come thousands of miles to see every spring. Kalbarri, a small seaside resort set in a national park sounded nice in the guide books and was even nicer in real life. It was a lovely sunny day and after the obligatory visit to the visitor information we decided to book ourselves into a caravan park for a couple of nights and booked ourselves on a 4 hour canoeing trip the next morning, starting up in the hills of the national park and finishing in Kalbarri’s beach, also including a full English breakfast! The caravan park we stayed at was great, ... read more

Thursday 27 September 2007 Happy Birthday to Amy and Meeshell!!!! Well how time is flying by, we are currently at Kalbarri which is approximately 9 hours North of Perth and it’s freezing!!!!!!!!! Well not really but it’s a lot cooler than what we are used to coming from Roebourne (22 degrees I think it is today brghhh) Since our last blog, we’ve done heaps. We have been to Cape Range National Park which is near Exmouth. We stayed for two nights at Osprey Camp ground and met up with Nev and Bron for some fresh local prawns for Bron’s birthday. We finally had a shower (a proper one using our car and the shower tent which Matt and Nev kindly assembled for me - who insisted on using the tent!) and after four days it was ... read more

After arriving rather later than planed the night before, we had a good catch up with Charlie and Natalie, who we had met while we were working at the olive farm. We had left Soulhaven a few days before them and somehow managed arrive in Kalbarri later, but hey we had been having a great time. We had decided that, as we were all going to be heading in the same direction, it would be nice to travel together for a little while. So Kalbarri was our meeting place. There was a lot to do and see in Kalbarri, the only problem being the weather. Our first day together was set to be a rainy one. So rather than waste the day we popped along to the tourist information centre to find a rainy day activity. ... read more

Turning off the Brand highway at Northampton, the road sweeps over rolling farm hills of crops and livestock. Quite unlike the flat landscape until that point. After a few days on the Brand Highway (the coastal highway between Perth and Broome) we realised that the driving experience was not going to be a scenic one like the Great Ocean Road between Melbourne and Adelaide. In fact, most of the time the road is a half an hours drive from the actual coast, so the views normally entail long, straight stretches with bush or farmfields on each side. As well as the chance of a kangaroo hopping out into your path, the even more seriously damaging chance of whacking a cow is a distinct possibility if you travel when visibility is low. So even though these huge ... read more
