Sharrocks Is On The Loose

Well, after years of dreaming about travelling and exploring the world I\'m finally going ahead and doing it! It all starts on the 20th November, 2007 when me and lady Di begin our journey around the world. Watch this space for tales of how the Wiganer (that\'s me) and the Manc lass (that\'s Di!) got on when we were unleashed into the world!

The flight seemed to go pretty smooth until 1 hour before landing the captain tells us that they are having some severe gales in England and that some planes this morning have been re-directed to Amsterdam - oh no! The captain then tells us that we have to circle a while to wait for permisson from ground countrol to land and it may be quite bumpy, but fortunatley we only have to wait 20 minutes extra and the landing is no where near as bad as they were making out - I had scenes from 'Lost' going round in my head and everything! We land, get transported over from Terminal 4 to terminal 1 and it's only here we find that our flight to Manchester has been cancelled - along with 25 other BA flights. We ... read more

Our last day - Booo!

Published: March 20th 2008Asia » Thailand » Central Thailand » Bangkok

Oh no, our last day! We kept our room on till 6pm for a bargain price of £1.50 and then bought a ticket to use the pool at their sister hotel, New Siam I. Whilst waiting for superwomen to finish her millionth task, I dared to ask if she would let us have a picture with her - and suprised to find that I think we made her day! So many people shout at her and treat her llike rubbish that when we said we thought she was superwoman it really perked her up - the next few customers received the smile treatment from her anyway! Then it was off to the pool for a last few hours of sun, although that's pretty difficult to get in Bangkok with it's high rise buildings! At 5.30pm it ... read more

Well our plan was to get to the Jatujak market for 9am when it opened and would be cooler, but feeling absolutley wrecked (am gonna need another holiday to get over this one!) we only managed to get there at 11am. The whole place is madness - stalls everywhere, you go down one alley and it opens up onto a complete new one! You need a map to navigate around it as they sell everything here, from clothes to jewellery to pets! And the later in the day it got, the more stalls came out and the more people arrived - crazy! We were ready to barter but here as the prices are so low there is no need for it - they are all in competition so put them as low as they can go ... read more

Got collected at 6am in a minibus (not the comfiest but hey ho) and our first stop was at the Damnoensaduak floating market. When we arrived we were taken on a free 15 minutes long tail boat ride around the canal way - very fun but quite scary as I was convinced that the boat was going to topple over into the river - not the stablest of things or the cleaniest of water to match! Although we survived it we did get splashed a bit, I was more worried about my new tatoo getting wet and being infected! After the fun ride you got the choice of either paying for a boat to take you around the proper floating market, see a snake show or just wander. Being proper budget backpackers we took the option ... read more

Back to good old Kho San

Published: March 20th 2008Asia » Thailand » Central Thailand » Bangkok

Well, we thought we would have to sit around in reception for 3 hours as wasn't expecting our room to be ready until at least 9am. However when superwoman came on shift at 7am (she really is great, does about 5 things at once whilst checking people in and wears the funkiest yellow and blue eye make up ever!) she gave us our room at 7.30am - great! We hit the sack and woke at 11am feeling like we had been asleep all night long - these rooms are great for £3 each! We decided to hit the shopping centres today and try and finish the pressie buying. Our first stop was at the Central Shopping centre which was very posh, bit like the ones in Manchester. But as all the prices were just a little ... read more

We wake to discover that Diane's toes that she scaped yesterday after her fight with a mosquito (loser!) are looking, well erm, not healthy to say the least! Very yellow-green with a hint of puss - lovely! Our boat to Krabi is booked for 2pm (yep, another lovely alnighter in store for us) so we hit the chemist for Diane some antibiotics and anti-septic so she can keep her toes, have some breakie, I phone ahead and book us into the New Sian II in Bangkok (don't think they're used to making reservations) then it's time for the boat. A short stop in Krabi whilst we wait for our VIP coach, then I wait to load the bags whilst Di grabs some good seats - we've got all the tricks now! She does us proud and ... read more

Got collected (well, walked through the streets by a guide collecting people on his way - a people bus!) at 8.15am which was pretty early by our now lazy standards, but would have been a lie in at one point! Managed to secure a space on the top deck of the boat, then it was off to our first stop - Maya Beach on Phi Phi Lai. For those not in the know, Phi Phi has 2 islands - Phi Phi Don where everybody stays and Phi Phi lai which has no accommodation, due to it mainly being rocks. Maya beach is where they actually filmed 'The Beach' and you can see why, once you have managed to look past the numerous tourist boats and people that are there it is gorgeous. The sea really is ... read more

Found a really nice little cafe that did a 3 course breakie for 55 baht - what a bargain! - then headed to the beach for our last full day of tannning. The guys came and found us to say goodbye which was really nice, we all swapped email numbers and I promise to send Larry some Wigan things as I have managed to turn him into a Wigan Atheletic Fan - recruiting all over the world now! Once the sun started to go down we decided to take a walk upto the Viewpoint of the Island - not realising their were about 150 quite steep steps all the way to the top! But the view was certainly worth it as you could see both sides of the island and also over to Phi Phi Lai ... read more

Yep, we were right about the shoulders - think I have worked muscles I didn't even know I had! Somehow the island has made us fall in love with it, with it's funky little streets, hearing 'beep beep' from the Thai locals who haven't got bells on their bikes, the genius of trying to disguise the islands Waste Water plant by hiding it under flower beds trying to make it look pretty and even adding a volley ball court (which suprisingly is always free) - even the bad eggy smells and island debris seem to add to its character after a while! Therefore we decide to stay until Wednesday and manage to get a discount off our guesthouse - result! (it was like doing a shady deal, I had to shake hands that I wouldn't tell ... read more

Kayaking Fun!

Published: March 19th 2008Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Phi Phi Don

Even though we wake at 9am after a lat night out and are only meeting the boys at 1pm, we end up faffing in the room and only leave at 11.30am. We thought we would still have plenty of time, but after ordering a take-away sandwich that takes almost an hour to come (we discover that they have actually run out of bread and had to send some guy on his bike to get some) then stopping for some water we barely just make it in time. The boys have done us proud (and to shame) though, as not only habe they sorted out the kayaks, snorkels and fishing reels, they have also brought snadwiches and a bucket of beer! The guys spilt up with me and diane so we don't have to paddle as hard ... read more
