Sitting here in our second week in Coolangatta, Dubbo seems so long ago…what happened to the past 10 months? The only way to get rid of this terrible feeling is to do it all again, but permanently! At least we have our jaunt to UK and USA to look forward to! Anyway, back to Dubbo, and the zoo in particular. What a great zoo, called The Western Plains and this is because all the animals are found in the western plains of Africa. You can walk round (but it is a long way, over 6km), cycle round on your own, or hired bike, hire a six seater buggy or, as we did, drive your own car. The entrance fee, which at first seems expensive, allows you to go round as many times as you like over ... read more

What a great stroke of luck deciding to stay at Berri and not Renmark. Although it was rather busy with families who slept in tents because any money they might have had had been spent on the ski boat and all the floating accessories you could think of. But we awake the next day to see a great number packing up and heading home, and so they should, us grey nomads need a bit of peace and quiet! Our short stay here saw us visit Renmark (and quickly leave again), climb the local water tower for views of the Murray River, visit a Historical Village at Loxton, and back track about 40km because we happened to pass Banrock Station Winery on the outskirts of Berri. We know you will find this hard to believe but ... read more

The Big Red Full Bodied Barossa Are you sitting comfortably? Then we’ll begin…….. Arriving at our caravan park in Nuriootpa on 23 December we set up camp and off we go to stock up for the long weekend and see what’s going down over the holidays..not much by all accounts! Anyway, undeterred we thought that 2 days before xmas would be a great time for some wine tastings so off we popped. Out first port of call was Chateau Tanunda, great place, great reds, unlike Saltrams, our second stop. Sorry for the short delay, we had to consult the diary to jog the memory for the rest of the week. Please do not judge us as it becomes a winery crawl. OK, Xmas Eve. Going to be a big evening (it’s our 10th Anniversary) so the ... read more

We have decided to make this a short blog even though we did spend 10 days here. Ok, let’s start. Two days were spent in Adelaide itself, one for shopping (the Myer Centre on Rundle mall is a copy of the Myer Centre on Queen St Mall in Brisbane, or vice versa) and one for sightseeing. We walked along the River Torrens past the zoo and into the Botanical Gardens before making our way back along the river to the Adelaide Oval (the place it all started to fall apart for the Aussies) and a tour of the Don Bradman museum. Joke what do you get if you cross an Australian cricketer with an oxo cube? Answer A Laughing Stock Another day was spent driving up to the Adelaide Hills visiting the wooden toy factory at ... read more

Now where did we leave you in Blog 30? Ah yes, we were just settling down with Ron & Shirley for a game of Qwirkle. It was still light but the sky looked ominous. The game was intriguing, so much so that we hadn’t noticed the inky black clouds that had now moved overhead and the out of the black came the lightening with the crack of thunder on it’s heels. Shirley suggested may be a good time to pack up, but some silly sod said ‘no, let’s wait to see if it rains’ and these words were answered with a gust of wind that cleared the table of Qwirkle, drinks and nibbles, as we were simultaneously lashed with rain. Debby and the silly sod then spent 20 minutes wrestling and clinging on to the awning ... read more

After getting out of Ceduna as quick as we could we spent a couple of days in Streaky Bay where we realised, on seeing all the festive lights and displays at the caravan park….hey, it’s nearly Christmas!!!!!! Time to get into the spirit and as it was Friday a G&T and V&T and the odd sip of port went down well!!!!!! After a slow start the following day we took the tourist drive to Cape Bauer and Westall Way to visit the blow holes (that didn’t blow) the whistling holes, (yes they did whistle) and Murphy’s Haystacks, being rock formations that look like, yes you’ve guessed it, Murphy, no, haystacks! A short long hop gets us into Port Lincoln. The most southerly tip of the peninsula. We had planned 3 days at the most, but ended ... read more

Well, lots of things have been written about the Nullarbor and all of them undoubtedly true to the eye of the writer, but sit back, read and enjoy our journey as we travel from Esperance to Ceduna, this long, flat, boring straight, eventful, dull, uninteresting road. To build up our nerve we stopped at Esperance for 3 days in a park nestled next to the train line and the road train highway, bringing grain to the port at all hours of the day and night. Now we don’t think Esperance is famous for anything special, but we did hear tell the story of Sammy the sea lion. So with little else to amuse us we went for a look see. Now we have to say that having walked the jetty and seen the small bronze statue ... read more

Bye bye Margaret River and hello Pemberton, home of the karri tree. This hardwood tree dominates the area and is the sole reason for the survival of this quaint town, oh and perhaps a tourist or two. Things to do in Pemberton; take a ride on a tram down to the Warren River (and hope you get a better day for it than we did) and drive the unmade roads through the forest (we enjoyed this, the roads were in good condition despite the recent rain and were also one way only, the complete lack of other traffic made it a breeze). From the tall karri tree we drove to Walpole, the home of the even bigger tingle tree towering over 70m into the sky. Now we must warn you, if you want to do the ... read more

We do not wish you to think that the last seven months was just a journey to one of our two favourite places in Australia but here we are in Margaret River, the home of some great wines. No silly discussions about how long we shall stay here, 2 days, maybe 3? We unanimously agree, let’s start with 8 and see how it goes. Our camp site, Taunton Farm, has a cellar door (Pandrini) a five minute walk across a field and is midway between Bussleton and Augusta. As they say, in the thick of it! Our arrival date Monday 1 November, one day before the Melbourne Cup. After visiting the Pandrini winery we decide to join the Melbourne Cup lunch at the caravan park. Alas no luck at the TAB, but Debby did win a ... read more

For those of you who read our last blog, (all zero of you, many thanks) you will, we hope, have noticed that they are getting shorter and shorter. This was not a conscious decision on our part, it just happened, so live with it. Anyway, it gives you more time to admire our great photography. The caravan park at Rockingham was not the best in the world, but the showers were hot and that’s good enough for us. From here we visited (by bus) Fremantle, which is a great place. The Fremantle Gaol is well worth a visit. There are several different tours, we did the “Doing Time” tour and thoroughly enjoyed it. This was followed by a stroll through the Fremantle Markets to the very busy cappuccino mall, and then on to the jetty with ... read more
