Leahanne and I hopped into the car and headed out of Melbourne city to the seaside town of Portsea. We drove all along beach road which is right on the coast of Morington Peninsula. Amazing views the whole way down. We drove up to a place called Arthur's seat for a view down along the coast. AMAZING! We were 200 and some meters up. We continued on down to Portsea. We stopped for lunch at the Portsea pub. We sat outside overlooking the coast. Had an amazing lunch and then we stopped at a place called Sorrento beach. Beautiful beach but the waves were pretty big. We stopped in Frankston on the way back to the city to see leahanne's friends Anita and George. They have 4 young kids under the age of 6, 3 girls ... read more

Going Back to Portsea ... The Officer Cadet School was never a place that attracted me back for sentimental visits. I think that I drove down once with the family when they were quite young, and turned away at the gates without going any further. I was glad to be overseas when it closed and was absorbed into the Royal Military College, Duntroon. That, at least, let me avoid avoid going back. Even then, I couldn't avoid begging letters from past graduates flogging this history or that limited edition sketch of the old buildings. After the Officer Cadet School closed, the site was taken over by the the School of Army Health, and I visited it on several occasions in the early and mid-1990s. It had started to lose its horror, and become just another set ... read more

Chris, Jamie and I decided to pack up and go on a road trip in Chris' beat-up 1978 Volvo (with no air-conditioning!). As per usual, we didn't have any prior planning but having been stressed out by final presentations at Uni, we wanted to head farthest away from Melbourne as possible. So off to Mornington Peninsula we went, about 100kms south of Melbourne. Along the Mornington Peninsula beaches you'll find bathing boxes, which are now heritage listed. Believe it or not, these boxes cost from AUD$5000-$150,000! I kid you not. We found a caravan park in Rosebud, which was really cosy. And no, you don't have to rock up in a caravan. The place we lived in could have accommodated about 6 people, had a tv, kitchen, bath. Really comfy and not at all expensive. In ... read more
