Distance traveled 1260km/4300km(29%).Stayed 6 nights. On 21st May(day 18),a short 150km journey to Exmouth which is located on the same peninsula which juts out off the mainland as Coral Bay.On one side is Exmouth Bay and on the other the northern tip of Ningaloo Reef in the Indian Ocean.Exmouth was almost destroyed by a cyclone in March 1999 but has more than recovered with a brand new marina development under construction likely to change the character of the sleepy little town for ever. The other landmark here is a joint US/Australian communication center which has at it’s apex huge masts thrusting into the sky.Apparently the Sept 11th attacks in the USA caused a shutdown of tourism here for a while. The Cape Range National Park is located on the seaward side of the peninsula and remarkably has a ... read more

Distance traveled 1132km/4300km(26%).Stayed 3 nights.18th May and after a quick “decamp” which for us is a fraction of the time taken by the caravanners to pack and hitch up,we did a quick restock in Carnarvon because the camper fraternity freely pass on these important tips….buy food etc., before Coral Bay as it is expensive there.Included in our shopping foray was a 1kg pack of tiger prawns from the local seafood wholesaler…a snip at $24(R150).The drive north to Coral Bay is relatively short(300kms)and we are soon trundling up the North West Coastal highway. Now…time in the campervan on the road presents real quality observation and reflection time……from an observation aspect our birding efforts continue and we have chalked up a good list including an osprey seen at the Gascoyne estuary in Carnarvon.Australia has something in the region of ... read more

We have been to Adelaide several times and always enjoy exploring this beautiful city. The port is large and located a fair distance from the city. The main exports of South Australia are the 3 Ws—wheat, wool and wine. This trip we went with Mary and Suzanne in their private van to the Adelaide Hills to visit the Cleland Wildlife Park where we saw kangaroos, dingo dogs, koala bears and Tasmanian devils. I think the koala bears were designed by Disney as they are so cute and cuddly you can hardly stand it. We saw mama kangaroos with their little joeys peeking out from mom’s convenient pouch. We happened upon a park attendant who was carrying around a huge snake of the constrictor family. I didn’t hang around long enough to find out the snake’s lineage ... read more

Hi Everyone! It's officially to hot to be outside and I am seeking refuge in an internet cafe. I'm in Exmouth which if you haven't heard of it before, I don't blame you. It's tiny and in the middle of nowhere, but beautiful. But how about I tell you how I got here first. So I spent about a week in Perth which honestly was a perfect amount of time. I did two amazing dives off Rottnest island which were great. The water is temperate (so wetsuits were essential!) but a tropical current comes down the coast which makes for interesting coral and some good sea life as well. King's park was a great way to spend the day and I did a walking tour with a naturalist who pointed out all the amazing flora that ... read more

Its funny how your perception of something is forced to change when you have to accept the cruel fate bestowed upon you by the campervan Gods. Exmouth was like many a town we had passed through on the West Coast of Australia during our journey North from Perth without a second glance - but this time we could not pass through, well not quickly anyway. Our van had died a sorry death 110km south of Exmouth, and the place where it left the back of the RAC truck, Site 27 at the Ningaloo Caravan Park, was the place it would remain for the next 2 months and where we too would live. We were now forced to like the place, because after all we didn't have a choice. Like it or kill yourself, 'cos you sure ... read more

Well I thought it it was about time to add another blog. Exmouth has been wicked to us, its a great place so chilled out we don't want to leave. It seems to be that type of place that sucks people in, you talk to people who are like "we were only meant to be here for 3days and that was 3 years ago!" and we know what they mean. We've made a good crew of friends and always heading to the beach for a surf, walk on the sand, or to mess with the hermit crabs as I like to amuse myself doing! John from my work took me and my friend Natalia out snorkeling to the mildura wreck and we saw some amazing things. Sea snakes, turtles, blue starfish, a dugong (google it!) who ... read more

So, since we've been stranded up here it was time to get our serious heads on and find work. Most places we went into were very reluctant to giving backpackers jobs as they usually leave within a week so it didn't look good at first. But, as of now (Monday) we are both employed, yey! We're working for the Pot Shot Hotel Resort, Robs is working in the bottle shop (the off licence) and I'm working in Graces Tavern serving food and drinks, and also doing some housekeeping in the resort itself. It's not perfect but it brings in the money. So, in the mean time there won't be too many blogs until we can move on as all I'd have to report is work, work and more work. With perhaps a bit of snorkeling, cycling ... read more

Alrighty, putting yesterday’s complete disaster behind us we prayed for a better day swimming with the whale sharks, wooooo! It was worth every dollar we paid! First we had a practice snorkel in the open water and I saw a turtle and a manta ray. Then after a few false alarms, some unplayful whale sharks, lots of waiting around, and me having a bit of sea sickness (my first) we saw WHALESHARKS!!!!! Three of them in fact, two smaller ones around 3-4m then one around 7.5m and these are baby ones! After an exciting morning and noon, it was time to eat, mmmmm, and to warm up, the winds made it bloody freezing on the boat! Then it was time to go Humpback whale spotting and we saw loads! A few breached for us, we saw ... read more

Well they say bad luck happens in 3's, and that saying proved right for us as Harry is dead. The day started off great; we got to Coral Bay nice and early and went out snorkeling on the Ningaloo Reef. We saw some amazing fish and a couple stingrays. You didn't even need to snorkel to see some, by the beach standing knee deep massive snappers swim around in groups of about 10. Literally swimming round you and having a good old look at you. We had our lunch on the beach and then decided to get to Exmouth reasonably early to get a good camp spot and find our bearings. Then, disaster struck.....110km south of Exmouth and Harry starts smoking and then just dies. I managed to flog down THE Telstra phone engineer for the ... read more
