I warn you, I just wrote 400 words and then managed to loose it, so the next 400 words will probably have a bored brain dead undertone. Firstly, It seems only right I start our Western Australian adventure with the long journey to it. We decided to stay on the Gold Coast longer instead of moving on to Sydney as planned as we're going to Sydney later anyway. So we had an annoyingly long journey from Surfers Paradise to Sydney. 17 hours. On a bus. I think I can leave it to your imaginations to wonder what a delight that was. It left at 8 in the morning and got to Sydney at 1 the next morning. Our flight to Perth left at 8 that morning. It seemed like a brilliant idea. We would have to ... read more

After Geraldton, we arrived at our last coastal camp at Cervantes on 6 October about 250km north of Perth. Its claim to fame is the “Pinnacles” a series of sandstone “obelisks” a little bit inland. Despite the research, there is no agreed theory on how they were formed. You can drive through them and the area is quite extensive and very unusual. Next stop was New Norcia, only 120km north of Perth, which is an old Benedictine town, with an abbey for monks and nuns, and several chapels. It was founded in 1839 by the Spanish; hence it is named after the birthplace of St Benedict. It used to have 4 schools segregated into boys and girls, black and white. The schools closed about 20 years ago and it now survives on conferences and tourists. In ... read more

Firstly, just a note about our blogs. We’re not entirely happy with the new format that has been imposed upon us but we can’t do anything about that. Apologies if you’ve got used to the old layout, as we had, but we hope you can adapt to the new one. We’ve noticed that it’s easy to overlook some of the photos, particularly if they spread into a second page. They don’t always but, if they do, you have to scan down the screen to the very bottom of the official “bumph” attached to the blog and they will appear when the cursor passes over them. Thanks for reading and good luck! Tuesday 10th – when we finally dragged ourselves out of bed, another perfect clear blue sky greeted us. We did think we might go off ... read more

Sunday 8th – The day dawned bright and sunny and we were up and about at 7:30am. Preparing to go away and leaving the caravan behind was not as easy as it might seem. It was difficult enough deciding what clothing we might need. But the real difficulty was deciding what other items that we are used to having at our fingertips we would definitely need in Bunbury. Also, we were not just leaving Sweetie where she was – she would be moved into a storage area – so everything had to be packed away as if we were moving on lock, stock and barrel. Most time was spent on emptying the fridge and packing all the foodstuffs we would use into suitable containers for transportation. A large plastic box took most of the dry goods ... read more

A busy week - Saturday we went for tea with our Aussie friends Keith and Lorraine. They live very close to the Swan River. Keith is a keen "paddler" and offered to lend us a Kayak. However, Bull Sharks have been seen in the river (this week) due to the hot weather so we declined! They introduced us to another couple of house swappers from Vancouver, Keith and Robyn. They are staying up in the hills where there have been quite a lot of fires so they had decided to go south for a while to escape the heat. On Sunday we headed south to the Margaret River area (350K) from Perth. What we didn't know was that once a year they close the freeway for a charity cycle ride. It was Sunday and we had ... read more

20th December 2010 Hi all - Long time no entry! (as the actress said to the bishop) Well we enjoyed our stay on the Gold Coast. Thanks again to all our friends for making us feel so welcome. We have just spent another week back in Perth where we managed to catch up with some friends, Nelson and Shirley, before we left. We had originally met them back in 2006 on our NZ trip and had missed them a couple of times over the years when they had passed through the Gold Coast on their travels. We had a lovely afternoon with them. We also made a quick visit to Cottesloe Beach, but it was incredibly windy, so it was a very short stay. One thing we have noticed since arriving in the south west, is ... read more

For those of you who read our last blog, (all zero of you, many thanks) you will, we hope, have noticed that they are getting shorter and shorter. This was not a conscious decision on our part, it just happened, so live with it. Anyway, it gives you more time to admire our great photography. The caravan park at Rockingham was not the best in the world, but the showers were hot and that’s good enough for us. From here we visited (by bus) Fremantle, which is a great place. The Fremantle Gaol is well worth a visit. There are several different tours, we did the “Doing Time” tour and thoroughly enjoyed it. This was followed by a stroll through the Fremantle Markets to the very busy cappuccino mall, and then on to the jetty with ... read more

18th October - Off to Bunbury this morning after 'school' - boys do their journals each day, spellodrome and maths. They also have to answer some knowledge questions. They are a little annoyed about these however, they get to the work quite happily. Hope to see more dolphins today and try our hand at some more fishing .... read more

After losing a few more fillings, we were off on the sealed road to Yallingup - a mecca for surfer-type dudes who know it as Yals. The whole area is renowned for its powerful reef breaks, and I’m quoting directly when I say that the surf here is described by surfing supremo Nat Young as ‘epic’ and World Surfing Champ Mark Richards as ‘one of the world’s finest’. We went down to take some pictures for Paul, but sorry son, surf was definitely not up, so it was a little disappointing ... but we did think of you!! Our local map gives the names of all the surfing beaches - I wasn’t particularly taken with the ones called Gallows and Guillotine - didn’t quite like the sound of them - or the roadsigns warning how dangerous ... read more

Hi all We arrived back in Perth on Saturday afternoon after a good flight. Our van and car were waiting for us in Steve and Louise's paddock, very well cared for. Thanks guys! They even washed the dust off, and had our fridge on with milk, bread, marg , cheese, etc in it. Louise's father met us and let us in the security gate, as they were off with their hotrods for the day. It was very warm, but our airconditioner soon had the temperature of the van down. After spending Sunday with them, we headed off on Monday, back to Forrestfield in Perth for 2 nights. We picked up our camera (bought in Darwin) which had been fixed under warrantee, and did some stocking up with supplies. Tuesday , we were picked up at the ... read more
