Heading south - more heat, more flies, but still wonderful!
Published: November 23rd 2011Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » Exmouth » the cityI feel more and more reluctant to update my blog, perhaps because we are nearing the end of our wonderful adventure, and while I am looking forward to returning to ‘normalcy’ and home, another part of me doesn’t want to stop this amazing - though at times exhausting - trip. Particularly now as we have hit the coast, and are finally spending lots of time at the beach. We are currently in Exmouth, right by Ningaloo Reef, a fantastic fringing reef easily accessible from the beach, which is great for the boys (and the budget). And not only is the snorkelling amazing, but the beaches are white with lots of shells to keep the younger boys entertained, and the water is clear and beautifully turquoise. I am in Heaven! But first, what ... read more
Exmouth is a town on the tip of the North West Cape in Western Australia. The town is located 1,270 kilometres (789 mi) north of the state capital Perth and 3,366 kilometres (2,092 mi) southwest of Darwin. The town was established in 1964 to support the nearby United States Naval Communication Station Harold E. Holt. Beginning in the late 1970s, the town began hosting U.S. Air Force personnel assigned to Learmonth Solar Observatory, a defence science facility jointly operated with Australia's Ionospheric Prediction Service.... read more
This is a beautiful place particularly in the Ningaloo Nat Park. We had to line up at the gate early to get in, but ended up at Ned's Camp. Everyone is really friendly and out for fun. We snorkled at Turquoise and Oyster Stacks. These were awesome. The fish were so colorful and so close. One lady saw a shark which I am glad I missed. We did a trip up the Yardie Creek gorge and checked out all the beaches. Have left and heading towards Coral Bay.... read more
Sleeping next to ocean was awesome. The sunrise this morning was stunning. It is actually now 8:20am and we are sitting around relaxing and watching the tide return. Yesterday when we got here we were treated to a show with huge whales breaching on the horizon. Then 10 pelicans drifted past looking for a feed of fish. Today is a little overcast at the moment but often warms up as the day goes on. It has been great to read all the comments, so keep them coming. Am guessing we will have more phone coverage now so might be a bit more regular with our entries. Happy birthday brother Pete. Have a great day.... read more

When someone says ‘What do you think of when I say “Exmouth”? my reply is simple….Pristine Beaches and Picture Perfect. Located 1270kms from Perth, WA, with an overnight stop in Kalbarri, the drive and wait is truly paid off as soon as you hit the beaches of Exmouth. After returning from Exmouth back in April….I was sad to be leaving but also relaxed and in awe of where I had just been. With the sun on my back and the smell of the oceanit was fabulous, I honestly didn’t want to come home. We rented a house in the town centre, which was close to the shops and resturants and was perfect for 2 families of 4 plus more. I would also highly recommend staying at the Lighthouse Caravan Park which was absolutely devine…perfect for the ... read more
Alice Springs - Darwin - Exmouth (WA)
Published: July 1st 2009Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » Exmouth » the cityWe spent a week in Alice Springs. Not so much because of its charms but because we were looking for work. We were staying on a crap campsite. No camp kitchen - not even a fridge. The upside was that there were these Rock Wallabies which would descend from the rock outcrop at the edge of the site every dusk to get fed and generally bicker amongst themselves. They were very cute, tiny little furry things. Although Alice seemed like a haven in the desert at first, we soon tired of it. It’s not a pretty place and there are lots of dodgy looking vagrant types wandering around. We didn’t really do anything in Alice besides watch Prison Break on our laptop (rented from the DVD store). It’s quite addictive. We met up with a girl ... read more

Published: May 26th 2009Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » Exmouth » the cityDistance traveled 1260km/4300km(29%).Stayed 6 nights. On 21st May(day 18),a short 150km journey to Exmouth which is located on the same peninsula which juts out off the mainland as Coral Bay.On one side is Exmouth Bay and on the other the northern tip of Ningaloo Reef in the Indian Ocean.Exmouth was almost destroyed by a cyclone in March 1999 but has more than recovered with a brand new marina development under construction likely to change the character of the sleepy little town for ever. The other landmark here is a joint US/Australian communication center which has at it’s apex huge masts thrusting into the sky.Apparently the Sept 11th attacks in the USA caused a shutdown of tourism here for a while. The Cape Range National Park is located on the seaward side of the peninsula and remarkably has a ... read more
